  1. Those potato loaves look great. Bloviatrix, how did the cake taste?
  2. Im curious, what did you dinner cost last night?
  3. I just did the exchange rate. You're lunch cost 6.80 USD and your mango juice cost 2.72. What a bargain!!
  4. Ok, I caved and Im in the proccess of baking them now.( I have to make some turkey meatballs soon and I need the oven) I have one pizza stone so Im doing them one at a time. I had to sneak a taste and OMG, they are fabulous. Im not sure on the cuts though, I kinda winged it.
  5. I just love that salty/sweet combination too. When we were kids, my mom used to make us chocolate malts and give us fat bavarian pretzels to dip in. Yummy, I can still taste it. When you perfect the recipe, Id love to try it.
  6. I was at Target yesterday and I bought a fountain diet coke. I was surprised to see they had syrups. Chocolate, Cherry and rasberry to give your soda a squirt of flavor. I used the chocolate and it was yum. * going off to look for diet cherry vanilla dr. pepper*
  7. Thanks for the link. She says that ricotta isnt a high yeild cheese. Do you know how much Id get from the 2 quarts of milk?
  8. Its just an after curling party( curling is some weird Canadian sport that I dont get, but which my SO plays and loves). Im thinking of making the black forest from Piere Herme's chocolate desserts, but I do have focaccia in the fridge for tomorrow. Btw, do you know if that dough can be refridgerated for more than 36hrs? I put it in the fridge last night at 11pm. I planned on making it tomorrow for dinner.
  9. Ok, forgive my cluelessness, but how would I go about making ricotta. That sounds interesting.
  10. I love this as a dessert and of course you must have cake. *thinking its time for another fondue party*
  11. I have an ultra power that I got about 12yrs ago. I have no idea what the wattage is, but it has held up very well for me. I made some foccacia dough tonight and it had to knead for 10 min. I did have to hold onto it because it was jumpy, but it didnt get that hot. When I shipped it here to Canada from California, it did break, but I took it to a certified KA repair place and it cost 25$ to fix it. I too was thinking of getting a bigger model, but now Im not so sure.
  12. I once read an article about the store's in the LA area called 99 cent only stores. I personally love that store, but I wont get much kitchen stuff there( aside from bamboo skewars). For instance. The reynolds foil sheets are sold in a pack of 25 for 99 cents at the most dollar stores, but the supermarket pack is 50 often for 1.99( or even less with a coupon). People just think "oh, one dollar, what a bargain". but they are not looking at the whole picture. I've used those generic baggies and I hate them, they are thin, flimsy and the seals often dont line up. I stock up when they're on sale at Target. Food is another thing. I make exceptions for baking soda and when they have name brand spices. I once picked up some lawrey's chicken seasoning that was very good. If you need a small bottle of capers that is also a good deal. I dont find their canned goods to be that great of a bargain either. The best bargain I've found is candles( BUT ONLY ONES THAT ARE MADE IN THE USA). I love candles and I burn them everyday. Dont buy any candles made in China, the quality is just terrible.
  13. That looks really yum. Was it particularly vanilla-y having used 2 beans? I'm happy to cook more stuff from BWJ. [edited to remove pic to save space] ← Hi, Yes, it was filled with vanilla flavor. I bought the beans at www.saffron.com and since they were so cheap, I figured Id use two( also, they were kind of puny). My SO loved the cake, it was really lovely. I was going to make some ice cream to go with it, but we just decided to enjoy the cake's simplicity. We have a party to attend next weekend so I'd like to bake something for that. Any recommendations? I'd be up for doing some bread during the week too. I'm off to California next week so I can do anything after that for 2 weeks. btw, Im really enjoying your blog this week. Love the pictures.
  14. [Moderator note: The original "Baking With Julia" by Julia Child topic became too large for our servers to handle efficiently, so we've divided it up; the preceding part of this discussion is here: "Baking With Julia" by Julia Child (2004)] I'm hoping to revive this thread, having just picked up a copy of BWJ on ebay. Today I baked the vanilla pound cake using 2 thatian vanilla beans and baking in a bundt pan. anyone want to bake something else?
  15. I bought a case of la valle( non dop) for 19.00 at Todarobros.com. I did a mail order because Im not in NY. The price has since gone up since I got them a few weeks ago. I havent used them yet, but I do plan on making some sauce. For domestic tomatoes, I prefer Muir glen.
  16. Im curious, how much did the crab cost? I paid 8.99 for a 1lb can of pasturized lump crabmeat.
  17. My SO hates fruit. How can someone hate fruit? I dont get it. She also douses her french fries with salt. Oy, I feel a heart attack coming on just thinking about it.
  18. Miracle whip will NEVER cross my lips. Oh gosh, its vile. I like Hellman's and lately trader joes mayo is really good. No preservatives.
  19. check here for vanilla beans. great prices, shipping included. There is a thread regarding this company at pastry and baking.
  20. Ling, they are in Canada, just not in Western Canada. We have them here in Ontario.
  21. They are big deal here too. I never even heard of them until I moved here. I went to MI today and the supermarket bakery cases were loaded down with them. I find no discernible difference between that and a donut.
  22. Thanks!! I was using Junior's recipe, but it used a lot of cream cheese and I didnt want to use that much. Ill try this recipe.
  23. I've never heard of Rucola, what is that? Is it similar to arugala? I'm totally enjoying this. I want to hop a plane to Amsterdam now.
  24. Mark's on las olas is fantastic too. Pricey though, but one of the best meals I've ever eaten.
  25. anyone have a good blintze recipe?
