PMS: Tell it Like It Is. Your cravings, Babe (Part 1)
Kapuliperson replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Right now it's not food I'm craving, but the voice and happiness of a friend of mine :'( -
We've got chayote - i'd cook it with a little tofu and tomatoes in coconut milk. Yummy stuff. I've also got potatoes, garlic, beets, leeks, NZ spinach, and some green beans out there.

What I found out later was that they get the monkeys drunk and when they pass out the chef slices through the skull basically using a bone saw. You then just lift the top off and there you go... To be honest it's not something I'm in a hurry to do or try again!!!
-
Good idea. I'll do that.
-
Looks fantastic, I'm getting hungrier. The "pillow bread" looks really good as well. It's interesting how foods from different cultures can be mixed and can come out great - I've had some Indian versions of pizza as well - all good stuff. Bitter-gourd pizza is quite good... although I've never seen it made anywhere other than my own kitchen :p
-
try it again with more kneading.
-
never had it before, sounds good though!

I LOVE mooncakes! I always make it a point to go visit my Chinese friends and teachers when it's around the mid-autumn festival. While the ice cream ones are good, the best ones I've had were the ones filled with sweetened, mashed beans
-
I'm not caucasian and am not married but I can tell you about my favorite uncle and his best friend- they're both caucasian and they're both married to Chinese women. They both don't cook but stayed in Taiwan for quite a while- before that, they both didn't have very much experience with Chinese food. .. not to mention, they've got the cutest kids!
-
or maybe you can ask the Indians around... It's pretty cool- when I was visiting my grandmother in the Philippines I took a walk around her village and was surprised to see all the currypata trees and tulsi plants growing so wildly and beautifully in abundance right on the sidewalks.
-
Clean table cloth, plates, glasses, spoons/forks.. eh- don't ask- some people at my house still don't seem to know how to wash the dishes..

Apple struedel, apple tarts/jam, apple cinnamon rolls, apple granola bread, caramel apple, dehydrated apple with maple or caramel or just plain, apple chips

yumm.. I've had them before but haven't got the recipe.. sorry about that -
your boy will have an incredibly easy time. If he wants- he can just go to the Buddhist temple and eat there for free at meal times. Otherwise, usually when you enter the restaurants or if you're joining some occasion, you'll be asked at the entrance whether you are vegetarian or not and if you are, you will be ushered to the vegetarian section. I like the way they do that. Definitely try all their moon cakes, cho tofu/stinky tofu (smells disgusting, but tastes real good, trust me- and I like to smell everything before putting it into my mouth), their sweet stuff like hopia, their baos/breads.. good luck!
-
You could always just go to the Buddhist temples to eat as well.. but you won't be able to find "cho tofu" there. Actually I find that the best foods in Taiwan can be found just in the streets and not in the restaurants... but yes, I know- business trip.
-
while I am not familiar with the area and therefore will not be able to give you any good suggestions, why don't you just make your own bibimpap? It's really easy and a common dish in our household. In fact we just had it for lunch today. Just pm me if you want the instructions/recipe.
-
we had spagghetti and foccasia for dinner.

My aunt likes to fry it in butter until the beans sort of get black dots and dark green then she puts soy sauce - it's really yummy! I like it for fried rice as well. I dice it, saute in butter/oil then add tofu/rice. I also like it as you mentioned- just blached and buttered- otherwise, blanched then eaten with a yeast sauce (nutritional yeast+olive oil+soy sauce+vinegar/lemon juice mix).
-
definitely granny smith.

Okraphobic ..what do you see in this stuff anyway?
Kapuliperson replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Try eating it raw, it's not slimy at all. I know it sounds even more disgusting, but try it. I'm not particularly fond of okra either especially when it's called 'lady fingers'. For one, whoever started calling it that must've had a wife/sister who had really disgusting looking fingers. Meh! And for another, the slime of course. But it's not as bad as boiled eggplant- with all the slime, weird texture and length which always reminds me of octopus -
Damn, what about us who don't need glasses? Or should we just borrow? :p
