  1. I make all my own preserves except for apricot: Bonne Maman is excellent for most baking tasks, and I have used it in preference to others (although Smuckers is good) for as long as I can remember. I make small batches of seedless raspberry each summer, and when that is gone, Smuckers is my choice.

    Oscars Party

well, it seems like you'd have to have chocolate cream pie for The Help. Or a whole Southern menu
  3. I have a set of inexpensive 25 glass dinner and salad/dessert plates, and small bowls. I use them perhaps once a year and people seem to appreciate having a real plate. I have cutlery for 25, too.

    Cooking for 26!

I would do a big sautee of sweet and hot Italian sausage, red and green peppers, onions, seasoned with salt, pepper, basil, and oregano, and serve it over a big plate of rice cooked in stock. The sausage is cheap and goes very, very far; you could probably get away with 4 lb. A salad and some bread, and you're good.
  5. It's just a phase...
  6. This is an adaptation of Jeni's basic recipe, with prickly pear (VERY pink) and of her praline mix-in, made with pine nuts
  7. BTW, how IS the DL Vietnamese coffee ice cream?
  8. For me, tortillas espagnol is essential at a tapas party. Make a few hours ahead, turn on a wooden board, serve with marinated roasted red pepper seasoned with smoked paprika, s, p Really good dates, stuffed with almonds or goat cheese little veal meatballs in a peppery brandy sauce some shrimp, served room temp-in romesco, or with aioli cod and chorizo fritters, some sort of tomato-based dipping sauce a piece of manchego and some rough apricot paste made by stewing CA unsulphured apricots
  9. good that it is the one in the market and not the original location or I would feel like we had to go to Lolita or El Vez first.
  10. Catbird Seat was not yet open when I moved from Nashville, but as I said above, I really liked Patterson House. It was a few blocks from Vandy, and I would often go there after teaching class on a Thursday night for a drink and a light supper. If you are still there, try Holland House, too, in E Nashville. Flyte is one of those places that reminded me of an '80s restaurant--a little too precious, trying too hard, not quite making it.
  11. I generally go to Deruta for mine
  12. It's fine.
  13. I lived in Nashville for a few years; Noshville was, if I remember correctly, very good. The Alpha Bakery appears to still be open; the brioche bread will probably kill you, but you'll die happy. I was still a kid when I left, so I'm not the most reliable judge. Is Hog Heaven still a go-to barbecue spot? No to Hog Heaven, or almost anywhere else, for bbq. Martin's the only one. Alpha Bakery, yes, are you thinking of the croissant bread? Totally decadent.
  14. This was the only wkend that worked for me, so good decision! Look forward to my first Heartland event.
  15. Same. And I use them for many non-kitchen things as well.
  16. Looks like they are 8 oz. Both are, in my opinion, too large for properly made cocktails. They are 6 oz to the rim
  17. oh, and I forgot: pure maple syrup.
  18. Lovely, Will.
  19. I think I can do those dates. By the way, where do people stay? Do we block rooms somewhere?
  20. And no gloves! What a man!
  21. I'm staying with the strictly "nonnegotiable" (no substitute) idea versus the "must have" (two different concepts). Full-fat cream, good butter, and lard for Mexican cooking. Fresh parsley, basil, cilantro.
  22. Leftovers from last night--usually, cold London Broil made into a sandwich. Today (now that I am in Tucson) mole negro, reheated in homemade tortillas.
  23. After searching all over I just purchased 8 coupes for a wedding present for a young friend from through Etsy. I was prepared to spend much more, but found these--exactly what I was looking for.
  24. Upright. Storing a good glass or crystal on its rim would damage the glasses and also tend toward breakage. I think storing them upside-down is meant to keep them from getting dusty, but so does the rest of the glass. Wipe them.
