  1. suggestions for the college student.....local grocery store with a deli counter..... provolone....great stuff......walmart or sams club....u can get some decent brie at a good price.....also gouda
  2. as cliche as it may sound...while i do have quite a collection of cookbooks....my very first cookbook and one that i still love is betty crocker..ok it may be old fashioned but then again so am i...howeveri did discover early on that even betty could be modifed to become something unique to me...which is basically what i do with a great many recipes that come from cookbooks anyway....someone i love very much once told me that a recipe is merely a suggestion..which i think is very true especially when ive modifed recipes all along...and so as it is with the recipe..let me slightly modify what i was told a recipe is merely a suggestion..u can add to or subtract from it and wind up giving it a twist..and creating something that is uniquiley your own... i do however come up with recipes that i create on my own without a preset recipe that i have played with..and if they work out..great..if not..keep trying til i get it the way it right....
  3. burnt crust on a no bake cheesecake?......seems not only cant she cook..she cant read directions either
  4. ive got three favorites....sadly that i cant have again until my fiance and i get them sugar free as we are both diabetic.... hes a wonderufl cook..wonderful baker and he makes these chocolate chip cookies as well as the white chocolate macadamia nut cookies that i just love..mrs fields move over cuz the competiotion is coming....lol the other one i like are oatmeal cookies..with or without the raisins
  5. fifi said: "I have read that grapefruit can affect the blood levels of lots of things. The major drug emporiums here issue a rather lengthy fact sheet and have started including known food interactions and instructions to take with food or on an empty stomach. On the rare occasion that I have to get a prescription I have actually started reading the things" i can definitely vouch for the grapefruit thing....bad for diabetics..which im really sad about since i love grapefruit..but being a diabetic makes it a major no no for me....same thing goes for orange juice...orange juice will send my blood sugar levels way up......
  6. either they eat out a great deal or they love microwave dinners..what floors me about that is how anybody could possibly do one or the other or both on a daily basis..of course there is another side to that...perhaps they live with somebody who does cook..mom...wife..husband...significant other of some sort..in which case they are not starvinmg...but it does floor me that there really are people ou there who really cant cook..which to me is really sad since they dont know what a truly great joy they are missing
  7. i am not afan of mcdonalds ...but in their defense... the only good thing ive seen mcdonalds sell so far is their salads..... though there are still better ones out there...the salads they sell..while they wont set the culinary world on fire.....you can at least eat them what floors me.... people who go to restaurants who are so darn picky....legitimate dietary restrictions aside....i know of a person who will throw a hissy fit if parsley is put on the plate ( i think as a garnish)...maybe its just me but i dont think that having parsley on a plate as a garnish or otherwise is a reason for throwing a hissy fit and returning the whole thing to the kitchen..to me it would seem to be a matter of just removing it and then eating your dinner...not a big deal another thing that floors me....my ex husband...often id ask him what he wanted for dinner...his standard reply would be oh i dont care...and then complain through the whole meal when it was set in front of him...im sure we all have at one time or another known somebody like that in our lives..so andie...i feel your pain..and for the couple who had no choice but to bring this gate crasher im sure it ranked right up there as one of the most embarrasing times in their lives...hopefully neither they nor you will ever have to put up with that sort of situation again..ive a feeling the gate crasher isnt a very happy person in life in general and is possibly a chronic complainer about all things...not just food i genuinely dont understand people like that..life provides us with a wonderful bounty of all things good..whether it be food orh teh beauty in nature or whatever we consider part of the bounty of life.....fortunaltey those moments when we are floored by things...it is just for those moments they are ahppening...and though we may remember them for a while..at some point we do get over it.....until when or if the next such moment comes along
  8. i guess i never thought about that one in my conscious mind about do i eat whats put in front of me or not...but the question gave me pause and i thought about it...no im not going to sit there and eat something that looks truly disgusting....and i do like my food to be flavorful... i like for my tastebuds to feel like they have died and gone to heaven..however there have been times when in a restaurant..i have been guilty of not saying anything about the food when its not quite up to par...i wait til after we have left and then my finace and i discuss it...on the other hand well also discuss those places that r excpetionally good as well.....if the food was not up to par...we simply dont go back as to the god awful airline food.....i can remember atime when it used to be so much better than it is now....way back in the sixties when my father used to work for one of the catei=ring services that catered to braniff...he would bring home these wonderful things and it was like heaven when he did..parfait ice creams...chicken that was real and not mush..u name it..he got to bring it home and i never knew my father wasnt a first class chef.....lol
  9. does that mean places like acemart might not carry them?
  10. i tried it just once and will never do it again..they lost too much flavor and no amount of bbq sauce can hide it either

    Turkey Leftovers

while this idea is a very simple one....its still one of my favorites...i make dinner rolls for thanksgiving in our home and because i tend to bake too many (perhaps on purpose)...what i like to do is split them in half put them on a plate....add a couple of layers of turkey breast and then ladle some of the leftover gravy over it and heat it up ..usually in the microwave...tastes wondrfull aside from that...without a doubt..turkey soup ive also discovered in recent years that if i pull some of the meat into strips and add cranberry sauce and mix it together..that too is wonderful...heating it is of course an option never thought of turkey enchiladas though...but i think i just might give it a whirl this year
  13. where does one get these rings you are talking about?

    Garbanzo Beans

no question about it for me....HUMMIS..yum yum....
  18. yes i think copyright issue can be a major issue in a public forum..though i do know from the article i read in the link provided in another post here...according to the article..the actual real derby pie recipe is a majorly guarded and copyrighted secret....so the recipe you suggeste din the magzine you pointed out likely would not be the same recipe and might possibly be in the public domain..however the magazine itself im sure has copyrights over its contents and still might possibly fall under copyright infringment were u to post it in the public domain here...so best not to ...saves a lot of trouble and keeps our websites and forums out of hot water..thanks for your help...the suggestions have been helpful
  19. tyler....that would be great if i happened to live in nyc....i live north of dallas in texas.....lol thanks for the help though......lol
  20. recently my fiance was telling me about a pie that is his absolute favorite which up til a couple of days ago..i had never even heard of he calls it a kentucky derby pie and he tells me its someting like a pecan pie but uses walnuts instead..and there are other things about it that make it different as well...only the walnut part stuck out... so..anyone out there have a decent recipe for this pie or know of a good site where i can find the recipe? thanks
  21. yep..i was hooked on chef boyardee ravioli when i was a kid and if the truth be known.....i still indulge in it from time to time..soups...campbeless vegetable beef soup...no substitute for me on this one...my mother seem to think i got my love for the stuff when she was pregant with me...apparanlty she craved it all the time
  22. i know how u feel about the stuffing cap...to me ranks right up there with that first taste of the skin that u have snithed after it comes out of the oven...i look forward to it this year more than in years past.....
  23. i knew what yorkshire pudding is but can u tell me what yorkshire parkins is?
  24. being a diabetic myself...and knowing others who have similar dietary limitations...i can most definitley vouch for the fact that splend is a wonderful sugar substitute and can be used for baking..i know as ive done it several times and while im not into desert very much anyway..i dont miss it if i cant have it..i also have asister and a mother and an uncle who r all diabetic and who have discovered the joys of splenda baking..and of course there is another sugar substitue out there that is equally as good for baking..but as i dontuse it..cant remember the name of it but it was brought to my attention very recently....i am sure someon else knows what it is im talking about so i will defer to the better memory.....lol
