A lentil and carrot soup with curry undertones followed by a simple squid, orzo and asparagus salad. It's hot! Very hot.

Yes, I appreciate that. Fortunately here very little is bagged and only in supermarkets surrounded by "farmer''s markets" where I can always buy exactly how many of whatever I may want. Today I bought one carrot. I did notice on my recent trip to the UK that bagged stuffed was much more the norm than when I left years ago! It is just contributing to the very food waste they claim to be fighting. But whatever and wherever I buy my vegetation , it is going to have the half-life scrubbed out of it in the controlled environment of MY kitchen.

Their website proudly boast of "Carefully removing all the unwanted brain, eyes, head, left with just the cheek for deep fried" Idiots.

The brains, or at least the heads, of shrimp are the tastiest part!

I never buy bagged vegetables. Why pay for someone to wash what you can, in all probability, wash better yourself? Why pay for the bag and the inert gas inside? And all the associated manhandling and distribution charges? Because it's more convenient for the stores? Screw them!

More often spelled "silkie". Yes. Soups and broths. Despite their black bones and flesh (the common Chinese name translates literally as 'black bone chicken'), the birds are white plumaged and I've heard they do indeed make good pets, but I'm not a pet person. More a dinner person.

I have decided to, at least temporarily, ignore the "roast" in the thread title as it seems unnecessarily restricting, and bring you this black beauty. Youβd be mad to roast it; this is a boiler, ideal in soups and stocks and considered to have huge medicinal benefits here in Chinaland.

I'll confess I'm not entirely sure what the point of this topic is, although I have plenty pictures of 'poultry porn' most was not intended for roasting. I think these quail were roasted though. and this pigeon

One of the nicest desserts I was ever served was in a tiny restaurant near Perpignan. SW France. It was simple peeled green grapes floating in straight Pernod. Anise is a spice, innit?

My mother, who was a girl during WWII but did have easy access to butter, switched to margarine after the war when it was marketed as some sort of luxury food! To this day she still uses it, applied to her toast or bread about half an inch thick! When I stayed with her recently, the first thing I did was buy some butter for my needs. Still, she has just turned 90 and is fit and well. It must be all the preservatives!
