  1. i passed something today that looked like it might belong on this list. i was actually en route to another drinking establishment, and could not investigate, but it was called "billymark's" or something like that, and it was i think on 9th ave around 38th or somewhere in that vicinity. sign out front said it boasts the longest happy "hour" in the city: daily from 2-7.
  2. i'm with you on this! i love a really complicated recipe that requires my complete concentration. the more challenging it is, the more relaxing, in a way, because you simply don't have time to worry about other things in your life. i used to bake all the time in school; now i rarely have the time, which is a real bummer. i'm looking forward to thanksgiving though!
  3. but then, tijuana itself is really just one big dive bar, now isn't it? ....ever been to "peanuts and beer"?
  4. anyone who spent time in beantown during their youth is going to nod slowly at this one: hong kong lounge in harvard square. home of the original scorpion bowl.
  5. you'll be disturbed to know that La Fondue has been around for quite a while. i remember going there in the 80s...but that was 'cuz they served alcohol to minors, which was pretty much the criterion i was working with back then.
  6. ooh, sounds like a fun place to visit. thanx for the tip!

    Diwan

...which is what i ended up doing tonight, after reading some of this thread and drooling...a poor substitute, i'm sure, but i could not rise above the craving that the sight of those dishes inspired...needless to say, i am hitting Diwan, like, this weekend.... thanks for sharing!

    Bagels

Sunrise Bagels in Montclair (Watchung Plaza, around the corner from Orbis Bistro) is pretty good. They've got indoor and some outdoor tables (nice in the warmer weather). Tasty bagel sandwiches.
  9. i could maybe make this. can i let you know next week?

    Worst Beer Ever Tasted

whew, sounds pretty bad. hey, i'm guessing hork = hurl? isn't there a theory that one indication of how important a thing (or activity) is to a particular culture is the number of words there are to describe it?

    Worst Beer Ever Tasted

Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer. that got my vote too. a close second would be the english Nut Brown Ale I had when I was trying to work my way through the rather extensive beer/ale menu at cornwall's pub in boston. you got a card with all the beers listed on it, and each time you ordered one, the server would stamp it. i can't remember what you won if you got through the list--i think you were honored with a plaque on the wall. didn't make it, but had fun trying. good times, good times.
  12. god, how I miss that place... you can buy prepared food at D&D, have them heat it up, and then sit and eat it in their cafe. i heartily recommend the crab cakes. one is truly a meal in itself and they give you a tasty remoulade to go with it. or, just grab a pint at the Tombs
  13. ecco-la on rt 46 west is in Parsippany, i think. i was only there once but enjoyed the food. in morristown, check out pazzo pazzo. we had our rehearsal dinner there and had a blast.

    Montclair

I have been to Corso twice and each time it has been fantastic. Last time we went, we walked in without reservations and the owner could not have been nicer. He is a super-friendly guy who makes you feel like you are a regular on your first visit. In fact, he remembered us from our first visit, which was probably about two months earlier. Anyway, there were no tables available on our second visit, so he set us up at a table in the kitchen, and explained that he plans to renovate that area of the kitchen in the future so that private parties can be seated there. It was really fun to observe the "behind the scenes" action. The owner's mom makes the pasta that they serve, and she was with us the entire time, kind of keeping an eye on us (in addition to our friendly server). The entire staff calls her "Mama." I ordered one of the pasta specials (linguini bolognese), and it was fabulous. We also got the roasted suckling pig (for the second time), which is amazingly tender and flavorful and served with roasted potatoes. Corso serves a goat cheese/honey/roma tomato appetizer that is not to be missed. The rock shrimp risotto cake app is also really tasty. I'll be returning in a few weeks when my Italian in-laws come to visit!
  15. I'm going tonight. Will report back.
  16. Rosie: In this week's Table Hopping, you listed a new place called Island Spice on Walnut St. in Montclair. Any additional info about that? Also, does anyone know anything about the restaurant/bar that opened around the corner from Walnut St. -- close to the Walnut St. train station? The name of the place escapes me at the moment, but I believe it is a man's name, like "Joe ___'s." The owners obviously spent a pile on renovating the place (it's pretty snazz), but I was wondering about the food. Thanks.

  18. My dad, too, and he grew up in Jersey City.
  19. Very interesting. When you do try it, please let us know how it turns out! Thanks.
  20. What size and quantity are you looking for. Also what type. I don't know if PatisFrance has a retail putlet, but I'm sure some kind soul might be willing to part with a kilo or two... Nick Actually, a kilo is just about the quantity that I would want (god, this sounds so illicit). I am looking for both dark (~ 70% cocoa) chocolate as well as milk chocolate. Thanks.
  21. Any suggestions where in north Jersey or NYC I can buy Valrhona or similar in larger quantities than 4 oz bars? Thanks.
