  1. Does the meyer lemon peel smell different from other lemons?

Yes, if you scratch a Meyer lemon you'll get a perfume that is distinctly different from a "regular" lemon. It's a bit difficult to describe, but it is less acidic and to me it has a floral component.

Thank you thank you...I bought a couple to experience the taste and I noticed a perfumy smell on my hands..I was worried that there was something wrong with them..the taste was wonderful though. I feel better now  thanks.

  2. Mifi - love the idea of beef bourg. w/ spatzle!  I've been serving my meaty/gravy stuff lately with polenta and I really like the idea of trying spatzle - thanks for the idea!!

doctortim - thanks for posting the mac n cheese photo.  That recipe has been recommended to me and I am going to try it soon.  My folks are not wild about it either, but I'm going to make it anyway.  They can eat it or not.  Wish we could share  !

demiglace - re: the potatoes - the stuffed potatoes are just baked, scooped out and smooshed up with shredded cheese, a little sour cream, a little cream cheese, butter, salt, pepper and chives.  Shove it all back in the skins, top with additional cheese and bake until crusty.    The basic recipe for the crock pot ones is here. It's actually from Taste of Home magazine .  I added a lot of really good cheddar and froze it.  I put it in a crock pot to keep warm for Xmas eve dinner and checked it about an hour before everyone was to arrive.  I will come out here and admit that they were like soup  !  I had Mr. Kim run to the store for some potato flakes and dumped them in until it all thickened up.  This did not happen when I made them the first time - I think that it was a combo of freezing and crock pot.  Anyway - they were the one thing that EVERY single person loved Christmas Eve  !

    Kim

Thanks I will have to try them both!!

  3. [Ok, as requested the Scalloped Tomato recipe is now on RecipeGullet.

Thanks for posting the recipe....can you describe your cheese potatoes please

Do you mean the stuffed baked ones that I served with the burgers or the ones with Christmas dinner that were in the crock pot?

    Kim

    Both..

  4. So what is the best way to store baquettes so that the crust stays crisp, but the bread doesn't go rock hard?

Try cooking them 3/4 of the way..then cool and wrap and freeze. I do that with fougasse. When I'm ready for them I bake from frozen. Works well. I don't know why it wouldn't work with baguettes. Maybe you could experiment with one baguette and let us know what happens! Have you tried Vienna bread yet? I really like it.

  5. It has been a while since I posted here. Nice to see everyone is still eating well. And the photos just keep getting better.

I'm playing with a new camera. Had to replace my Sony after it fell off the counter and hit the floor. I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18. Still trying to figure out most of the settings.

I had some local spot prawns in the freezer and used them in a spicy Asian style dish.

Nice prawns Ann T...missed your pics.

demiglace - Scotch chips - what a concept! Did you invent these?

Hi Kim Shook...no I didn't invent these..they have been in the family for a couple of generations now.

Loved your pics..that red striped plate is gorgeous..I was taken by the "Silly but traditional" Christmas tree..I think I'll do something like that next year..very cute and tasty I'm sure! Thanks for sharing.

  7. I watched the youtube link and thought it was pretty amusing, given that Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay are oceans apart in personality. I'm liking Oliver more and more every time I see his scruffy grown-up self. I'm not that familiar with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, I think I've seen him only once or twice on TV and have been to his website a few times, but I really appreciate his point of view very much. I'd love to see Big Food Fight. Soon!

I want animals to have happy little lives before I eat them. Is that too much to ask?

Why can't we get these great British programs right away? Doesn't the US export Hollywood crap to other nations immediately?

Anyway, back to Jamie at Home, I'm looking forward to tonight's show.

Edited to change RamsEy to RamsAy.

No it's not. I think it's our responsibility. I hope the big food fight gets aired on this side of the pond.

  8. Thanks for the link JudyB..very interesting. I hope there is a thread somewhere about this show.

Jamie with Gordon and Hugh...so funny. Don't know what the big food fight is about but this is Jamie related.

The "Big Food Fight" is a loosely connected series of programmes on Channel 4 (in the UK) challenging the way in which we eat and our food is produced.

The Channel 4 website here will give you an idea of the programmes they are showing.

The programmes with Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall have been concentrating on trying to stop people buying "battery" chickens due to the conditions in which they are kept.

  9. randi i have to try some of those ideas you have provided since i pack breakfast/lunch and many times dinner for john. where did you get those multi patitioned containers? sandy

I was hoping someone would ask about the container. Its a lock and lock container that I bought on Clement Street in San Francisco. Target has a good selection of Lock and Lock's too and you might be able to find the divided container there. QVC also has a great selection, a lot of different items you wont find in the stores. I have a great set of 3 round bowls that nest that I like to use when I make salad for Robin.

Hey Cali..are those the Starfrit ones? Your lunches look great by the way!

  10. I'm interested in cooking some southern dishes but haven't done any yet. Don't know of any places to get creole food in the Vanc. area..are there any? I've never been down to New Orleans and friends that have weren't interested in the food..just the party! I wonder if Oyama sells andouille sausage..hmm

Yes they do. I've bought andouille at Oyama. Can't say if it has an authentic flavour or not, but it's pretty darn tasty in my Jambalaya :-)

Thanks I'll get some next time I'm on GI.
