  1. wow, haven't had haw flakes in the longest time. not candy or anything like that, but how about that sorta sour white drink, came in packages of 4, tops sealed in green foil, about 2-3 oz each. hmm, gonna hafta get me some of those tomorrow. both.
  2. yes, that's more like it. the question was very broad and non-specific. Even if you get as specific as "Where can I get the best Shanghaiese food in Shanghai?" that's still general. but a start at least.
  3. and the peanut gallery manages to contribute something useful!!
  4. can't you just push it back an hour?
  5. yes, thanks, shiewie. i can see everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. very happy I tagged you.
  6. i never have pocky cravings, but when i go to tampopo, i sometimes want a drink, but i prefer something more interesting than what they have. i used to go try and go to midori mart, but oftentimes they were closed. we'll see how it is with fish and coffee.
  7. Lisa, the former Midori Mart moved in with Fish and Coffee. I commented previously here.
  8. all hillvalley's advice is good, but just wanted to comment on this in particular. it may be more for service staff than you though. don't have to figure out what the client wants, just check with them to see if they have eaten before taking down the buffet. can always check their place at the table or check with their server if that's easier. make a plate with everything, 2 if necessary.
  9. so, were you trying to say he's a Packers fan? Congrats, amir.
  10. are we getting people at all hours? i figure during the early part of your day, the US eastern half is seeing what's up just before going to bed. from noon until 3, the US western half is checking in. By the time they're done, our European contingent is around. During your normal hours there's the rest of Asia as well. Throw in Asians that check from home, and random others, and you're good. Does make me wonder a little more about foodblog readers, what percentage are in the US. same percentage as Egulleteers overall? anyway, this is just random speculation on my part. It's not like you're checking in every 5 minutes to see if some posted something on your thread, like I was.
  11. best what? are you talking about shanghai?
  12. yes, that happens a lot. but there's only so much you can plan for that. especially since you can't charge for it.
  13. is the adult portion of the meal entirely plated, or do you have the option of giving them a dessert bar?
  14. brownie bar sounds fine as well. the way we used to do it was after the ice cream was made, it's scooped out and placed on trays and re-froze. when you're ready to serve, you take all the scoops and put them in the container. would also suggest pading the bottom of a large container with ice (keeps ice cream cold longer, and also takes up space so container doesn't look so empty), with a service napkin in between the ice and ice cream. you can either have a server serve the ice cream or have the kids pick it up themselves; either way, best utensil is nice tongs.
  15. i'm not sure i understand. you think the parents would be offended by a buffet style dessert for the kids, because it's declasse or something? FWIW, i've worked somewhere between 30 and 100 bar/bat mitzvahs in the past 7 years, on the server side. based on what you've said so far: i'd go with 2 cakes, 1 candy bar-based, 1 other vanilla ice cream with bowls of crumbled oreo cookies, Reese's Pieces, peanuts, jimmies, chocolate sauce the monkeywrench for me is the low # of kids. if there's higher #s, you can have more choices. that's why the selection is so limited if this doesn't work, i would suggest you elaborate more on why the dessert bar type thing doesn't work. i've done plenty where the adults had a plated 3 course meal and the kids had a buffet that turned over to a dessert buffet.
  16. is preserved bean paste the same as fermented tofu? (Cantonese: foo yuur)
  17. nah, yours are way cooler. that's why i tagged you. wanna hear about KL. i would say more than slightly more Malaysianized.
  18. OK despite the fact that you're done: Is that the stuff labeled Yu Choy in the asian supermarkets? Because I've been eating that stuff like it's going out of style in the last couple weeks... yea, that's probably it.
  19. New Yorkers propagate that mean and nasty reputation rumor because we don't want our quiet little town overrun with tourists who will exploit us and take advantage of our kind and gentle ways. interesting how that dichotomy works, isn't it?
  20. is margon the place on 8th mentioned? list, what list? aren't we in the embryonic stages of forming it now?
  21. was dat, shittin', skippin', and strippin' ?? Close... it's what many men do first thing in the morning: shit, shower & shave. Okay... Shiewie needs to tell us about more cool food before this thread veers dangerously off course. agreed. i'll pm you.
  22. i agree on both counts. naturally, the lower priced the meal, the more it is tolerable. actually, above $10 for the meal, it isn't tolerable for me.
