  1. I agree, we should be supporting this place.. I have emailed the reviewer from the Starledger and am trying to find the email address of the reviewer for the NYT NJ section... Hopefully, a couple of good reviews in a Newspaper will get them more recognition..
  2. The Second Sister rabbit dish is at the one in the west 50's.. Its just goes by a different name.. Its Second Sisters at the GS on the east and just cold spicy rabbit west..
  3. Hey UE, Grand Sichuan Eastern is apart of the Grand Sichuan Intl group.. Seperate owners, but still has most of the same dishes.. I use to live by here and this was the one I frequented.. If you look for Grand Sichuan on this board you will find many posts about it.. Its a great place, enjoy your meal..
  4. 19 Commerce St Flemington, NJ I am sorry for not posting it upthread.. Edit to add: Rlibkind, I did not actually know that.. But it makes perfect sense.. Great chips and nothing goes to waste in typical P-Dutch Fashion..
  5. Percyn, Much respect on the Pork Roll.. I was in a supermarket in New Jersey today and also saw an Americas Best version of the Pork Roll being sold.. I wonder if they distribute there P-Roll around the country. This morning, I woke up at 630 at my Parent's.. My father had great spread.. Bialys, Bagels, Chubs,Sturgeon,Lox and Cream Cheese.. Was awesome.. I am partial to a Jersey Bagel.. Chub, Cream Cheese, Raw Onion, Caper.. Lox, Sturgeon, Cream Cheese.. ( Here is a half of Bialy.. The holey half.. Toasted with butter About when normal people were eating breakfast, we enjoyed after breakfast dessert.. Blueberry and Coconut Pie from the Dutch Market...
  6. Dutch Country Farmers Market Flemington NJ 19 Commerce St (908)806-8476 My parents and us took a trip to the Flemington Dutch Market this weekend.. My mother who often shops at Princeton Dutch Market, has heard many good things about this place.. I guess driving distances for food is in my blood.. My family doesnt give a second thought to driving an hour just to get an ice cream, or to caramel apple.. Delicious Orchard which is a half hour away was a regular weekly stop.. Despite the fact, while growing up, my town, East Brunswick, had a half a dozen Farm Stores.. Here there are separate vendors selling a wide variety of goods.. There is a Butcher, there is a BBQ Stand, A Baker, Dairy and Cheese, Produce, Ice Cream, Candy and Pretzel, Seafood, an All You Can Eat Restaurant, and a place to buy prepared foods.. All your grocery needs fulfilled under one roof.. Homemade Preztels being hand done.. Are there never is a short of preztels when it comes to the Dutch.. Xtra Dark Splits We stopped by to get cheese.. Here they have larger variety of cheeses and butters.. I am very partial to the farmers and spicy cheeses.. I bought a Farmers and Jalalpeno/Cayenne Cheese.. I was recently talking about these and how much I loved them as a kid.. I found them on the bottom shelf at the bakery.. Though mine had the icing and were covered in rainbow sprinkles, these were an ok version.. I asked if they have them with sprinkles and they told me they often do.. Always fun to stop by the candy shelf.. Unfortunately, it looks better then it is.. Stopped by to look at the buffet.. It didnt look to appealing.. But I was there at the end of the day... I wasnt too happy with the ice cream place either.. The sell Hershey Brand Ice Cream.. I expect homemade.. I did notice a very usefull piece of information.. This might be a good time to visit here for the first time.. I stopped by the deli case as they were cleaning it out for the day.. I quickly got a Garlic Ring Bologna and some Summer Sausage.. The ring bologna I like to eat with or with out a cracker, and put cheese and mustard I buy at the market.. If you never had summer sausage, I would say its a must.. Its a highly seasoned mixture of parts I would say.. Dont get the sweet one, just the regular.. There are two exceptable ways of eating it.. 1)Roll-Up 2) Add cream cheese and roll 3)Eat it The other exceptable way is to eat in a sandwich with butter white bread and homemade chips.. We also took home a macaroni salad, chicken salad, carrot salad, and the star, which is the best version I have had.. A cauliflower and broccoli salad with bacon and cheese.. It was outrageous.. A must get: I really just gave a small and incomplete overview of what this place offers.. I prefer the Princeton Market to this.. But if you are closer to Flemington, I would go here.. Place is interesting and has good food..
  7. haha.. That is funny.. Only John would notice the hot dogs at an Orchard.. The man is a guru..
  8. They will be so busy looking for coke, that they wont notice the rum..
  9. Thanks for the photos titmfatied... I have fond memories of this place growing up.. Did you buy any pies, I wonder if they are as good as I remember..
  10. I would say the condom method might be your last option..
  11. The directions are good.. It is going to be the same distance from 13a or 13.. I havent seen the 13 directions though..
  12. Closed on Mondays.. They are opened Tues through Sunday... Tues- Thursday kitchen is open till 9... Friday and Saturday kitchen is open till 10.. Place opens at 11:30 am..
  13. Thats a beautiful group of photos.. Did you get the t-bones at a local place? Here is what I have to add.. Its a 2 pound smoked beef rib..
  14. Tmus, thanks for your kind words and for telling us about this place.. And yeh, I was just shocked at how well the sweet potato fries were done.. I have not actually seen the special board.. But I do know I saw about 8 beef ribs in yesterday. I think its something they keep forgetting to put on the menu.. I would call ahead to double check.. In terms of the reservation thing, I would be surprised if they do.. But notice the next time you go in, there is an upstairs.. I know that they are planning on opening that up, if/when the business calls for it..
  15. Had dinner here last night.. My girl was getting the Japanese Hair straightening thing done, so me and my buddy went down to meet her.. We didnt really know where we were going, so we were happy to come across a familiar place.. I ordered for the table.. I was really in a seafood mood so that is what I ordered.. We started with the mussles in a spicy hotpot.. I am always skeptical when the mussles are served on the half shell.. I like to see that they have opened by themselves.. But they tasted fresh but, a little over cooked.. Loved the spicy sauce.. Next we had the salt crusted shrimp.. These were really enjoyable.. Fried perfectly, salty, with no excess oil behind.. They were great.. Keeping with the fried, we ordered Canadian Crab deep fried.. I enjoyed the preparation.. Again, fried very well. Not oily or greasy.. The meat inside the shell was moist and perfect.. It was fun to sit around the table and casualy pick at the meat while talking and drinking.. I dipped mine in vinegar.. We also got a side of steamed pea shoots.. Again great with vinegar.. We also ordered pan fried noodles with beef.. A very respectable rendition.. The restaurant was enjoyable.. I really was craving seafood and I was not disappointed.. There are certainly other things to try.. After reading the thread this morning the lobster dish sounds great... There were people happily eating duck and there was a couple of Porkchop and Pork dishes I would like to try.. Also some whole fish dishes.. But this hit the spot just fine.. Service was "efficient" and the place was comfortable...
  16. Here is a shot of the inside.. Being that the place has been totally rebuilt, the place is clean and really comfortable.. They have these tin cielings that give it an old school feel.. Like this shot.. Here are some of the beers on tap.. On the right there is Birch Beer on tap.. Such a good thing.. So here is todays lunch.. I got a pulled pork sandwich with fries.. Also got a side of there awesome chili.. Pulled pork sandwich.. With that really great sauce they use on the pork and I added some of there awesome BBQ sauce to everything.. Served on a simple bun.. Very good.. However, I prefered it just on a plate to experience the true flavor of the meat.. My one major hang up is the fries.. Certainly the fries a good.. But, I would really love if they did homemade fries, maybe tossed with some garlic and parsley.. Or perhaps they would make a chili cheese fries, just because that chili is so amazing.. "Front Street Fries" perhaps? The place has been open for about 4 weeks and is producing amazing meat.. Thats first and foremost.. Here is the chili.. When asked what was in it, I was told pretty much everything they offer.. Its a mixture of pork, brisket, sausage, ribs, just a lot of meat.. Its not spicy, its again, a little sweet, a little smokey and very hearty.. I loved it.. One of my favorite chili's this side of Wisco and Ohio.. While leaving, I was introduced to an item they dont have on there menu.. Its there "Fred Flinestone" special.. This is just a monsterous smoked beef rib.. This thing most likely weighed 2 pounds.. At like 14 bucks, its a great deal.. But more importantly, the taste. Its like eating a big juicy smoked steak.. I might really have to return tomorrow just for this.. I had a little piece and it wasnt enough.. The thing is just gorgeous.. I am almost definately going back tomorrow.. Take that bone and wear around my neck, so I can gnaw on it from time to time..
  17. Front St. Smokehouse 1 South Front St 908-354-1818 The place is great.. Let me just come out and say it, they are offering some of the better BBQ I have had.. To eat here is to get a lesson in Pork.. The Pitmaster brings out and shines a spotlight on all the wonders of the Oink.. Not over sauced, not over rubbed or smoked, you can tell this man has a vision on what BBQ should be.. Here is the menu: The BBQ is Memphis style.. A dry rub is applied and the meat is put in the 700lb Ole Hickory Smoker.. There it is smoked and slow cooked for __ _ many hours, occasionally being spray with __ _ to season and moisten.. So yesterday, for lunch, I ordered this combo plate.. Pulled Pork, Brisket,Ribs, Chicken, Mac and Cheese, sweet potato fries, and cornbread muffin.. This let me try most of there offerings.. I was really impressed, it was a ton of food and it was all very good.. Here is the plate minus the ribs.. In order to get a clear shot, I put them off to the side.. Oh here they are.. Lighty tug off the bone, perfectly pink and juicy, beautiful ribs.. The dry rub is geared to highlight the sweetness of the ribs.. Not spicy, but well seasoned.. The smoke and and the rub, really draw out the flavors of the Pork.. Goes really well with there "rich mans" version of Peter Luger Sauce. The homemade house BBQ sauce is just fantastic and I could just drink it with straw.. I was trying to show in this photo just how moist the chicken is.. BBQ chicken is not my favorite thing, but this is a great piece of chicken right here.. Here is the shot of the brisket.. Notice the smoke ring.. Also notice that nice layer of fat on the opposite end.. A thing of beauty.. One more shot: Though there isnt a great shot of it, the pulled pork might be my favorite.. Its actually between the Ribs and the Pork.. The Pork is just done so well.. Not a ton of smokey crunch skin bits, but damn good.. There is some like white wine or maybe vinegary undertaste that I have not had, but cant get enough of.. Also on the plate were the Mac and Cheese, beans and sweet potato fries. The Mac was solid.. Nothing exceptional, but a good side.. More cheesey then most BBQ places, which is a plus.. It also had the comforting feel of an herb crust baked on top.. The beans were good, but I felt the subtle pork flavor couldnt compete with the beans.. The sweet potato fries are awesome.. Fried perfectly, crunchier then any I have had before.. I like them better then there french fries.. Washed down with a Briar's Birch Beer on tap in a frozen mug.. Icy bits of Birch Beer Floating around, dripping down the sides and freezing.. Its a thing of beauty.. This place is for people who appreciate BBQ.. You are not going to come here and get a really saucy, over smoked, piece of meat.. There is no liquid smoke, there is no KC style sauce that drowns the meat.. Here, Pork is on display in all its beauty.. Great cuts and quality of meat, prepared by a man who knows his Oink.. I would choose this place over any BBQ place in New York or New Jersey that I have tried.. Note: I have heard of the owner through business (having nothing to do with restaurants), but have never met him before.. After going to his place and loving his food and talking about BBQ with him.. He invited me to go to a competition with him.. I paid for all my food.. The bottom line is, if the food wasnt as good as I say it is, I wouldnt travel halfway across the country paying my own way, to be his grunt ..
  18. Can anyone point me to a good Absinthe Bar..
  19. Just an update: here's how my weekend in NYC is shaping up: Arriving on a Friday at 6pm. Need to check into hotel on east-side of Midtown. Help me fill in the blanks please. 1. Friday dinner? My companions and I will be tired and probably not out for something uber involved - but good. Also, we'd like to stay near the hotel. 2. Saturday lunch: Per SE, so Saturday dinner will probably be skipped or snacked. 3. Sunday dinner: u.e. ← Since you are staying in Midtown East.. I would tell you to go to this restaurant the Night you get in.. The dress is casual and its really neat.. It will get you into the New York vibe immediately.. Here is a review I wrote.. saka gura Sakagura ($$$) Japanese 211 E 43rd St, New York 10017 Btwn 2nd & 3rd Ave
  20. Rich, I am confused by your post.. Are you saying this place,Sapori d'Ischia, is better then any other Italian in Manhattan? I am excited to try the place.. Also, I was with most of your suggestions until you mentioned Mesa Grill.. That place is g-d awful, obviously IMO.. But I have been there a few times and made an effort to like it.. Even went to the place in Vegas.. I just cant find one good thing to say about it.
  21. Then a lot of people on here suck too, because a number of folks on this board, myself included, also contribute to Chowhound in various ways. I find Chowhound to be a useful resource, especially when I am traveling. I do not consider it a rival or threat to E-G, the two are totally different and serve different purposes. We'll see what happens... ← I said the community does.. The sum of the parts, not the parts.. Was not directed at you Trish.. Also I use to be on Chowhoud, I even made the book..
  22. I was thinking of a chicken larb wrap w/ cashews..Throw in some toasted rice, lime rinds, chili peppers, fish sauce.. Life is good..
  23. Another suggestion would be to order them something from the appetizer section and/or a side of vegetables, rice, fries, salad or pasta..
  24. Chowhound sucks, as does there community.. The whole board consists of people reposting and rehashing there same anonymous opinions.. If it werent for the words Katz's, Grand Sichuan, Babbo, or best BBQ, the site would have nothing to talk about.. I look from time to time, only to see the same conversations from 2 years ago.. Need a quick recommendation for a group of women looking for a "sex in the city" type place, Or where to take a 12 year old for her birthday, then you can listen to the same 5 choices.. As Jim Leff leaves, so does anything worth while on that site..
  25. Just got back from Vegas this weekend.. After a couple of failed attempts, I had dinner one night.. While deciding what to order we got a quick bacon wrapped shrimp, wrapped in a crispy wanton strip.. Served with a sweet and sour sauce.. As good as you think.. Started with the papaya and catfish salad.. An incredible tastey and spicy papaya salad w/ cashews and perfectly fried catfish pieces.. On the salad alone I drank two malt Thai beers.. We then had crispy puffed rice in a sour fish sauce..With lots Thai basil, red onion, nuts and ham pieces.. Good stuff, lots of different flavors and textures.. In a larger group I would have gotten the catfish.. But a smaller fish, we opted for a sweet and sour whole fried pompano.. Pork Penang: Pork was cooked wonderfully, the Penang Sauce is solid.. The food is always really good and never disappoints.. For me, its a great way to take a breather from the Hotels...
