  1. Had to pass by Elizabeth today, so we had lunch at Chick's.. Was happy that I was able to have some wine because its Saturday... They have a regular menu, but I find the specials come out more quickly... We started with shrimp and garlic from the regular menu.. Garlic, wine, oil, shrimp, lemon and a couple shots of red pepper.. Whats not to love.. Bite: From the Specials.. Perfectly char grilled Sea Bass.. The Special Pork and clams with fried potatoes, and pickled vegetables.. This dish was just superb, the pork, clams and fried potatoes, were hanging out in this garlic stock, and the pickled vegetables cut through really nicely.. Tiramisu: Not great.. But the entire thing was marscapone.. So how bad could it be.. Flan was a little grainy.. But good.. Cortado like drink.. Maybe they call it cortado too.. Steamed milk and espresso.. Really milky and frothy.. A drink like this and I am ready for a nap.. Place is friendly, clean, a good value, and I would say close to being great.. I have never had a bad meal here..
  2. Thank you, thank you.. I really cant wait to get word.. I should know by Monday which apartment I will have..
  3. One vote yes for me..The only thing that has change is, I am no longer eleven eating with my family.. But its not there fault..

Particularly in a small restaurant like Veritas, with only 15 tables or so.. The baby pool gets alot warmer then the ocean, when someone desides to pee in it..
  5. If you havent been to Celeste yet.. I would tell you to go there.. It has been written about a lot on this site..They have good pizza and homemade pasta.. Gennaro is another option.. I have never been, but have good things..
  6. Well we are waiting to here back on this apartment.. Kitchen looks fine, as does the area.. Love having a balcony.. apartment hopefully
  7. Thanks Mike.. Seeing this thread again takes me back.. The whole trip was three days.. We basically made a mad dash for Maine.. We drove from Manhattan to Bar Harbor.. Once in Bar Harbor we pretty much turned around and slowly cruised down.. I dont remember the cost of the rolls...But there wasnt a huge price change between places. I would guess somewhere between 12-15 bucks a roll.
  8. Melted white chocolate with whole milk.. Added a tablespoon of espresso.. Nice little sugar rush..
  9. Like a chocolate covered strawberry batter fried or like in a pastry with goat cheese.. Just remembering fried apple pies.. How could I forget.
  10. Anyone deep fry fruit.. Not just a piece of prosciutto wrapped melon..Although deep frying prosciutto wrapped melon sounds very good..

    Telepan

Went to Telepan last night. Besides having an enjoyable meal, the whole experiences was great. I like the space, I like the menu, I like the wine offerings, the staff was smart and friendly.. The place is well thought out, down to the homemade onions in my girls gibson.. We arrived at 730 for our 930 reservation. There were no available tables, so we decided to sit at the bar and have a few drinks.. During drink two, I decided to look at the menu.. It was very impressive. Pork dishes, foie gras, duck dishes, egg dishes, ok, I am sold.. The only problem was decided what to get.. We decided to have an appetizer while we waited.. So we went with the foie gras.. Accompanied by a citrus jam and a frisee salad with duck proscuitto and a few white almonds. I really felt the citrus went so well with the foie gras.. I believe there were candied blood orange peels.. It was interesting because my girl was tasting the to compliment the orange, while I enjoyed the rich and creaminess of the liver better. The frisee salad had hints of sesame oil. The duck prosciutto was ok, but better then not being there. We drank a glass of Sauterne.. It was suggested by the bartender, who despite working his first night there, knew the menu and there wine well. At this point in the evening we were told that a table would be ready for us.. When we were seated, I missed sitting next to my girl, so we went back to the bar. Its a comfortable bar, that is designed to serve food. The bread guy even included the bar into his rounds. We were served warm bread three times.. There was a fennel raisin that was just awesome.. Sugary green raisins with fennel, yes sir. Then there was a five grain and a (fill in later).. These two were good.. The menu is solid.. The type of menu where I could have happily eaten any selection offered. The type of menu where while I am enjoying what I am eating, in the back of my mind, I am thinking about a choice I passed up. We ordered the 55 dollar prix fix. Which means any three menu selections and a dessert.. We both ordered the hen of the woods mushrooms with a poached egg.. The man should run a clinic on how to poach an egg.. I dont know what he did, but it was the most perfectly made thing I have ever eaten. I am telling you, like some zen master, he could open a shop that just served poached eggs.. With frisee, the mushrooms and these croutons, I really enjoyed the salad.. There was a light taste of sherry vinegar in the dish. My one criticism would be the salad was missing something salty. I make a similar salad to this where I add chubs, or some smoked fish.. There is an inhouse(in the backyard) smoke trout on the menu. So maybe they dont want to over do it. It would make this dish superb. Action squirt shot. From here we decided to get different things to share.. I went with the slow cooked pork ravioli.. It was very tastey..Slow cooked pork mixed with ricotta cheese stuffed in a ravioli a pan fried. I could swear there was another cheese in the ravioli.. But the menu stated one.. Served along side was a pesto which had a good deal of cheese in it.. The other sauce escapes me.. My girl had the sliced duck breast with a foie gras custard..I dont remember too much about the dish.. She really liked it and raved about the foie gras custard.. Next my girl had the short rib served in a beet sauce with potato dumplings.. This dish was off.. The short rib was dry.. I wasnt a big fan, meaning the dish was good.. Just not over the top.. I had the Heritage Pork which had Spareribs, smoked sausage from there backyard, confit, loin and cured bacon.. This was a porkfest on a plate, or a desconstructed cassoulet.. It was really enjoyable.. Served on the side was a gratin of beans cooked Cassoulet style..They were outstanding.. This dish is going to be hard not to get again the next time I go.. MMM, I could go for those right now.. For dessert we had a couple of good selection.. My girl got the caramel brioche profiteroles.. Served with a vanilla ice cream.. She loved them.. Peanut butter and milk chocolate mousse cake peanut brittle ice cream and huckleberry gelée with a dab of chocolate sauce.. This too was great.. Almost like a peanut butter and jelly chocolate sandwich.. I am a fan.. Overall, I was very impressed by the place.. They seem to have a vision and they are executing it very well.. They are providing interesting, skillfully prepared food, with well priced and paired wines.. The bartenders are quick to give you tastes of wine and even bought us a round. Every glass of wine we tasted or drank last night, about 11 in total, was solid.. While we were eating, a pair walked up to the bar and ordered two glasses of red wine.. Telling the bartender that they didnt like the taste, without flinching, the bartender quickly took the wine away and poured them two different glasses he suggested.. End of story.. Being that I ate at this restaurant last night because I cancelled a reservation at a different restaurant do to a rude Manager, I dont take service like this for granted.. This place is a gem and will be around for a long time..
  12. Perhaps, but the poster has been mysterious about the length of his stay in Paris. I suppose if it were 2 weeks or more, I might have more of an understanding about cooking in. It also seems daunting to find a well-equipped kitchen in Paris for a short-term rental. Sure, in the "Campagne" larger equipped kitchens might be easier to find. And then there is the issue of kitchen accessories, pots, pans, utensils, and small appliances. If I were doing 10 days in Paris, my thoughts are... that's 20 terrific restaurant experiences, and 10 great " coffee & tartines". But of course, "chacun a son gout!" ← I will be in Paris for about 13 days.. Which means 5 meals a day with a dessert after each meal..
  13. I would liken it more to going to the Caribbean and going to a tanning salon while you are there.. But if you know anything from my past trips, I am not trying to skip any meals, just add a couple..
  14. Thanks Linda.. I will take this into consideration...
  15. I was nervous about not having a concierge as well.. But a lot of the apartment providing companies, thanks to your websites, are based out of America.. They offer all the ammenities that a concierge would.. From reservations to picking us up at the airport..
  16. Sorry I didnt write the address.. The Place 901 Boston Post Rd. Guilford, CT 203-453-9276 The Place is seasonal.. Open from Late April to October.. Call for details.. Report back on your trip...

The whole situation was handled so poorly.. I really am just so turned off by them.. I also wanted to correct a statement I made earlier.. When making the reservation we told them that we wont confirm because of our busy schedule.. Then at the message that was left this morning it gave no mention of giving away our table.. The bottom line is, they had the table the whole time and wanted to teach us a lesson or something by taking it away? The girl Megan was so rude to my girlfriend and the guy was so rude to me.. Personal attacks, accusations, raising his voice, and then lecturing me.. He cut me off when I was speaking and was truly hurtful.. I guess they are just so busy they dont need my business.. The beauty of New York is all the options I have.. And thats all I have to say about that..

Ok.. So I am in the middle of a meeting and I am still really pissed. I cant let this go.. The woman on the phone Megan was extremely rude to my girlfriend.. This guy Tim lectured me, called my girlfriend a liar, and raised his voice.. I seriously calmly sat there and took it.. The spitefull side of me wanted to just not show up for my reservation.. But I am better then that and him for that matter.. I called him, told him I was unhappy with how I was treated and he still called my girlfriend a liar after that and offered no apology.. I will never go here.. Its sad because I wanted to go.. After reading in Kitchen Confidential how precise and what a perfectionist the owner/chef is.. I would expect the service to be the same..Tell me that cripsy pork wasnt that good Mikey

Nice, Tim the manager.. A little snotty, but he let us back in.. Decided to lecture me on how to confirm a reservation.. Because of my girlfriend I bit my lip and allowed him his unproffessional power trip.. Whatever..

We didnt confirm our reservation this morning.. We received a call at 10 am telling us to call before 2.. We called about an hour ago and they gave our table away.. Is this possible? I am speaking with the manager at 4.. What are my chances, how could they have given the table away with in an hour?
  21. Bravo Jason...You have incorporated WC into Thanksgiving and now Valentines Day.. The man is a genius..
  22. Didn't mean to sound offended. Also didn't need to direct my comments about restaurants jacking up prices to you personally (unless you're actually reponsible. ) I guess the comment just stuck me because of the number of people I know (always men) who claim they don't want to do anything for Valentine's Day because they don't want to be forced into doing something by a "fake holiday" and claim that instead they should celebrate their wife (or mother or father) year round. I can certainly understand the sentiment, but I find that most of those people don't celebrate their wives (or mothers or fathers) year round. So, really it is one less day they celebrate them (leaving, generally, only Christmas). If you really want to celebrate someone, you usually look for additional opportunities, not try to get out of them. On a personal note, I have had a lovely time with Valentine's Day with my wife. A couple of times we have spent the weekend in Paris (which is always a good thing, regardless of when, but nice as a Valentine's trip because it is just another day in Paris) and we usually use it as an opportunity to try a new restaurant (since my wife tries to put some boundaries on my "restauranting", this is a day I know I will always eat well). It is also a day I know I can go out with just my wife and no one else can try to tag along. Hey, on the Veritas note, I highly recommend the Tender, Crispy Pork. ← Nice, I am all over the crispy Pork.. Not responsible for jacking up the restaurant prices.. Although, if there was a way I could....hmmm Have a great night at Alto.
  23. I consider most holidays obnoxious. Not the original intent, just the bastardization.. Everyday is an opportunity to celebrate. I am not judging anyone for doing anything, I am sorry if I offended you..
  24. Didnt escape it entirely.. Since, I am in the industry that helps create and promote these obnoxious Holidays, I must say I love Valentines Day.. Personally, I think today is just another day to heard the masses and fill people with some artificial sense of emotion.. Tonight we are making dinner.. Tomorrow night we are going to Veritas for half the price and double the offerings..
  25. I think its time to break out the kitty litter cake..
