Deer can also be a problem. However venison fed on grapes is delicious.
  2. He says he tried a variety of methods including oven roasting with added moisture. His contention is that it as dry and "just didn't taste good". The only method he found that worked was cutting the meat into strips, pounding to tenderize, then cubing, breading and frying. He's now gorumand but I think his wife knows how to cook and he seems to do well cooking vension and wild duck. Perhaps there's more than one variety of wild turkey? This one was described as having little to no "dark meat". Poor Turkey didn't have a leg to stand on.
  3. What we need are pocket red wines.
  4. So I've been on the road for six hours and need food to take medication. I enter a small mountain resort community and look for the basic food place. Enter and ask for a cheeseburger lettuce and tomato no dressing of any kind and a beer. Beer is welcomed, Enter the burger... everything I ordered plus MAYO, MUSTARD, KETCHUP, PICKLES, ONIONS AND PEPPERS. I called the waitress over and asked what did I order? She looks at the pad and repeats my order to me. Send burger back. Watch in the open doorway as the cook Washes the burger in the sink and puts on it on a new roll. She brings it back (mind you she has watched this) and when I refused it all I got was a torrent of @^%$*&"?$ from both of them so I did not even pay for the beer. Lucky for 7-11 where a fruit pie enables you to have enough in the stomach to medicate.
  5. Drive up to Marshall and go to Hog Island. Bring a nice white wine buy a knife there and as many oysters as you like. And find a table. Pig out. Oh Hog Island does ship go to there website http://www.hogislandoyster.com/Section1/Got_Oysters.html
  6. E mail the pics to me I'm from Brooklyn so he can't scare me, but I live in California and will run them through Romania .
  7. If broccoli cheese bake is any thing like Broccoli corn bake I'd love it. Still make it every Thanksgiving.
  8. Good luck on pan frying that steak. You need the Great Outdoors in that place. Think BBQ Roof; It's the best place for apt dwellers. Filters are best cleaned in a dishwasher, if can usually be obtained from friends with wine or other digestible items.
  9. Since I got my Dansko's that's all I wear.
  10. I believe I read 7 years, out of consideration for the one 25-man enterprise that produces foie gras in California. I think that's more time than the State gives GM to reduce pollution. Incidentally, the foie gras operation is near Stockton, a fur piece from Sonoma. There's no dam POLLUTION these people are trying to put My friends out of business because they produce a legitimate food product that was invented by the egyptians. They have singled out the smallest poultry producer in the US.
  11. So what is the state of the food scene in Babylon? I remember the Seafood places in Bayshore Captain Bill's and Gil Clarks also Flynns. Don't remember any places in Babylon or West Islip except that place at the end of Higbee Ln. Blue Point closed??? They had the best way to do clams , 1 iron ring 2" high,8-10 feet in dia,wet newspaper on ground, add ring pack, clams muscle side up until full, Add 5 foot high of twigs 1/2 " dia or less. Light on fire. When burned down sweep off the ashes and give everyone a fork with a lead ball cast on one end and a welders glove. pick up a clam, smack with the ball ,extract with the fork, enjoy crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Don't miss winter though.
  12. Turn down the heat and let them caramelize. If you can see burn rings either heats to high or you need better cookware but carmelizing is not frying.
  13. Tuesday nite market started on April 6th in Sonoma. I'll be there tonite.
  14. Thats hard to say; 20% at a local where I'm known,20% out for good service food an a reasonably priced wine list. In my opinion , overpriced corkage, when you bring and buy a bottle and overpriced wine lists = lesser tip when it's not the servers fault. And I won't go back. X amount of dollars for dinner= FOOD, WINE, SERVICE.
  15. Think Sonoma Valley 1 day, Alexander, Russian River, Dry Creek Valleys 1-3 days, Napa 1-3 days. This allows time to eat, drink and enjoy your self. Pick your wineries beforehand and also your restaurants. We who live here are always glad to help. Spend at least one night here or you'll feel rushed.
  16. The diner in question would have been west of willow st across from Tollen or totten place about a third of the way to Deer Park Ave on the south side of the hwy.
  17. In Babylon itself? No. But this place is also on the south side of Montauk Highway and it's barely outside the limits of Babylon Village - I trust you're not, um, confusing the two? No, of course you wouldn't be, you're a local. Sorry. Where was it? There's a place right in the village, on the north side of Montauk Hwy, that bears all the architectural hallmarks of having once been a diner, but it has long been converted into a Chinese restaurant. It's just a door or two west of the old Town Hall, practically across from the movie theatre. Ring any bells? BTW, I have a feeling they're a little less lax about carding these days.... This one was on the left just as you entered town. It was old in 66 so it's probably gone by now. Drinking age was 18 back then. Chinese place was a diner.
  18. I used to go to that diner after the movies at the Babylon theatre on Friday nite. Is the diner in Babylon on the south side of Montauk hwy still there? We'd buy beer there cause they did not card you. Your taking me back to my childhood.
  19. Green Apple Books out on Clement St. Not near Nob Hill but great Chinese- American mixed community with restaurants and shops and grocery stores. Public transit accessible.
  20. Best thing that I ever found was an old clever from the Butcher trade. Can't find one today. Bead blasted fixed the handle and sharpened. $2.00. It's 4 inches high, 6.5 inches long and 3/16 thick weighs in at about 2-3 lb.. Bring on the chicken and the ribs.
  21. Congrats on your Golden Gully. Can't wait to see some pictures of where I grew up. Do you tong, rake, short rake or toe dig your clams?
  22. If you don't rinse you will shit like you never shat before. It's common camping malady when trying to save water.
  23. You know I took the day off and had one before lunch. Might be time to have another since the sun refuses to come out. Looks like no Petanque today.
  24. It's true there are leaking 55 gal drums of waste at the islands.
