  1. Is Paitti the Italian place on the corner basically across from The Girl & the Fig? ← That's the one. It was part of a chain and I hear 4-5 of them are closing.
  2. In the latest news from Sonoma, Paitti has closed and The Generals Daughter is being sold. I think that both events are good news for this town.
  3. See, I told you.
  4. Listen carefully. Boneless chicken breasts, flatten with large pot waxed paper top and bottom, mix equal parts grated cheese and breadcrumbs, coat breast ,press in, repeat other side. Heat oil in pan, add breasts, cook until brown, turn reduce heat cook until brown. Plump juicy breasts, serve with pasta alfredo and a salad. Pot roast takes about 3-4 hours slowly at a simmer.
  5. Veneered trupan mdf with solid wood edging is also an option. Very stable, but veneer still is not solid wood. More info. http://www.schallerhardwood.com/new_page_2.htm
  6. If you enroll in your local Junior College and take at least one course and get a student ID card you can buy software at the educational discount. When I bought Photoshop it was $125 as opposed to $500.
  7. If it's high end woodwork some attempt will be made to match the grain in a slab door. Your picture shows low end quality with the mixing of the grain. You can get lumber core plywood that gives the best of both worlds. Plywood is more stable.
  8. It's spelled SONOMA. We do not have to defend our selves. We just wish people would get their geography straight.
  9. Yes! See the world-famous chip on the shoulder of all Sonomans before venturing into Napa! Sorry. Another local joke! Seriously, I much prefer Sonoma and parts of Sonoma county to Napa in many ways but there's a self-inflicted inferioriity complex among lots of the residents. It's very odd to me as they are such completely different places. In fairness, things like Food TV's Gordon Elliot broadcasting from the town of Petaluma (in Sonoma County) announcing, "I'm here in Petaluma in the heart of the beautiful Napa Valley!" don't help. ← How about defending your area with some specifics? What is great in your area? Where do you shop? I'm going to have to assume that Napa indeed is the superior area Many, many years ago I frequented the Novato / Petaluma area and I seem to remember some good food shops. This isn't a topic about restaurants, but you folks have me curious and I'm going to start a new topic in a minute. What about bakeries and markets in Sonoma? ← See post number 5 for what we have. Novato and Petaluma are not real representative of Sonoma the City or the County. Petaluma has some fine resturants and a good brew pub. Novato has Target, Costco, Chevys and Ihop. Napa destroyed it's downtown with urban renewal and is slowly coming back. Paying for wine tasting is common in the Napa Valley, not so in Sonoma County. We have much more diversity in wine styles and regions. We have the ocean. I go to Napa frequently and I never regret coming back Home.
  10. Dress for dining? Being from Northern California what is the usual dress for dining in New Orleans? Will a polo shirt and dockers be acceptable? Jeans?
  11. Local joke. "Sonoma make's wine, Napa makes auto parts." My bad, see Sonoma first.
  12. Tues night market in Sonoma is April-October. Friday morning market is not worth going to except in the summer. Saturday morning Market at the Veterans Building in Santa Rosa accross from the Fairgrounds on Hwy 12 is a very good one year round.
  13. The town of Sonoma has Artisan Bakers, Basque Boulagerire for bread. Vella cheese and The Cheesemakers Daughter for cheese. The Wine Exchange for wine. Sonoma Market for everything. Cafe la Haye, Deuce, Sonoma Savers, The Girl & The Fig, Della Santinia, Rins Thai, Swiss Hotel for restaurants. And Petanque courts to eat drink and play games. We also have a town square with a tuesday night Farmers Market.

    Confit Duck

As long I live, I'll remember a piece of advice given to me when I visited very, VERY rural upstate NY in the fall. "Allan, if you go out walking, try to look as little like game as possible". no comment. :) ← I can relate by personal experience. I have a large scar where my left thigh meets my hip where I was shot while deer hunting when I was 16. We were on private land, and there should have been no other hunters around. Fortunately the shot came from a great distance as it was a 30:30 slug and didn't do any serious damage. Actually the doctor who removed it did more damage than the shot itself. Another fortunate thing was that it was near zero (Wisconsin) and I didn't bleed much initially. I was wearing bright orange!!! ← Andie, you forgot to shout "I! Am! Not! A! Dear!!! I! Am! Not! Venison! I Am A Human Being!!!!!" Might have worked... ← Which is why cows have the word cow painted on them during deer season.
  15. Tomato surprise. Basically a homemade version of Skillet Lasagna. We bought the ground beef from a small market on the way to Yosemite in March. Eat dinner, drink the rest of the wine, and so to bed as it starts to snow. We are in a tent sleeping on the ground. Minor stomach discomfort, worse, worse, where the hell is the bathroom? 50 yards in a snowstorm out of a sleeping bag. Repeat 4 times that night. Since then I've always been real careful about were I buy my meat. It also affected my tent mate the same way. Now
  16. You may need a thicker wall. Standard stud is 3 1/2", 2- 1 3/8" thick doors is 2 3/4", Add room for clearence and framing, I'm thinking a 2x6 stud sized wall. Keep doing your homework and it will all work out.
  17. You might try Bifold doors as they take up less space than a regular door.
  18. Good tip, winesonoma. Pocket doors are indeed an elegant solution to some problems. My sister's house has two that are starting to act up. Well . . . they are about 30 years old and the works may have been replaced before. Replacing with conventional doors is not a good option. Where were you able to find those wheels? She has a good craftsman that she can call on to install. ← I used to get mine from a commercial hardware supplier in San Francisco. You want the kind that say 100-300lb doors.
  19. When I worked for the Golden Gate Bridge I made up my own pocket doors. Get captive wheels 4 per hanger. with track about $100.00. They will last forever. I had some out on the Bridge for 10 years with no problem. Quite possibly one of the harshest environments in the world. Yes that's what some of those little shacks have. Known as Painter Condos.

    Injecting food?

Vodka or Gin mixed with tabasco and wostershire injected into cherry tomatoes. Little explosive Bloody Mary's. ←
  21. Sponge Bob get's swiped from Burger King. http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee.../printstory.jsp

  23. How long did one knife take with the Edge-Pro? How much would you have to charge per knife to make money with it? Pro's use grinders which are fast quick and easy. But never as good as the EdgePro. I have one and love it.
  24. Dat's a lotta sauce. ← Hehehe, yeah I know, but that was the size recommended by the book, for brown stock which will eventually reduce down to 20 cups o' demi to whack in the freezer. Still, I know what you mean... Though with 26 small sauces for brown demi in the book, I will go through it all! Pat ← Keep us posted, My GF has the book.
  25. I'm thinking of meeting my GF in New Orleans on a Sat through Wed. What kind of days open exists there. I know that Monday is a traditional day for restaurants to be closed, but what about Sunday? Any ideas appreciated.
