    Dinner! 2004

Last night: Jerk chicken, mango, cole slaw and sweet potato "fries". Served with beer and a really yummy pinot noir I didn't see the name of.

    Prep Question~

Sometimes you really NEED to wash a chicken. The other day the SO put the chicken on the counter and "popped out for a minute". I got home shortly thereafter. The dog greeted me at the door with the chicken in his mouth. I stood there LMAO. Washed chicken, cooked it, and served it to his highness for dinner.
  4. Looking forward to the blog! Are their any meals that tend to be staples in your home, or favourites that you always turn to in a rush?

    Maple syrup...

Quebec Maple Syrup mmmmmm! Especially used as a marinade and glaze for thick cut grilled pork chops. Mixed with horseradish, dijon and fresh thyme. I think I know what's for dinner tonight.
  6. First welcome to the India forum and I am so delighted you are here. Second.. I am looking for a victim . I am designing a 21 day course in Indian cooking and am looking for someone to pilot it with.. would you be interested? We could do it in a private forum and then post the results.... just a thought up for it? If you need more than 1 "victim" please let me know. I have one Indian cookbook, given to me by a friend, written by her mother of their family recipes. I have tried a few, but many of the recipes have been changed for ease of ingredients, or for the North American palate. Although I cook all kinds of different foods I have never done any Indian, even though we eat it at least once or twice a week out. I admit to lurking and drooling frequently on the Indian board!
  7. Ginger ale was used as ginger traditionally soothes an upset stomach. As for flat, my grandmother always believed it was easier on the stomach without the bubbles. Personally, I'd rather have the carbonation when ill.
  8. Whichever one your stomach will feel most up to eating. Linguine, perhaps? Hope you feel better soon, great blog!

    Dinner! 2004

Homemade (by someone else) ricotta filled ravioli in a thyme/butter/white wine/ch. broth sauce with some fresh peas. Yummy. Accompanied by a bottle of Villa Sandi Pinot Grigio (cheap & cheerful @ about $11 a bottle).

    Carnitas

Try Jaymes' recipe! Then you can enjoy them at home.
  11. Poached egg on toast Grilled cheese Crumpets with honey Hot, sweet tea I still crave all of the above when I'm not feeling well, but able to eat something.
  12. The octopus recipe sounds wonderful! I will certainly try this soon, thank you. And thank you for your wonderful blogs. I follow them with great enjoyment and the photos are exceptional.
  13. Pimms on the deck.

    Dinner! 2004

Oooooh, now I know who's brain to pick in the fall! My parents have a place in St. Pete and we're always looking for good food choices when we go down to visit. They're pretty good at being adventurous with us, but let's just say that some of their restaurant picks have left us somewhat nonplussed.
  15. Please, please keep saying it. Maybe things will change eventually. It is not the least bit uncommon for female business travellers to eat out alone anymore, yet we are so often treated poorly. I used to travel quite a bit for business, and had a very comfortable expense account. I quite often went to a recommended restaurant when travelling on my own to decide if it were somewhere I would want to take clients or colleagues. I NEVER returned to any of the ones where I was treated as a second class customer because I was alone. It was suggested to me by more than one maitre d' that perhaps I would be "more comfortable" eating in/at the bar! Yeah, okay, who would be more comfortable?
  16. What, no coffee??? Looking forward to the blog.

    Dinner! 2004

Belated Father's Day dinner up at the lake for my parents and aunt and uncle: Composed salad of mixed greens out of dad's garden, red onion, baby grape tomatos, cambozola and toasted pine nuts Mushroom risotto (cremini, porcini, chaterelles, shitake) Pan seared duck breast with a sour cherry sauce, asparagus Homemade red currant pie (mom's contribution!)
  18. Beautiful photos! I think perhaps this will be the best advertising ever...you'll have eG members making reservations in droves!
  19. Post it all!!! Great stuff and the gory details. We have to live vicariously through you.
  20. Elie - Cumin!! The missing ingredient I believe! Thanks very much. Don't worry about amounts, to taste is the only way to go. If I may pick your brain a bit more, do you have any thoughts on the different brands of tahini? Are there any differences? thank you.
  21. Elie, Came across this thread and had to read as I love Middle Eastern food. Made the fatteh, it was fantastic, thank you. My cousin's husband's mother (got that?) is Palestinian and a wonderful cook, and was my introduction to real middle eastern cooking. I would love your recipe for Babba Ghanooj as I have never been able to successfully duplicate hers from memory and the commercial ones are just awful.

    Carnitas

WOW!!! Finally got time to make Jaymes' carnitas. Followed her directions to the letter.....(hey, it worked for her salsas and soup).....OMG are they fantastic!! Still nibbling on the crispy bits from the pan. Jaymes is the goddess of Mexican cuisine for eG.......and right now my hero! The SO thinks I'm the greatest. After we finished eating from the pan and burning our fingers, we put them in some corn tortillas with Jaymes salsa, avocado, cilantro and jalapenos. I think it's safe to say, Mexican food will be on the menu a lot in the near future. Thanks, Jaymes!
  23. I've heard of throwing Christian's to the lions, but roasting them??? What are you thinking hathor? I vote for #2
  24. What a wonderful essay, thank you so much for sharing. (Yeah, I know everyone keeps saying that, but we all mean it.) Family recipes are so precious. Various ancestors of mine put together a church cookbook with Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery that was recently republished for all us young'uns. It's wonderful to look back at the 80 to 100 year old recipes, even though you'd never want to make most of these!!! I really think you should get your mother's permission to publish a special eGullet edition!
  25. Soooooo.......HOW DID IT END?????? (Yeah, even if it was a long time ago, still curious!)
