  1. Those interested in fruit wine might also like to check out Forbidden Fruit near Cawston. They make an interesting asian pear dessert wine.
  2. Go to Lombardo's across the street in the Mercato mall. Same pizza (Marcellos guy and Lombardo's woman used to be married- they split up and she kept Lombardos). Cheaper, good service. It is in the mall, so not as pretty as Marcellos. We get take out often.

    garlic problems

Thanks. Got eGullet trigger happy because it really was toilet cleaner blue! I will just keep cooking and hope I can avoid a blue cauliflower puree. Since I am serving with veal, maybe the color is a good thing actually ← Yes- it is a pretty scary colour.

    garlic problems

Don't worry about it. Garlic contains a compound to react with acids (here, the lemon) to produce a greenish blue colour. You will see the same thing in pickled garlic too. It won't taste different or hurt you. ETA Compound - anthocyanins
  5. I was speaking to the last part of his statement, where he asks if we are arbitrators for fair labour practice. Obviously, everybody draws the line and a different place, and I am not suggesting that everybody will or should have equal vigilance when it comes to how they make these decisions. As for the exploitive nature of capitalism- that is a story for another thread. Fortunately, I live in Canada and therefore do not have to make the decision between unfettered capitalism and communism. Only Sith Lords deal in absolutes I have not seen anything about Susur being called up for breaking minimum wage laws- if he has, that might influence my decison to go there. It depends, as others have said, on whether we are talking about stagieres or what.
  6. Are you suggesting that consumers should never consult their own ethics when considering where to spend their money??
  7. My brother recently had his rehearsal dinner at Cru, and it was universally regarded as fantastic- in fact it sort of outshone the food at the wedding. The value was very good. You would be looking at a buy out at that number- but they will definitely create something nice for you. We had a choice in each course, so you could have options for both the adventurous and the timid. It was cosy and intimate, and just right for us. They could accomodate 40, though you would take up the whole spaec. Aurora would be another option- it would also be a buy out. They were looking into that as an option, but were a little concerned about the auditory factor with older guests. I have never thought the room particularly noisy myself. Both these restaurants are very focussed on regional ingredients and are very well priced. Aurora has a BC only wine menu as well.
  8. I have bought pineapple mint plants all over the place- I think even Home Depot will have it.
  9. Hmmm. Thinking on the potlucks at the office, there is pretty much guaranteed to be: Chow Mein Spinach salad with mandarin segments Pasta Salad with tastless dressing and a few specs of carrot and bell pepper A hollowed out sourdough with spinach dip Sushi someone bought at the mall. In the community events- Chile, teryaki wings, green salads (rarely iceberg), salad made from broken up ramen noodles. Can't think of much else.
  10. pandowdy (stewed, but with a crumbly topping)." ← Pandowdy can also be a pie crust top that is cut into the filling after its baked
  11. Cafe in the Woods are a series of small, intimate concerts held at the cross country ski clubhouse during the late fall and winter. Artists and bands come and play to a group of about 40 people. European style desserts and coffee are served. The audience is often heavily weighted with musicians and they frequently end up jamming with the band at the end of the evening. It is a great night out, and the price is right. Where in S. Ontario is your husband from? ← We will have to try to attend one of those next time we are back. My husband is from London/St. Thomas. I love the area.
  12. But then why would it be cheaper in Italy?
  13. Surely we still have Bacardi Breezers in Canada? I am pretty sure there was a woman demo-ing some new flavour in the LDB the other day.
  14. Hmm, Certainly pasta sauce, salad dressing and ice cream ( I got an icecream maker recently).
  15. You would think, Although Peanut Butter as a product is not competing with the Corn/Soy/Canola juggernaut... Its a conspiracy
  16. I am not sure why it would be more expensive here, but I do know that there has been a decrease in production in most edible oils- an exception being soy. I would also guess that soybean and corn production is huge in the US, and packs some economic lobbying punch if the HFCS stranglehold on the processed foods mkt is any indication. There may be some subsidies of corn/soy/canola as a result too making peanut oil able to compete price wise. Also, the above three crops are GMO modified, which may makes it more efficient production wise. Of course, GMO's are a whole other can of worms.
  17. Hi Kerry, Tell us about Cafe in the Woods! My husband is from S. Ontario, and we keep meaning to visit Mantoulin. You have given extra motivation. Looks beautiful.
  18. Ah, cut up. I was picturing you swallowing a whole octopus- though looks like that has been done as well.
  19. Hardly, what? I'm saying I have no qualms about eating octopus. You're entitled to your own opinion, I'm entitled to mine. I also have no qualms about eating cow, sheep and horse. If you'd like to argue animal/seafood politics, feel free to create a thread in the General Topics forum. The topic has been debated ad nauseum in other threads. Until then, this is a thread about the availability of live raw baby octopus and whether it is served in Vancouver. ← Hardly the same as eating live shrimp (which I have done by the way). See above.
  20. Hey, a chacun son gout- I am just saying that the Octopus is quite an intelligent animal. A shrimp is not.
