I personally don't like sweet brisket recipes, but that's my own hang up. I would do it the day before too, brisket reheated always tastes better. Also, throw in an extra onion or two, they are the best part. By the way, there is a reason we drink 5 cups of wine throughout the meal. Be prepared for a long, but sometimes fun, meal. Make sure the wine isn't Manashevitz though

I second Busboy's suggestions. Get down to the blossoms early unless you want to be surrounded by the swarms of other touristas (not that we aren't glad to have you). Last weekend it was as if the locust came early and all landed at the Tidal basin. Same goes for the zoo, if you are shlepping up there. Friday nights the Smithsonian has a free jazz concert at the Natural History Museum. They serve food too, but it's not worth it. It's a shame we aren't in Code Orange and we can't send you to see the rocket launchers

Yeah, but just barely. Look, more of the last of my twenties just flew by....... Am I the baby of the group?

I think the idea (with Tunnicliffs anyway) is the location, not the food.

Greetings from the teacher's lounge! Let's see, me hmmmmm. I have spent most of my life in DC, mainly on Capitol Hill. There is a bit more about me in my bio but rereading it I realized it doesn't say much about my life. I started undergrad at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. and finished up at American. Now I am working on my masters at Trinity College in DC. Food is my passion, my hobby, my enemy and my love. I have been a food snob my entire life, which I blame on my food snob parents My other passion is my students. I teach at a Level 5 (most restrictive) private special ed. school in Rockville, but most of my students are "inner city" kids. Feel free to shut me up tonight if I go on about them! In my blog I wrote about introducing my kids to sushi and other Japanese food. Eunny, we are studying Korea next so I can't wait to meet you! I need lesson ideas Today I am in a read turtleneck, although I may have to change if I get covered in any more drool (a daily part of my life). My kids all wanted to know why I was "dressed up" today and think I have a date. They are very concerned that I am not married and don't have a boyfriend Since spring break officially starts in 52 1/2 hours (but who is counting) I have decided that tonight is my unofficial start. John W. has already passed on some wine recommendations. Is anyone coming from upper NW? I would love to share a cab or a ride if you are interested. PM me if you are interested.

Depending on how willing to walk your family is, and the weather, about a mile from the cherry blossoms is the Maine Ave. Wharf. It is an outdoor fish market where you can also pick up cooked seafood to go. Freshly shucked oysters and clams, steamed shrimp, chowder, crab cakes, etc. You would probably want to walk down, pick up the food and then head back to the blossoms. If you are interested PM me and I will give you better directions. Zatinya does accept reservations, but only until 6 or 6:30. In Dupont and Penn Quarter there is Teasim, which is a local tea house chain. Good for breakfast or lunch. Ben's chilli bowl is great, but not necessarily on the toursits path. Only go if GF's mother is willing to go to a dive. If she is, it is definately worth it. For brunch you might want to hop on the metro and head down to Eastern Market Saturday. It's about a mile or so from the Capital, Supreme Court, Library of Congress. Good, cheap brunch and lots of vendors selling jewlery, art and the like. Just the kind of place a 16 year old likes to spend money.

He had guests on his show? My memory is vague on that one. It seemed his show was in syndication on most cable channels such as Discovery or TBS Superstation or WLIW (21) here in NYC....as recently as 1998. Now, it's like he's virtually disappeared. Soba There was a holiday episode with Elmo that now is mildly ironic. He also had various children on for other holiday shows. Oy Vey

Really? We've never been, but I thought it was a local red tablecloth place. It's a local cafeteria style chain. They have 6 locations, including one near my office. I've been a couple of times-- nothing to get excited about really, but not bad. Mamma Lucia The one in Bethesda is tiny, but a sit down place. The pizza is pretty damn good for this area. The rest is just your average Italian.

Who knew Here in DC one of the few decent deli's started out as Toojay's, but wasn't a chain. And as for Dr. Brown's, it's supposed to be a creme soda

As an ex would say, you had world shrinkage!

I know it's pretty far from you, but I wonder if the cheese guy at Eastern Market has any? Or one of the other stands?
-
I know this a little off topic but..... PoorLawyer, is Toojay's run by the Krupin brothers? I heard one of them opened a deli down in Fla. Otherwise, what's the chance of 2 deli's with the same name? Oh yeah, I love eggcreams!

Last night I made Pasta Carbonara ala Hillvalley with a thin lasagna shapped pasta. It was delish. But while rendering the fat from the pancetta I learned that the batteries in my smoke dector work. I cooked the pancetta over a high heat (electric ). Does fat render at a lower heat? How can I avoid the smoke? Frankly the smoke didn't bother me, the apartment smelled great. But my neighbors probably weren't too happy.

How about the Friends Thanksgiving episode where Rachel makes a trifle with suated beef and onions? Or on the Cosby show when in a nightmare Cliff gave birth to a hoagie? Here here sister

I'm pretty sure his assistant in the later years was named Craig. "Hot pot, cold oil, food won't stick!"

They also do a decent job promoting local restaurants on most occasions. There is an episode revolving around a poker game where they got pastramie from Krupins, a local deli.

Oh wise rb correspondent, have you heard anything about Dish?

I had Urban last night. Great ribs and cornbread. Tried the carolina and red suace, both of which were great. I agree with Sietsma, the greens needed a bit more of vinegar, but otherwise were great. The hardest part was driving home and resisting the urge to eat on the road. All in all, it's good "redneck" BBQ with Rockville prices.

Literri's is worth the trip. Just the smell of the place is worth the drive. I will be eating well for the next week or so. I didn't have time to check out any of the other stores around there. What's worth it?
