  1. incidentally - with the risotto - i wound up stirring widdeshins - clockwise just wasn't an intuitive motion for a left-hander like me.
  2. I don't have any pix jackal - there was way too much going on this weekend, on top of the cooking, for me to be able to find a camera that worked. I apologize for that. In any case - You're risotto ranked quite high up there. I was unable to find korma masala, so i used a sambar masala instead. At first i thought it wasn't such a good idea as I got an overwhelming smell of asofoetida, but that sorted itself out as the rice got creamier and the coconut cream was added. it was very good and quite subtle. The pakora recipes were both good and i will gladly use them for other vegetable instead, but i personally found asparagus to be too bitter to make a good pakora. both of the asparagus and coconut recipes were good too. I really liked the sauce for whippy's recipe - it tasted very fresh. The curry powder I used for Jackal's recipe wound up being too overpowering with the turmeric - but i will blame that on the powder. Whippy's Coconut asparagus came in second place and Jackal's risotto came in 3rd. All the recipes were very good, and very easy to follow - however it was much like judging an Iron Chef Asparagus episode.
  3. i've never noticed the smell personally in my house, altho i've noticed it in other people's houses. i think the biggest smell contributor is turmeric tho.

  5. So after a weekend of slaving over fresh asparagus and a hot stove I have decided on a winner for our Asparagus contest. This was not jsut judged by my palate, but my Non-Indian roommate's palate as well. And the Winner is....... Milagai with the Asparagus and Carrot Paruppu Usilli!! Congratulations Milagai!
  6. I like making them in Dal. and then having the dal with rice with ghee and some mango pickle on top. barring that I like them pretty much every other way too.
  7. and here's a canning recipe: http://www.e-cookbooks.net/recipes/ir218.htm hey...who knew ketchup came from india? http://www.waitrose.com/food_drink/recipes...0208062-r04.asp
  8. here's an interesting recipe. http://www.kbapps.com/cookbook/ketchup.html
  9. Give it a shot, scott! I'm curious to see how your final recipe turns out.
  10. reduced fat peanut-butter. reduced-fat mayo. low-carb bread. (actually bought some at my fave grocery - it was house-made, and felt really soft. then i tried to eat a slice, and it had a taste and texture reminiscent of burnt mozzarella.)
  11. The tomato would most certainly be cooked down into a paste. But none of the other ingredients (corn syrup, vinegar, salt, onion powder, spices) have a raw taste when uncooked. mm - i'd have to disagree - at least ot my palate onion powder and garlic powder stick out like a sore thumb unless whatever they're in has been heated to meld flavors.
  12. Oh man, two things I couldnt disagree with more. Some of us have no choice but to use non-dairy creamer. And now that I am used to it, I actually LIKE the taste of Coffee-Mate. And as to ranch dressing -- just what the hell else do you expect me to eat my onion rings with? well after having some hangover coffee made with instant taster's choice, cremora, and sugar - i'll take back the non-dairy creamer comment. sorta. i'll say grocery-store brand non-dairy creamer. as for your onion rings. use ketchup, like i do. i think my main problem with ranch dressing is the buttermilk. as much as i've tried i really don't like the smell of buttermilk. it smells like trumpet-spit. strangely enough i like blue-cheese dressing. which smells like particularly strong trumpet-spit. but it's got blue cheese in it, and that's what makes it better.
  13. after watching The Hot Chick this weekend - i sort of understand where you males are coming form as far as bathroom attendants go.
  14. i know when i pass i wouldn't mind being buried wearing glitter and a feather boa.
  15. i'm guessing ketchup is cooked. it certainly doesn't have a raw taste to it.
  16. i'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned: high fructose corn syrup. ranch dressing is definitely bad. non-dairy creamer.
  17. ok. toasted first off i have to give you my condolences. i don't know what i'm going to do when mine eventually pass. still the idea of a dead cat dressed in a feather boa and glitter being passed around by a bunch of kids at a party strikes me as hilarious.
  18. Phaelon - i've neve rheard of watapula, and at least in my era i don't recall this party/practice whatever. i have had the punch before tho. it was a fixture at frat parties when i was in school. that was downstate on the island tho.
  19. my mom and i talked about sex once. it was a wholly inappropriate discussion and it's tarnished my views in ways i can't begin to imagine. but that's a perosnal thing. i've had no problem discussing sex with other people's moms tho. with their kids present of course.
  20. it's not a good place to discuss vomiting and diarrhea imo.
  21. i think y'all got them all.
  22. http://www.browntownonline.com/wj_bollymovie.html http://www.browntownonline.com/wj_bollyrules.html whish i'd seen these earlier. altho it appears we did cover many of the major points.
  23. Garam masala, red chilies and dried mango powder. hmm..i'll have to try that. i normally fry them like bhelpuri with turmeric chili and salt, no onions tho.
