Today was a salad day if there ever was one. Come lunchtime my only top of mind choice for a luncheon salad was The Palm. They do great salads.

Instead I decided to explore about. I won't name the place but I had the absolute worst salad ever - sounded good - shrimp and calamari over mixed greens. But the calamari was breaded and deep fat fried. As soon as it hit the cold greens it turned the whole mess greasy and wilted.

My quest is for a cool, crisp refreshing luncheon salad. Some protein, hopefully available in mid afternoon. Center Cityish. The aforementioned Yann's lobster salad sounds perfect. And probably more than a salad from one of those lunch soup and salad places. Table service and great iced tea.

Apamate comes to mind. Where else?

Holly, you know I'm always happy to see your smiling face on the other side of the bar at Amada. There are four salads on the lunch menu, all of which are delicious and substantial enough to call a full lunch. The most generous is the Chicken a la Plancha salad which is a full leaf romaine caesar style salad with some artichoke hearts and a whole grilled chicken breast fanned on it. The Tuna Salad is a pile of mixed greens with three slices of toasted baguette with tomato spread and good Ventresca tuna on top. There's also a Serrano Ham and Fig salad and an Ensalada Verde which is all of Chef Jose's favorite green things including haricot vert, asparagus, avocado cubes, etc. The Verde can be ordered with beef or shrimp on top for a small upcharge. They're all good.

For $12.50 you can have the Catalan Express lunch which includes a soup (either Gazpacho or Caldo Gallego) and any of these salads or your choice of one of four sandwiches instead. It also includes a non-alcoholic beverage. It's a sweet deal.

Katie's always one to promote Amada , but she has every right to do so. Amada is a great restaurant. I'm not a big salad person, but with a little arm-twisting from Katie, I had the Chicken a la Plancha, and it was outstanding. My thoughts (without pictures, I’m afraid) on the Amada thread. Mmm…I was just thinking when my boss will be away again so I can take another long lunch.

This is why I'm (belatedly) mourning Yann... their lunches were perfect for hot, muggy days.

I like Good Dog's salads -- especially the grilled calamari (with oranges, fennel, and an orange/tomato/dill vinagrette).

Sansom St. Oyster House and Amada - sort of like the ghost of Katie past and the ghost of Katie present. Both good ideas.

I headed to the ghost of Katie past pluperfect today, Rouge. Had a wonderful salad/ cold plate - cold large scallops that had been seared with pernod, fresh anchovies, white asparagus, greens and one of their fantastic rolls for sopping. That's what I'm talking about.

 I've really been in this town too long, haven't I?

That Rouge salad sounds scrumptious. Executive Chef Matt Zagorsky at Rouge is very talented and is a heck of great guy to boot. Fresh anchovies, Pernod-seared scallops and white asparagus?!? Ya mon. That is one serious summer salad.
