Beginning of January I will be taking a friend to Paris. As she is writing a dissertation on Basque films, I'm sure she would enjoy dining in an authentic Basque restaurant. Any suggestions?

Modern, bistro - Ami Jean

L'Ourcine, about which much has been written last year here, types itself as Basque as well. One to avoid - Les Fernandises - not yet in the guidebooks anyway.

L'Ourcine is marginally Basque. Modern cuisine inspired by the wider 'Sud-Ouest', rather. L'Ami Jean or Au Bascou are much more like the real thing (as much as the real thing can be found north of the Spanish-French border).

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I agree Vserna, I did not associate L’Ourcine with Basque cuisine either. We ate there twice; fantastic the first time (2004), not up to standards the second time (last May). L’Ami Jean I tried as well and really liked it. We will go to Au Bascou this time and let you know.

i forgot the name of the restaurant...i think it's near my hotel in the 13e, there are some Spanish places nearby as well. a tiny place with great atmosphere, nice food, only locals, communal tables.

Helen Darroze(sp) is expensive & not necessarily well received but you may wish to consider it. Also i would recommend picking up some Christian Parra specialties, i know La Rosa in St Germain stocks his & number of other Spanish goodies; in fact you can enjoy them in store with some good Spanish/SW wines. Oh i really liked a restaurant called Fogon(Spanish-not Basque) left bank opposite that hunchback place.
