The Great Beer Hunt

The Cap has been popped; high alcohol beer is legal to sell now. Where have you seen it?

To capture some great publicity, Brawley's in Charlotte sold a Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout this AM at 7:30. That might be the first big beer sold in the state under the new law.

The story there is really about the guy who bought it. He's the one that needs to be interviewed.

He's a regular of customer of Brawley's, one of the many beer collectors around here. Just fyi, Mike Brawley says he'll probably ration what he has available for the first few weeks. Although a few places started lining up supply in advance, distributors expect it to take about a month before they have regular stocks of the new stuff.

The beers also have to get label approval, although apparently, retailers will be able to offer them anyway. If the label gets blocked, they'll have to take the beer off the shelf, but they can sell it until then. However, since most of the beers have been sold in other states, no one expects a problem.

Ace Reporter Kathleen "Scoop" Purvis is way ahead of the pack on this hot story.

I should have known.

Heck, hon -- I just did a phone interview with the Loco Pops woman in Durham, too. (Yes, she'll stay open in winter. She's planning special winter flavors.)

And I won't mention the bottle of Saison DuPont that's sitting on my desk right now. Research never stops.

Take that bottle of Saison DuPont over to your favorite Thai restaurant and uncork it with your dinner. The fruity spice complexity of a Saison would go great with a curry or a Pad Thai.

It also went quite nicely with the scallop and corn burgers I made Saturday night. You think we get all this information from a single tasting?

I'm happy to report the following,

Tyler's Taproom at the American Tobacco Campus has Chimay Triple (White) on tap.

Whole Food Durham has all three Chimay (Red, White, and Blue) in 11.something sized bottles.

I'm looking forward to a trip to the Blue Light soon to see what they have.
