Hi, my mother just moved to Maida Vale and I'm wondering if there's a bakery or somewhere to get good pastries and bread. She used to live near Villandry, which had the best food around. Is there anywhere in Maida Vale that comes close?

George - welcome to eGullet!

Maida Vale has some interesting food around. There was a thread on Maida Vale where you might find some ideas.

She'll probably enjoy the Clifton Road end - and Formosa Street also is good for browsing.

Not sure if this is too far for her to walk, but the main drags of St John's Wood - Circus Road and St Johns Wood High Street - have much better options than Maida Vale proper. Panzer's Deli has decent baked goods, and there's a Maison Blanc (IMHO the only decent 'chain' patisserie in London) and an outpost of the mini-chain The Bread Shop. Lesser quality but still good option is Richoux, also on Circus Road.

avoid the cakeshop on shirland road.

raoul's deli at the top of clifton road is good. best bet is baker and spice though, as gavin suggested.

bumping this up to say there is now a Baker & Spice in Maida Vale itself. On the corner of Clifton Road and Lanark Road.
