Heritage India

Recommended Posts

Of all the Indian restaurants I've eaten at in the DC/VA, the food at Heritage ranked in the top 2, along with Minerva.

IMHO it should be a sin to even mention these two restaurants together.

For those of us who have missed one or the other, why?

Minerva is vegetarian only, right?

Heritage & Indique are on top of the pyramid, serving very good food in a wonderful ambience and charging for it.

Minerva on the other hand serves average quality at popular prices.

They are simply in differrent categories. Minerva is not vegetarian though.

Sure but Monica, what do we think about Heritage India vis-a-vis Indique? About Bombay Polo Club? About Woodands or Udupi Palace as comparred to these more-global places?

The southern Indian places stand alone on a tangent, I think, but that still doesn't reconcile Heritage vs. Indique, not that there needs to be a "contest." Personally, I'd prefer to have narrative descriptions of each without the need to assign stars or point scores.

That's more natural and consistent with reality, no?

I did not realize this was addressed to me. Sorry. I think Heritage India and Indique are very different and equally good in their own right. Indiques flavors are true to the hard core south Indian style of cooking seafood. Heritage India is traditional food and very good.

I really like Woodlands. Did not like the food at Udipi on the two occasions I tried it.

I dont thinks scores or stars are needed. These restaurants are all very different in what they are offering.

Call me old school, but in certain moods I prefer the extraordinary graciousness of dining at the Bombay Club near the White House. I think the food is nearly as good as Heritage and as good as Indique, the martinis are stupendous (made with Bombay gin, of course) and both the room and the service elegant and relaxing. And on a temperate evening, it is the only one of the three restaurants to offer outdoor seating.

I'm on the pavement

Thinking about the government.

I agree about the service at Bombay Club, none better, though I am not sure about their food being at par with Heritage and Indique.

Heritage prepares traditional recipes, while Indique does some 'fusion' takes with great emphasis on presentation but none tones the food down to the extent that Bombay Club does.

That said they each have their own niche and are very good places

I'm not sure what happened here, but I did not write this post. Perhaps I was posting in my sleep or something.

My wife and I ate at Heritage India last night. I originally wanted to eat at Indique, but alas, no reservations available. Not that Heritage is any less favorable, but I really wanted to try Indique again. I hate that Indique is by the Uptown, because it is always soooo crowded. Guess I need to try planning ahead next time. I think I might try going there for lunch today.

Heritage was wonderful as usual. I got the Lamb Korma which was probably the best I have ever had. My wife got the saag paneer and was not terribly impressed though. She prefers the saag paneer at Haandi. It might just be a matter of her taste though. Her comment was that it was too creamy and that the cheese was not firm enough. I also still can't get over the fact that Heritage charges you for rice, but the extra cost is worth it for the wonderful food. We'll definitely be going back, despite my wifes bad experience with the saag paneer.

As a lover of Indian food, I am ashamed of the fact that I have not yet been to Bombay Club. I will have to try it.

  • 1 month later...

My colleagues and I just returned from another wonderful meal at Heritage India on Wisconsin. That place is not to be missed and the lunch special is a deal.

Soup: Muli Gantani: Lemon and lentil soup, just to tickle the pallet

Main course: Goa Fish Curry for me. A yellow-based curry with serious heat filled with chunks of nicely (not over) cooked grouper. Accompanied by rice, Dal and an eggplant dish that is a bit sour with a nice tamarin (sp?) flavor.

On the side: Nan and garlic Nan

Dessert: Rice, pistachio and grape pudding.

$13.50 apeice, a good deal for a fully satisfied stomach
