Muesli/Müsli

Sometimes on busy days or when quick meals are needed, I would dunk muesli from a pack into a mug, top it up with some cold cold milk, and have it like a cereal.

 

But then I sold the idea to someone else. And they said it tasted like cardboard.

 

So hold on a minute, is this the wrong way to eat muesli or what?

I've seen folks eat it in that manner.  That doesn't mean it's right or wrong, but it certainly seems to be common.  A lady friend from Colombia enjoyed a version of muesli in that fashion, and Sweetie, who was from Argentina, would enjoy flaked oatmeal in a glass and just pour milk over the cold, uncooked flakes and let 'em soak a bit. Lucia, a friend from Peru, would do likewise.  Of course, seeing them eat it that way, I had to try it for myself.  A nice muesli with fruit and perhaps some sweetener lends itself very well to that technique.  I'm sure that if you searched the 'net you'd find that to be not only common, but a preferred way of eating it.

This muesli comes with a mix of dried fruit and nuts, depending on the brand you're going for, and the assorted mix of fruit/nut the taste changes.

 

It's obviously not the "wrong" way to eat muesli I guess, it's so subjective; but the common way I've noticed how people have oatmeal here is with making it into a porridge.

 

And with muesli, it's the oatmeal included in the mix, but it's just eaten raw.

 

Maybe adding a tad of salt could enhance the flavour next time for someone who says it's like cardboard *smiles.

I enjoy muesli but the grains themselves can be bland, you're right that much of the flavor comes from the dried fruits/nuts. I prefer to let it soak in unsweetened vanilla almond milk (optimally for an hour) so that the oats soften a bit, plus the slight vanilla flavor is nice.

Oh wow.. This is definitely something to try! Soak in unsweetened flavoured milk... Superb. You know what I think this is something I'm going to definitely try with some vanilla extract and fresh milk.

Quark...! Hmm interesting. I had to search what it was. But an interesting choice! Muesli with cheese is definitely something to try.

I've always soaked muesli in cold milk over night so it swells and thickens. then top with fresh berries or honey

 

I went looking for a basic recipe and many look overly complicated, I've never done it with yogurt but this one looks good

I mix it with a splash of milk, another splash of Naked Mighty Mango or Strawberry Banana smoothie, a cup of yogurt and a few berries. Much more flavorful this way
