I am currently testing some new dishes for a culinary school final project and am looking to purchase some high end more modern pieces of china. I am particularly looking for a small bowl surrounded by a large flat rim, a bowl/plate hybrid of sorts. Does anyone know of a good source to find nice china online or in the NYC area? Thanks!

Quite a few of the restaurant supply stores have nice selections of china that you can see and hold. I've seen just the items you're looking for.

There's a big one on the northwest corner of E. Houston St. and Bowery, one on Delancey and Forsythe (ne corner), WIN Restaurant Supply at 318 Lafayette, just north of Houston, one on the corner of Allen and Canal (nw) and others along E. Broadway and lower Bowery.

It sounds as if you are looking for what are called "rim soups," a classic old china shape, or more modernly, pasta bowls. Rim soup bowls are not cheap; I like to pick them up at thrift stores and other places that sell old china.
