The website posted by bobsdf reminded me of a great time we had at Bar du Caveau a couple years ago. When we arrived in Paris, our hotel room wasn't ready and we went there for lunch. We sat outside, on the peaceful square, and had a very nice lunch and a couple glasses of wine. I'm not sure I would like sitting inside as much, but outside it was a very nice experience I would recommend to anyone.

L'Angevin, 168, rue Montmartre (Tel: 01 42 36 20 20) is what comes to my mind. But it will be rather in the same style as Juvenile's, only larger.

Ptipois, l'Angevin has closed something like 900 years ago! :biggrin: Now it's some kind of an international french-american-canadian-whatever club-restaurant-bar: I think it's called SoMo, like South of Montmartre.

But Freckles, if you're still looking for something in the 2nd, I'd try the Mesturet, definitely: it's nothing more than a neighbourhood café and bistrot, but with some cool food (charctueries, especially). The place is quite big, so you guys won't be packed (and no one will yell -- I've never heard of something like that waiter at the Juveniles. Guess the boss, Tim, wasn't there, right?)

But didn't I see something posing as a large, yuppie-style wine bar last week or so, in the lower part of rue du Faubourg-Montmartre? Sort of not quite facing the "Palace" but almost.

There is definitely a wine bar there but I didn't remember the name and thus I assumed it was L'Angevin. Do you know about this place? It is painted in beige and wine red colors and looks rather new.

I've seen this place again last night (before going to dine somewhere else :smile: ). It is definitely facing the Palace, is a wine bar of sorts, is named "Le Zinc des Cavistes" and, as far as I've seen, looks like nothing to write home about.

I entered the place before dinner time, just to ask for a card. It all looked so gimmicky. No smell coming from the kitchen whatsoever. The wines on the chalkboards didn't look tremendously interesting either, and the menu was sort of dull.

Wow. Thank for all these terrific thoughts. My friend (and co-founder of the now-monthly wine bar outings club) has picked a place in the 2nd where we'll head on the 26th of April. Will be sure to get back to you with reviews then and also, bien sur, a request for thoughts about where in the 3rd I can go during the month of May.

Okay. As you know, I got a group of about 12 together to go to a wine bar in the 1st in March. Tonight, I'm heading with 9 friends to Au Sans Souci in the 2nd.

Now, I need to find somewhere to go in May in the 3rd Arrondisement. I think we'll be about 8 people -- I'd like somewhere that we can get some simple food and have a wide selection of wines by the glass. Atmosphere is more important than number of wines!

Please just throw all your suggestions my way. And I'll let you know in May where I end up going, and what it's like.

The two I've heard recommended (but not been there) are l'Estiminet du Marche + Le Barricou, both fairly new.

Well we are nearly thru May and still wondering which wine bar you went to in April and your choice for May.

As someone who enjoys the whole gammut of french wines I find this thread very helpful - just wish i could be doing it as well. :sad:

Hey. Wish you could join us, too, Paul!

It was my pal's turn to choose in April, for the Second Arr. She picked off a list of wine bars she found on a website. A place called "Sans Souci" It turned out to be on rue St. Denis, a street famed for its sex-clubs, porn shops, hookers, etc! We were the only ones in there. We all felt pretty grim for the first 20 minutes. But the owner was so thrilled to have us -- 8 relatively clean-cut, non-strung out types -- in there, that he joined us, talked to us all about his wines, and we ended up having a great time!

May was supposed to be the 3rd Arrondissement, but my co-organizer just learned that she is being transferred to South Africa in June. So, between my travel for work and her "I'm being transferred in 6 weeks time" schedule, we had to skip May.

We hope to make it to a wine bar in the 3rd in June... I'll definitely let you know.

Not a spot for great food or a large group. this is an experience in what a classic wine bar was, and is, in the truest sense. In busy times, locals take their glass of wine outside, to better enjoy the smoke free air or whatever. Paris must have been full of places like this in Hemmingway's time. Give it a try. JP

THANKS! We've already visited the 1st and are now onto looking for a place in the 3rd. But Le Rubis sounds terrific, especially in the summer. I'll be sure to go with friends sometime when the weather heats up. - Freckles

We have been frequenting Le Rubis for about 30 years or more, and I am sure it hasn't changed since the post war period.  Not a spot for great food or a large group. this is an experience in what a classic wine bar was, and is, in the truest sense.  In busy times, locals take their glass of wine outside, to better enjoy the smoke free air or whatever.  Paris must have been full of places like this in Hemmingway's time.  Give it a try.  JP

Hello. I have to pick a place in the 3rd within the next 12 hours. A wine bar. For a group of about 8 people. Somewhere we can have a glass or two of wine, and where a few of us might be able to eat.
