Checkerboard Cookie Recipe

I've been wanting to bake these for a while but don't want to make too many bad batches. Can anyone recommend a few that have worked for them? Cocoa brand recommendations would be handy too. Thanks in advance.

[Live It Up]

Maida Heatter's recipe is one of my favorite cookies ever. I think she actually does hers as pinwheels, but he checkerboard is a variation. I haven't made them since I was in highs chool, though. I know the recipe is in her newer cookie book, but I don't know which of her older out of print books it was originally from. Anyway, IIRC, she uses almond meal in hers which makes them special.
