  1. I'm partial to oven-roasted carrots with Olive Oil, Cumin and Garlic, salt & pepper. Use the same temp and time as Roasted Cauliflower (click).
  2. I find the best way to eat Peeps is to give them to someone else. Photos of the Root Beer Peeps must not do it justice...they look like something a cat left in the litterbox.
  3. No. My one give-in to modern times. My Aunt Mary, who raised my mom, would make buckets of home-made sauerkraut every week (she oversaw a family of 9 kids) so she always had some on hand ready to serve with the traditional pork roast. And Sunday was Aunt Mary's baking day when she would make all the bread they would eat during the rest of the week.
  4. When I was in college, I worked at a Hickory Farms in the local shopping mall. They carried Head Cheese. I knew what it was before I started working there. My mom's family, living in a small Kansas town, raised a yearly pig. She said her family ate everything but the "Oink"... the "everything" included head cheese. My mom said the one thing she would never eat again was blood sausage. The old axiom says if you watch how sausage is made, you'll never eat it again. For my mom that was the blood sausage. Her parents came to America from Bohemia. The national dish they used to eat as often as they could was pork roast and home-made sauerkraut which became my family's "national" dish. As a kid, I hated it. As an adult, I adore it. Fortunately, I learned from my mom how to make it before she passed. She would also make a "knock off" version using Country Pork Ribs instead of the pork roast. Still quite good.
  5. I read another article about this soda-Peeps cross being called "Peepsi".
  6. "Heinz Is Introducing Two New Mashup Condiments Called Sweet Ketchili And Buffaranch" Something for those who can't figure out how to mix two condiments together in their kitchens.
  7. Posting this here since it's Peeps-related: "Pepsi's newest flavor has Peeps in it" Just thinking about the overly sweet combination of Peeps and Pepsi sets my teeth on edge.
  8. From this morning's BookBub email: "The New Basics Cookbook" Kindle Edition $1.99US (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) Use the "Look Inside" feature and scroll down to see some recipes. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  9. Couldn't find a topic on Hostess, so I am putting this here: "Hostess Has New Key Lime-Flavored CupCakes That Will Surely Become A Summer Favorite" It's a Limited Edition cupcake. Also: "HOSTESS IS RELEASING LEMONADE STAND TWINKIES TO KICK OFF SUMMER TREATS" This could be either very good or could be a huge mistake.
  10. My niece and I use the same purchased dough for our Christmas cut-out cookies. We also add a little more flour to the dough to make them easier to roll out and not stick to the rolling pin. My mom, and now my niece, always added a couple of extra "secret" spices to the dough to make them taste even better...our family secret. We end up putting the first batch of cut-out cookies on the first cookie sheet pan and that gets put into the freezer while we cut out the cookies for the 2nd cookie sheet pan. Once we're done with the 2nd cookie sheet pan, the sheet pan in the freezer comes out and both get put into the oven at the same time. You could even put the 2nd sheet pan in the freezer, as well, before going into the oven. The cookies tend to keep their shapes better with the help of the brief stay in the freezer.
  11. It was a similar situation at the Walmart Grocery Store. "Why reduce the price just because the holiday has passed? They'll still buy it full-price". It wasn't priced as highly as yours at the Walmart and it turned out to be the worst piece of meat (tough as shoe leather!) I've ever purchased, at Walmart or elsewhere. Live and learn...
  12. In the United States, the eggs are washed, which washes away the protective coating, before selling the eggs in stores. If you're in the U.S., your egg needs to be refrigerated. edited to add: If you're saying you've taken the egg out of the refrigerator and it's still too cold after 2 hours, have you tried cracking the egg into a small bowl/dish and let that sit out? Two hours would be the food-safety maximum. But I would think the bowl would, through heat exchange, bring the temperature of the egg up to a useable degree.
  13. From this morning's BookBub email: "The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook, 2nd Edition: Recipes for the Best Pan in Your Kitchen" Kindle Edition $1.99US (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) Use the "Look Inside" feature and scroll down a little more than half the way to see the recipe listing from the first chapter. Then scroll further to see recipes. There is a downloadable recipe for Herbed Skillet Bread on this cookbook's Amazon info page. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  14. It's like people who move next door to an airport and then complain about the noise of the jets taking off. Uhm, you knew what you were moving next to...and now you're upset about the noise? I recall the issue and I think (not sure) the company had to install some sort of filter on their factory exhaust to help eliminate the complaints.

    Dinner 2021

I'm more of a horseradish man when it comes to my corned beef. Like a good mustard, it helps to cut through the richness of any fat in the corned beef. And it's oh-so-good.
  16. Some finds this afternoon: "Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home" Kindle Edition $1.99US (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) Use the "Look Inside" feature and scroll down to see lots of recipes. This has been previously posted in the past... Cooking for a large crowd? Say, something big like an eGullet Pig Pickin'? "Taming the Feast: Ben Ford's Field Guide to Adventurous Cooking" Kindle Edition $1.99US (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) Use the "Look Inside" feature to see the handwritten (I found difficult to read) list of recipes. "Mary Berry Cooks to Perfection" Kindle Edition $1.99US (eG-friendly Amazon.com link) The "Look Inside" feature is not active on this cookbook's Amazon info page. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  17. Why do Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo? It's not just American Mexicans who celebrate the day (and they don't really....the important day to celebrate for Mexican Americans is actually in September 16th which is Mexican Independence Day). As for St. Paddy's Day, it's a reason to drink alcohol and eat good food. Who needs an excuse? And why corned-beef, something Patrick almost certainly never ate? As for the corned beef...it's an American knock-off of something the Irish ate back in the old country. More here (click).

    Air Fryers

I think a shoehorn may be involved.
  19. I did not post this for the US Amazon because it has been posted here in the past (2018). It was recently on sale but is not currently on sale any longer. If it goes on sale in the US Amazon again, I will repost it for those who may have missed it previously.
  20. Everything old is new again: "Taco Bell is bringing back the Quesalupa" It will only be around for a limited time.
  21. Did you check it for limes?
  22. I thought I would revive this ancient discussion instead of starting a new one: "How Cookie Cutters Are Made" The URL for those who can't view the embedded video: https://youtu.be/k66fqXttgpE I thought it was interesting that they try to make and sell new cookie cutter shapes all of the time. I wonder how receptive they would be to make someone a custom cutter?

    Popeyes

@Kim Shook, this explains why the rice was taken off the menu at Popeye's: "4 Major Menu Changes You’ll See at Popeyes" Kim, I hope you have been able to try the Jambalaya since they dropped the Dirty Rice. As a side that no other fast food joint is offering/serving, I like it. I've tried their new fish sandwich and yes, it does look like the Chicken Sandwich. The thing they didn't consider is that the fish in the sandwich is a lot more moist than the chicken in the Chicken Sandwich. So if there's time to drive home before you can eat the Fish Sandwich, don't expect too much of a crunch. It's a nice fish sandwich, but crunchy it wasn't. I will stick with the Chicken Sandwich.

    Burger King

Y'all are preaching to the choir. In & Out fries are just terrible. Even if they offered them to me for free, I'd still debate taking them. The last time I bought a meal from Burger King I was taken aback when I tried their French fries. They were tasteless, dry potato sticks. It didn't help that I bought their knockoff of the Carl's Jr Western Bacon Cheeseburger that was just as disgusting as the fries. BK topped their knockoff burger with their faux onion rings which are reconstituted chopped onion-in-a-shape-of-a-ring. I should have bought some Jack in the Box onions rings (which totally rock now) and put them on top of the burger. I haven't been back to BK since.

    Burger King

In & Out Burger has had a 4x4 for a long time, though the Burger King burger would be a 4x2 since it only has 2 slices of cheese. Everything old is new again.
