  1. i agree with the ikea idea. i have a set of the generic wine glasses, and they've never failed me yet. they get tossed into the dishwasher all the time, and still haven't broken.

    Guacamole

avocado, lime, and salt. that's all that i'll put in my guac. i just like the pure taste of the avocado with the lime and salt. as for browning, i heard if you put the avocado pit in the dish with the guac, it keeps the guac from browning. has anyone tried this?
  3. this may be sacrilege, but i'm not that big a fan of the whole rolled oats in oatmeal cookies. so what i do is grind some of the oats in my blender for a finer texture, and incorporate them like that. i also keep some oats whole for texture, too. oh, and the recipe of choice is the quaker oats one. and if you're not fond of raisins, another alternative is dried cranberries.
  4. jook! or congee! however you want to say it! it might even make your bronchitis feel better.
  5. i bought the gala apple juice the last time i was there, too. it's definitely some of the best apple juice i've ever had. much better than the sour mott's my mom fed us as children.
  6. insanely easy pasta dish: browned butter, mizithra cheese, and pasta. that's it.
  7. in the past, my mom has made a salad with some lettuce, lots of cucumber, and cold jellyfish. the dressing tasted vinegary, so i'm assuming it's some kind of vinaigrette.
  8. my standard is the rainbow roll. nigiri-wise, my absolute favorite is a long, beautiful slice of salmon. there's a sushi place nearby that serves sushi on an ice-covered plate with a film of plastic wrap covering the ice. it's a good way to make sure the sushi STAYS COLD. and they also serve some of the best salmon nigiri i've ever had. beautifully long pieces of salmon curling over the rice and touching the plate.
  9. in honor of this note, i ended up making mushroom risotto last night with dried porcini and cremini mushrooms. mmmm........

    Jamba Juice

i love jamba juice. i hate coffee, so i tell people i'm not coffee-powered, i'm juice poewred. my favorite is razzmatazz but with the bananas substituted with peaches. mmmmmmm........... i don't usually get a boost in it, though. they make it taste kinda chalky.
  11. i used to only eat them fried. then my dad shucked some fresh ones, and made me try one. i thought, "ew, kinda slimy, but tastes mostly the same as fried." but as time goes by, i now prefer them raw. something about their fresh sea taste is addicting.
  12. i got sick from a baconburger at a restaurant just a couple months ago. i'm still slowly trying to get back to eating hamburgers.

    Kershaw Shun Knives

SG: that's just heartlessly cruel of you. i bought my SO a shun 9" slicer since he loves making sushi. that knife is his baby and he's actually afraid to sharpen it because he's afraid of ruining the nice, straight edge. i like it because it's a beautiful, sturdy knife that is comfortable to use and retains its edge rather well.

    Making Lasagna

pan: besciamella has milk and butter in it, so she still wouldn't be able to use it. not unless she used her normal dairy substitutes like margerine <gag> and soymilk.

    Making Lasagna

my uncle is allergic to dairy products (not lactose intolerant, but actually allergic) and my poor aunt likes her dairy, so she sometimes has problems when cooking. since my uncle can't have cheese or dairy products of any kind, she has to get creative with lasagna. she's tried substituting tofu or eggplant for the ricotta to help soak up the sauce, but lasagna just doesn't taste right to me without any cheese.
  16. eunny, your pics are making me drool at my desk, which is making me fear for my keyboard. ever since i read about your egg yolk ravioli, i've been waiting to see how they turned out. thanks for sharing!! here are my personal carbonara preferences: bacon (i don't know san diego well enough to find a place that has pancetta) garlic, minced and sauteed with olive oil whole eggs, i don't add extra egg yolks no onions or shallots parmesan lots and lots of black pepper

    Hot Fresh Tortillas

i sometimes find them in the refrigerator cases by produce next to the cheese.

    Hot Fresh Tortillas

mine are from the san diego costco, but i suppose you could expect them there.

    Hot Fresh Tortillas

we use these all the time. they taste so much better than other store bought tortillas that are already cooked. i love munching on them when they turn light brown and crunchy.
  20. mmmm.....soup...... one of my all-time favorite soups is my mom's oxtail soup. no crackers, but dumped over white rice. yummy. another favorite is clam chowder with either oyster crackers or a warm chunk of sourdough bread. and i'm planning on battling the rainy weather by making potato leek soup tonight. ^_^
  21. i was sick over the weekend with a bout of food poisoning (who knew a baconburger could have such dire consequences???), and the SO and a friend went grocery shopping and came back with halloween candy in the form of kitkats and almond joy. since i had no appetite, i couldn't work up the energy to even try to enjoy the kitkats. so despite there being halloween candy in the house, i haven't had the appetite to eat any yet.
  22. i also really liked the white bolognese when i tried it. i can also recommend the ginger duck, but it should only be tried if you're not planning on leaving the house for several hours, since you need to turn the duck every hour or so. i've been wanting to try the watercress puree she mentions somewhere in the book, but i don't have a food processor. maybe this can be the excuse i need....

    Dinner! 2004

ok guys, don't hate but dinner last night was: penne with white bolognese (from amanda hesser's cooking for mr. latte) veal scaloppine from the same book both were rather tasty. ^_^
  24. my SO takes over the grilling, while i normally do most of the cooking. on the nights i'm working late, though, he cooks me dinner. usually. but it tends to be something grilled, and steamed veggies. <shrug> he likes my cooking better and he normally does the dishes (except when he cooks), so it works out for us.
  25. i was just up in san fran this past weekend, and my friends and i wanted to go for dim sum in chinatown. thankfully i remembered this thread and researched places to go, and we ended up at y ben house. it was intimidating for my friends because i was the only chinese person among them, and pretty much everyone else at y ben house was chinese, complete with the pushy aggression you find in predominantly chinese neighborhoods and restaurants. the food was great. really good, and just as authentic as if i had gone with my grandparents to dim sum in monterey park/alhambra. and the price? i was able to feed 6 people for $46.00. you can't really beat that. so i just wanted to thank those who mentioned and recommended y ben house.
