  1. You might want to check out Coffeegeek. I'm sure that someone there has had a similar experience. Good luck!
  2. The show looks to have been produced on a somewhat limited budget, so lots of travel is probably out of the question. For all I know, the whole series might have been shot in one long trip to Italy and Spain. That being said, I love the show! I like that it has real food without pretense. (The music and striped shirts do get kind of repetitive though)
  3. I've been to Tortilleria Sinaloa and the food is solidly good with the typical offerings of barbacoa, tongue, carnitas, etc. tacos. Being a tortilla factory, the tortillas have a wonderfully fresh flavor and they all come with salsa, lime wedges, and cilantro on the side. I saw cabrito (goat) on the menu, but they had already sold out by the time I got there. I'd go back.
  4. It's rice pudding with raisins and cinnamon. Make sure and add one or two cinnamon sticks to the pudding.
  5. Yeah. The wife and I were discussing how nobody had clean hands (oops!) in that mess of a restaurant. What was stopping the floor manager and ops manager from making sure that the kitchen and pantry were clean? They all should've been fired. And the owner, if he lets dirtbags steal his money, he can only blame himself. What a disgraceful place.
  6. You might want to try the Technivorm. Not cheap, but it's probably the best home brewer out there.
  7. I thought that I'd add in here that there are plans to establish a farmer's market in Olney. Here is a link with more information. We are planning to be there, selling our fresh-roasted coffee.
  8. I love pupusas, especially the cheese that oozes out and burns on the griddle. I'll have to check this place out. Note: Since that Washington Post article came out, Jorge Chicas has been promoted to Culinary Director of Special Projects in Thinkfoodgroup, the management company for Jose Andres' restaurants.
  9. Very glad to see that. Listen to your customers, they'll let you know if you're moving in the right direction. Sorry if I came across a little harshly before. I just hated the thought of serving pods, especially in the home of espresso! Good luck in your new venture!
  10. Here's a cappuccino that I made a few days ago.
  11. Chefg, You are in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Jeff
  12. I know that it doesn't directly answer your question, but you might want to consider looking into a local coffee roaster. They'll be in a better position to directly meet your needs and your coffee will be fresher. You'll also be supporting the local community and foodways.
  13. I'm looking forward to seeing it! Do you have any links to more information? I couldn't find anything on the PBS website.
  14. All I could think was "system D." I'd put money down that at least once in his career, GR has done something equally bad. Gross as it sounds, it's probably much more common than we'd care to know.
  15. A little research revealed that Dualit discontinued their espresso machines. For that reason alone, I would stay away, since warranty support would probably be sketchy at best. Their website indicates that they only make percolators, the single worst way to make coffee that exists. I like Dualit toasters though.
  16. About 15 years ago, I drove up to the window at a Burger King to witness the floor inside covered with about an inch of water and the personnel walking on pallets and taking orders as if nothing was wrong. I kept on driving.
  17. That is exactly my experience as well with Ethiopian Harar, an unwashed, dry-processed coffee. Just a tad bit of sugar turns it into a blueberry poptart. I generally drink my coffee black, but I find that the addition of a little milk brings out caramel, nutty flavors in some coffees (like Brazils). Putting milk into a high-acid coffee makes it taste "cheesy" to me though.
  18. I have a tin of bacon bandages in the medicine cabinet. What I really want though, is the bacon-scented car air freshener. Nothing like a couple of strips of bacon hanging from the ol' rear view mirror.
  19. I was there last Sunday and it was bustling. If you go, make sure and get a mushroom sandwich from the mushroom lady. Grilled, marinated portobellos are placed into a pita on top of mixed greens which she then covers with fresh basil and feta cheese. Words can't describe the yumminess of that sandwich. I also got a big bunch of cilantro, lettuce, and spinach. The bill was shockingly low at only 4 dollars. So yeah, the market is worth it.
  20. Not exactly DC area, but the Glenwood farmer's market in Howard County started up on May 5th. Robert Audia, the market master, is there from Audia's Farm North and is not selling vegetables yet, but has some nice herbs, tomato and pepper plants, and ornamentals. South Mountain Creamery is also selling cheeses, milk, and butter out of their truck. The market runs from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays until November. Disclosure: I own a coffee company which is at the market.
