  1. In New Brunswick try Stage Left, Soho on George or Panico's. Was not thrilled with Pheasant's Landing.
  2. I think the place we like to get bagels and bialys from is Stein's on Bloomfield near Passaic Ave. in Caldwell. It is in the shopping center where Linda's chicken is located.
  3. If this is a business lunch go another mile up Bloomfield Ave. to Prospect. Make a right and go to Eagle Rock Ave. Make a left and watch for the sign for Highlawn Pavillion ( High Lawn Pavilion Eagle Rock Reservation West Orange 973-731-3463) which has a gorgeous view of the NYC skyline. Another suggestion would be Luce Luce 115 Bloomfield Avenue Caldwell 973-403-8500. Let us know where you end up and how it was.
  4. B. Young--Thank you for your very honest and thoughtful response. Please don't be a stranger to eGullet. We welcome your expertise on bread baking (and of course any other opinions on food/dining and/or NJ).
  5. Be sure to give us a detailed report.
  6. BYO is very common in NJ. Some of us even BYOG--bring our own glasses.
  7. Thanks Larry. Many eGulleters have discovered this restaurant and agree with you 150%.
  8. Rail Paul--I haven't been to Lilac in a long time. Is it worth a trip back? Basilico is consisitantly good and a lovely looking restaurant.
  9. Glad you liked it. Hunan Cottage is my favorite Chinese restaurant. I like it more than China 46 but don't tell Jason!
  10. Molly Pitcher Inn--Red Bank The Grenville--Bay Head Meritage--Wall The Quay--Sea Bright Sister's Cafe--Spring Lake
  11. Yes, it used to be 40 Main. I had dinner once at Martini's and thought it was good but lunch today was very disappointing.
  12. How many pounds of carrots equal 1 quart of shredded carrots?
  13. Would it be possible for the cheese shop to be open at the end of the day? This way the cheese won't be sitting in a hot car for 10 hours!
  14. Never been but alot of people seem to like E & V Ristorante 320 Chamberlain Ave. Paterson 973-942-4664 Off of 80 & 46.
  15. Rail Paul--REALLY enjoying your posting. This is great. Thanks.

  17. Please post address and phone #.
  18. Dinner tonight Was at Greek Delights! Started off with humus and a potato and garlic dip served with warm pita. Entrees were a special of grilled chicken with spinach and tomatoes--great seasonings and juicy chicken. Also had the baked eggplant with onion , parsley, garlic and tomato sauce. Delicious and the eggplant was creamy and not bitter. We shared baklava for dessert which was excellent as it wasn't overly saturated with honey. All desserts are homemade. Dinner was $40 with tax and 20% tip. BYO Where did you dine this weekend?
  19. Had a lovely romantic brunch at the San Ysidro Ranch once. It was a long time ago. FWIW, it's where JFK and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned. I think that's right but somehow didn't they also honeymoon at the Hotel Hana Maui? I've had a few honeymoons so I can relate to this! Ok-we haven't made hotel reservations yet and now I am thinking that we should stay in Santa Barbara and make that our home base. The other alternative is to go to Ojai for 2 nights and then to Santa Barbara for 3 nights. Any suggestions on how to break up this trip?
  20. Yes, we did eat there once. It was good but no different than any other Chinese restaurant. We LOVE Hunan Cottage on Rt 46 which is about 1 mile away. Do a search if you want to read the many postings on the board about Hunan Cottage.
  21. Sara--Thanks for the report. Keep them coming!
  22. We've had take out from the Chinese restaurant in Livingston on S Livingston Ave in the Kings strip mall. Have also had take out from the Chinese restaurant on Eisenhower Parkway near Eagle Rock Ave. There is a beauty salon, Tony's pizza restaurant, Weight Watchers in the mall. Never been to Asian Delite in West Caldwell. Exactly where is it located?
  23. Memo to self: When Tommy says a restaurant is very good IT IS VERY GOOD! We dined this weekend at Village Green, 36 Prospect St, Ridgewood; BYO. I don't know why this little gem has not been discovered as Chef Thomas Goodman serves delicious, quality food and has a deft hand with sauces. The menu although small, is very interesting, with many tempting choices making it hard to decide what to order. When seated an amuse bouche containing a sardine wrapped around a square of avocado and surrounded by finely diced tomatoes and crème fraiche was placed on the table along with a choice of olive, pumpernickel or seven grain bread. There were seven appetizers and Lowell had the seared squab breast, onion confit and duck broth which is one of the best renditions of this dish that I have ever had. The thick slabs of squab were juicy and the broth like all of Chef Goodman's sauces created a bread-dipping episode where we were each vying for the last drop. All of the dishes we sampled were very generous servings and I had a tremendous baby red mustard green salad with blue cheese, candied pecans, strawberries and a Cabernet vinaigrette. The interesting play of flavors-- tangy dressing, sweet berries and pecans and salty/creamy blue cheese, elevated this to a very special salad that could be easily shared by two people. Other appetizers that we would have loved to try were the lime marinated fluke ceviche served in a martini glass and the steamed little neck clam chowder. Entrees also had balanced flavors and provided instant pleasure. The chipotle glazed Niman Ranch pork tenderloin with blackbeans, sweet corn, cilantro, and parsnip puree was an exciting dish that contained a wonderful ensemble of tastes and textures without overwhelming the palate. I'm not a fan of cilantro but didn't mind it's subtle flavor in this dish and the parsnips had a hidden surprise of flecks of bacon. My Nova Scotia halibut was layered with blini and foie gras (do I need to say more?) and was surrounded with tiny multicolored heirloom tomatoes, English peas and consommé. Again, the bread became a sponge for the delectable sauce. Next time I'm ordering the Australian free range rack of lamb with potato gratin and rosemary sauce or the diver sea scallops with veal sweetbreads, morel mushroom, summer truffles and asparagus puree. And now that I have tasted Chef Goodman's preparation of melt in your mouth fois gras I hope the seared Hudson Valley foie gras with caramelized mango and huckleberry sauce is still an appetizer when I return to Village Green. We were only able to manage one dessert and although the banana cream pie with mango caramel and chocolate shavings came highly recommended by our delightful waitress, we opted for a lip puckering lemon tart. All desserts are made in house and other options were: Tahitian vanilla bean crème brulee; fallen chocolate soufflé cake with raspberry puree; and fresh berries with crème anglaise. Coffee and cappuccino were excellent and a perfect ending to a memorable meal. With tax and tip the bill was $118. Do try this restaurant. Phone: 201-445-2914.
  24. There is also a place to eat on the Grounds For Sculpture inside one of the Arts Building. It's run by Souffle Caterers.
  25. I am in Cleveland at least once a year and am desperate to know of a good place to dine. Does not need to be fancy but someplace that is memorable. When dining out in Cleveland where do you like to go? And in the US is there any restaurant that you would put on the same level as The French Laundry?
