    M.F.K Fisher

I was a bit relieved finding out that she was a "right bitch" and that some of the writing of her younger years was either a result of elaboration or vivid imagination. She became more human to me...even with all the tragedies, her life seemed so charmed, almost mystical. Then again, the woman dealt with failed marriages, suicides, a troubled child, money woes...She watched the love of her life die "too slowly" and also had the privilege of hearing him blow his brains out (unless that was one of her elaborations) so I'm fully prepared to forgive her for any mean streak she may have shown the people in her life.
  2. Don't misunderstand me, I love the stuff. I live right around the corner from the Chelsea location and I've been there a number of times in the few weeks since it's opened. But for such limited offerings, the prices are outrageous. Yesterday I got a large green tea and a medium plain, NO add ins, and it came to $13+. expensive habit...

    Pregnant Dinner Guest

And I would like to agree with Pan about how sweet and considerate your endeavor is. I can't add much, i'm nine weeks and like others, aversions and cravings are a day to day thing. Food smells don't bother me too much (luckily since I'd be in trouble at work) but so far I've had no problem eating anything in front of me if I'm hungry enough. just don't be offended if she doesn't clean her plate! I do a lot better when I eat less, more frequently.
  4. I shop at the one on 23rd St fairly often. They're on a par with Balducci's and Westside Market; same stuff, similar prices, nice people. I admit I don't go out of my way to shop there because I live sort of in the center of there and the other two stores I mentioned so it really depends on just where I happen to be. One minus is that they don't carry Sullivan St. or Tom Cat bread, I can get much better ciabattas at the other two stores.
  5. A Weaver chicken pattie on a very well toasted english muffin with lots of Cheez Wiz and jalapenos.
  6. I had a problem with the writer's tone, as I couldn't quite tell if he was taking the subject seriously or if he was mostly mocking the whole movement. But that's the way it is with a lot of New York cover stories. I thought Quorn sounded pretty good. has anyone tried the peanut butter Oreos? Maybe i'll check the cookie thread...haven't in awhile.
  7. Bananas and yogurt early in the day. That's all I can tolerate. Crackers don't do it for me early...feels like eating sawdust. Once i've been awake for a few hours, i can handle real food, but the sweet smooth stuff is aces early on. And the yogurt is a plus because I feel like it sweetens and freshens my mouth; brushing my teeth can NOT happen too soon after waking, the gag reflex is ridiculously sensitive. I work in an Italian restaurant with really good bread, and classic, crispy sesame breadsticks. Those I can nibble on all day when the queasies hit, which at this point (7-8 weeks) is CONSTANTLY.
  8. There were FOUR Carambas! with 1 to 4 exclamation points, I guess depending on which opened first. One was upper west on Broadway, one was upper east on Mad, one was lower Broadway near Tower as posted and the fourth was on Eighth around 54th or 55th. The food was pure sludge, but we went when we were underage and they didn't card us. And those margaritas were the best. ah the 80's. ETA: haha, I'm laughing because I'm rereading this thread and I see I wrote essentially the same thing on page three, last year! guess I've been missing the 80's for awhile.
  9. Hehe, at my last job, we served delicious mashed sweet potatoes with golden raisins as a side dish. A guy from one of the financial offices upstairs called for takeout, asked if he could get the mash without raisins. I said the raisins were already mixed in. He asked if we could PICK THEM OUT. I patiently explained that they were golden raisins, and as such, virtually invisible. "Oh really?" yeah. My cousin was a waiter at a Wall St. area restaurant, claimed some suits requested their buffalo wings boned. He laughed. At my current place of employment, one Father's Day several years ago, a family ordered our large porterhouse well done. Well, they sent it back because we don't carry A1 sauce!
  10. That was good stuff. They had a chocolate malt flavor when they first came out, but it didn't last too long.
  11. This is a bit OT, but someone on a previous page mentioned Aleve. I've only taken ibuprofen for cramps, is Aleve better? Although, goodness knows pain relievers are a definite craving this time of the month, so maybe not so OT after all.
  12. "To Begin Again," and "Stay Me, Oh Comfort Me." I enjoy the early year memoirs even though a lot of that life was debunked in her bio. I always found the later stuff so heartbreaking. She had a wild life, that's for sure.
  13. Yep. These are gonna be my killer this summer and I only discovered them yesterday. Smaller than bon bons, bigger than Dippin Dots. Poppable and delicious. I bought the Nestle's Crunch and Caramel flavor yesterday. hubby and i went wild for the Nestle's Crunch, the Caramel not so much, i hate fake caramel flavor. Today i bought the toffee almond flavor and that's my favorite so far. I wanted to try the mint because i love mint ice cream, but the color turned me off.
  14. I third it. I make it quite frequently and it's delicious and perfect.

    La Caridad 78

Both Chinitas, La and Sam, on Eighth are gone. i miss them.
  17. I've been a couple of times midday. No lines to get in, lightning fast pay lines and super nice cashiers. I'll be going regularly. It's across town from me, so if I don't feel like walking, it's a bus or L train ride, but worth it for the incredible prices and fun, yes FUN, products. and the BEST frikkin' ginger snaps I have ever had in my life.
  18. Manhattan Special IS great, very "real," I've been drinking it since I was a wee tot, and it's the only sweet soda I can tolerate.
  19. That's my fault. I loved it too, therefore it's discontinued. on the website, they list a butterscotch pudding, so maybe that's similar. Haven't seen it yet. Anyway, on my last flight (AA), to and from London, I had delicious meals both ways. Lasagne to and beef stew with spaetzle (!!!) from. Then they gave us a little snack box towards the end with crackers, fake cheese, cookies and something else, I think potato chips. I'm not organized enough to pack a meal before flying, but most airports have delis with decent sandwiches ready to go (JFK's JetBlue terminal in particular)...otherwise I just carry some protein bars or fig newtons.
  20. My first trip to London. I've been invited out to dinner to a vegetarian restaurant called Blah Blah Blah that's near Shepherd's Bush on Saturday, and Friday night I suggested Indian near our hotel in Covent Garden. Any reviews of the former or suggestions for the latter? Any other must-eats?
  21. Valrona Le Lacte, El Rey Icoa White and Cadbury Dairy Milk. I prefer dark chocolate as a coating, could never really dig it eaten straight.
  22. If i'm hungry before my workout, I get a Jamba and drink it during. More typically I get one right after. Current favorites are the Matchas.
  23. My favorite is at Billy's Bakery, on Ninth Ave between 21st and 22nd sts.
  24. While I always consider it a compliment (I'm 39) to get carded, even though I know in most cases it's probably NOT personal, deltadoc's sitch was just ridiculous, what with the waitress grabbing the glass and booking and all. However, I had reason to be a bit miffed recently...I was out for dinner with my significantly younger husband; he was carded, I chuckled and said to the waiter, 'oh I guess you need to see my ID too, eh?' He looked at me for a beat, then replied, 'no.' There went his tip... ETA: HA! I replied before I read the reply directly above mine...maybe they were related...
  25. Is it steamed, stir-fried, deep-fried . . . ? ← Not steamed, not deep fried, so probably sauteed along with the rest of the ingredients...but I think the tofu starts out drier and chewier...unlike clouds of fresh tofu that would fall apart in the dish.
