  1. tommy, Here's a whole bunch of cooking videos for you.
  2. Have we done a thread on that? If not let's. A "What's the Best Thing to Do with a Numb Tongue?" thread?
  3. I don't have the proper term on the tip of my tongue, but I usually make a sauce where fermented soy beans play a major role.
  4. You do know that the sperm in that chapter is spermaceti, not semen, right? That said, it's pretty hard to avoid cracking a smile when referring to "sperm whales." It's like "homo erectus." The way it's phrased by Melville, undergrads always wanted to talk about that chapter!
  5. Kate, Here's that Melville for you.
  6. Cook at home. At least I know I'm really really good.
  7. Speaking of sex & a can of worms . . . Remember Melville's chapter in Moby Dick where the sailors are kneading whale sperm? It was always interesting to lead a class discussion on that chapter. Oh dear...shall we start a new thread so you can explain this one? Or has this topic gone off-topic enough that we can just talk about it here? You'll need to read the original version. I think the Classics Illustrated dropped that chapter.
  8. Is this the eGullet version of fatalism? Sadly, it does seem inevitable in many consumer based industries. Vive La Revolution!

  10. So many posts in so little time . . . As for me, do you have to ask?
  11. Is this the eGullet version of fatalism?
  12. Have you ever wondered about the person who originated the following . . . ? "Sex is like pizza. When it's good, it's really really good. When it's bad, it's still good."
  13. Change the pronoun & I have the pithy saying for my headstone.
  14. Kate, Let me put it this way . . . It's not about going out to eat at wonderful restaurants all the time. (I don't eat out often & when I do it's usually local ethic places or during a trip to Chicago.) What it's about is this: A weeknight, I'm tired & blah blah blah, I want something eat. Do I go to OG or CF? No, I reach in the pantry for some linguine, canned anchovies, EVVO, & some fresh garlic. I made a simple sauce with the anchovies, EVVO, & garlic and I boil some pasta. Mix together. Pour a glass of wine. Cut off a big slice of bread. I have a meal for about $2.50. I don't do this often as I don't eat a lot of pasta. But--given a *choice*--this trumps a chain everytime.
  15. My "lazy" reference aims at eating well at home rather than eating crap out. Of course, business lunches, gatherings with clueless friends & family, etc. may necessitate dining at somewhere like CF. But when given a *choice,* I'd take a home meal over a chain all day long.
  16. I fail to realize how this argument supports the ingestion of crappy food. A rephrasing might be, "Some people are lazy."
