    Dinner! 2003

Oregano and Lemon Thyme Chick Pea Flour Pizza with a Tomato and Onion Confit, topped with Cheve right before being put in the broiler. Maybe an arugula salad later.
  2. Couldn't agree more with JAZ. The Best recipe? That's like saying "Best excerise. Period." or "best body type." Anway, I do agree with the authors of this list that Vanity Fair has gone down hill. I noticed 2 years ago and let my subscription die out. People magazine? Now, that's subjective.
  3. Man, that's gotta be a hard choice for some... work for Ramsay or work for the drug of choice.
  4. I started a thread on the where to shop for supplies aspect: Clicky--ethnic groceries Kate, maybe if ask for suggestions for your area, a lurker will come forth?
  5. The only frozen vegetables I buy are peas and okra (the latter for a south indian dish) Frozen broccoli? Never. It is so cheap anyway. And, sorry, but I would never buy peeled/minced garlic. Never. Actually, if you rarely use ginger, you can store it in the freezer--it actually makes it easier to grate. I do buy chicken stock--Trader Joes and Whole Foods make good ones. Yes, I do make my own with roasted chicken carcasses... Occasionally, I'll make a lamb stock as well. We use a mixture of homemade and store-bought spices. Grind our own cumin powder? Dry our own chiles? Nope. Vikram--Welcome! I look forward to hearing more about Bombay. My boyfriend's family is from Bombay/Banglore. In any case, do what suits your lifestyle. It's not worth it to get so worked up about it. Get over yourself.
  6. Did anyone else see irony in the fact that this was published in the Recession issue?
  7. Hey, you never know... It may be that I am in my mid-20s, but I still have no idea where I will end up... my boyfriend is pursuing his PhD in history; hence we go where ever he gets a job. I mean, we can't all shop/eat in East Grand Rapids...
  8. I thought it might be useful if Egulleters could reveal where they go for cheap produce, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, etc groceries (the list is endless)... I'll start. I live in Chicago, so I am pretty lucky. Indian groceries: I go to Patel Brothers on Devon and Campbell (?)..the big supermarket one. They Last night, I purchased chick pea flour, curry leaves, Basmati, and 3 types of pickle. For cheap organic produce and good deli meets, I go to Hyde Park Produce, on E. 53rd St.
  9. One of the things I really miss about D.C. He was there the last night we went. And, you're right, considering the quality, the prices are not that bad.
  10. 3 more for me. Elizabeth Schneider, From Amaranth to Zuchini Jacques Pepin, The Apprentice Mario Batali, Simple Italian
  11. Of the 2 CF locations I can think of in the Chicagoland area, there is very actual seating for the people who are waiting. The one downtown is in a sunken area--if it is nice out you can sit by the fountain. Otherwise, during the other 11 months of the year, you have to squeeze yourself in a corner surrounded by drunken sailors. Went a few times my first year in college, which was oh so many years ago. CF sucks. Overpriced, and like other chain restaurants, they irresponsibly over-serve food. An entire serving dish of pasta for one person? Fyre--great 1st post. Really fascinating.
  12. Rava dosa with masala (spiced mashed non-dairy potatoes) filling. Coconut chutney Maybe on the way back from Evanston tomorrow...

    Dinner! 2003

Do you ever serve sorbets between courses? Do you ever steal away a cookie at 3 pm with a cup of tea? The dish with the fava beans sounds great. Are Romano beans an heirloom variety? Please describe. Thanks.
  14. Call them rolly-pollys as well. Didn't realize that they were pests. I have a few on my balcony.
  15. Matchbooks are the only thing I actively collect in my daily live. I have everything from a diner in Hammond, IN to the this old French bar in Soho in London, where I went the day I was laid off.... Love old linens-- my father bought some Parisian linens from the 20s a couple of years ago. And silver. I think Maggie has got me started on a fine hobby. Oh, I collect crumbs, but I do that without even trying.
  16. Hey, a fellow chicagoan here. Where is "Little Vietnam" ? I also second Hollywood's request. Thanks.
  17. I have spent every summer in Kport since I was 3 with my family. We rarely go out to eat when we we are there, but there are a couple of places in Cape Porpoise that haven't been mentioned. I forget the name of it, but if you are in Cape Porpoise, head to the docks, harbor and you will see a lobster/clam shack. My mother and friends swear by their lobster roll. We also really like Prebbles, a great fishmonger. And there is a little gourmet/small everyday grocery store down the road between Prebbles and the harbor. I am sorry the name also escapes me. If you go to the Clam Shack, watch out for the gulls! Edit: Saw that Holly mentioned the Cape Porpoise Lobster Company. Not sure if that is the same place?
  18. It seems that you are approaching this project in the best way possible. One trick that I am trying recently is to eat your cravings in halfsies or such. For example, after my yoga class on Friday, I go to the health food store below and get a blueberry protein shake at the juice bar. Cravings haven't been met--don't be silly. I also buy a grab bag of the Kettle's Salt and Vinegar potato chips. Also, at Maggie's party last Saturday, I had not one but two slices of her Lemon Curd tart with blackberries. It was more than worth it.

    Light beer

As much as I love beer, sometimes after a night out drinking beer, it feels like you have consumed a meal. People like light beers because they are less filling and or have fewer calories.
  20. Have breakfast at Flo. Really fantastic food and everytime we go I feel like we should have paid more. Flo 1434 W. Chicago Chicago, IL 60622 312.243-0655

    Dinner! 2003

Last night: Tuna steaks seared (S and P) Matchstick potato sticks fried in olive oil Arugula tossed with fresh lemon juice
  22. Chapatis. My boyfriend likes 2nd day chocolate souflee.
  23. I have my grandmother's 1961 1st ed. of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, vol. 1 and 2. Vol. 1 is following apart, but opens easily to the recipe for soufflee grand marnier--my grandfather's speciality. Also, there are a few crayon scribbles in it from my sister when she was a child. I still cook from it frequently-- but it is falling apart.
