I have a flat of strawberries in the fridge to make freezer jam this weekend. I will be canning spiced blueberries, spiced peaches, vidalia onion relish, and the pear relish in Scott Peacock and Edna Lewis's book. Priscilla very kindly sent me a spare copy of Fine Preserving by Catherine Plagemann this past spring. Lovely book. I also have guajolote to thank for his recommendation of The Joy of Pickling by Linda Ziedrich which is excellent.
Emma wanted a Nemo cake this year. I can say with some authority that neither Giant nor Safeway has a Nemo themed cake, and none of the area craft stores had a fish shaped cake pan. She settled for a starfish shaped cake that I formed from two rounds and frosted myself. However, Spiderman is all over the place now since the new movie release. I'd go for it over Nemo. What did Amphora have to say?
my guess is she's trying to be an educator. there have been more than 1 example of people even here on egullet who have said "what does EVOO" mean when it has been metioned in a thread or recipe proving that even though we know what it means, the entire world isn't as smart as us. Well OK then.
You could try imagining them in a different context. Paula's OK, it's her accent that drives me a little crazy. Emeril's vocal tics are so predictable it's fun to guess which one will be next. "How bout you get yourself one of them frozen things" "60-80 cloves of garlic" "It's a food of love thing" etc. etc. And the Rachel Ray EVOO thing is just puzzling. Why does she do that over and over again? Why not just leave the acronym out? And has anyone mentioned annoying theme music yet?
This will probably get me laughed right off the thread but I find him and his manner of speaking very attractive. Nah no laughing. He's a doll and quite charming. I am not alone!!! Actually, the only problem I have with his show is not enough shots of him from behind. On topic now...every host have some vocal tic that will drive you nuts if you focus on it too much. I just try to pay attention to what's cooking on the tolerable shows and don't watch the ones that really make me crazy, like Paula Deen.
In our family it was called "American Chop Suey" and made with Campbell's tomato soup. Didn't we talk about a lot of this on the thread about stuff we like that most people think sucks?
Scott and Emma are bailing out, but I will be there with young Mr Shorter. I'm even skipping my performance of Cyrano de Begerac at the Shakespeare Theatre.
I love this topic. Food in History is good, and so areMuch Depends on Dinner by Margaret Visser and Near a Thousand Tables by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto.
Fri: Going to a friend's party and roasting marshmallows and making s'mores. Sat: Cookout with old friends and assorted kids. Watermelon and popsicles. Sun: Grilling burgers, drinking margaritas and watching the Rockville fireworks from my front lawn. 4th of July is my favorite food holiday - peaches, grilled meat, watermelon, ice cream, corn on the cob... Edit: I forgot to mention the blueberry cobbler with homemade ice cream on Sunday.
I always check out other carts. I shop during the day and it's usually other moms so the selections are boring: Cheerios, milk, diapers, etc. Although there is usually one person with a cart full of amazing crap food like Lunchables, juice boxes, frozen PB & J sandwiches, jell-o, and stuff like that.
