  1. I don't think it would take much arm twisting to enjoy a meal at Jaleo here in Washington. The best tapas I have had outside of Spain.
  2. "like a heartbeat drives you mad, in the stillness of remembering what you had..." Great blog, Seth. Thank you!
  3. That must have been quite a performance, Seth. Tom Sawyer? Rush? I do something similar, especially late at night. It has to be upbeat, especially late. All the disco favorites from my Jr high roller rink days usually do the trick, stuff like "Funkytown" and "I Will Survive." Cheesy lite metal singalongs (think Def Leppard's greatest hits) work too. Sorry to hear that Addie's entrees disappointed.
  4. I have giant dead, squished bugs all over my yard and driveway. The smell is awful. No way!
  5. Aw shucks, sorry Addie's didn't work out. Maybe try Jaleo in Bethesda? They don't take reservations but they're open later than 10. We roll the sidewalks up pretty early here in the 'burbs.

    Dinner! 2004

Pasta salad: farfalle, cold poached salmon, peas, dill, with a lemon juice and creme fraiche dressing. A nice pink Cotes de Provence to go with the pink fish. SethG's fabulous sourdough - thanks Seth! To continue the pinkness, watermelon for dessert.
  7. This isn't going to work for us.
  8. Seth, Leah and Nate dropped by this morning for a visit- and Seth brought me a loaf of his sourdough! It tastes just as delicious as it looks. Nate, Leah and Ian got along nicely, and Seth & I talked food for awhile. I will post some pics when I get my film developed.
  9. No, it was just a business opportunity.
  10. There's a difference? It's so hard to tell these days.
  11. Have you read Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond? He covers this topic at length, along with how animal husbandry increased disease. Very interesting stuff.
  12. Oh, that cheese. Where is the drool smiley? Yum yum.
  13. I agree. It's much better than mine was too.
  14. I would, but she won't be home from the hospital until late tonight! I'll save some to bring over if she wants some, though. We'll probably go over there once or twice and make them dinner in the next few weeks, after the respective parents' visits are over. That will be a blessing to them. I remember - as I'm sure you do too - what a blur the first few weeks are when the last thing you want to do is get in the kitchen and cook. And if mom is nursing she will be especially hungry.
  15. I have Le Crueset envy. I second the fish soup idea, or maybe just mussels with lots of white wine, butter, and parsley. Mmmmm. Fabulous with a loaf to soak up the juices. The Mediterranean Seafood stew from Julia & Jacques Cooking at Home is a favorite of mine. My blog was the week of Hurricane Isabel so it included fridge and freezer cleanouts, emergency supplies, and three days of no power.
  16. Thanks John. Several of my friends will be getting a copy for the holidays this year.
  17. You would think so, wouldn't you? But in my experience, it's not the case. Small children have much more sensitive palates and prefer blander meals initially. This was probably an evolutionary advantage. Sweet flavors and fat (just like mom's milk) are absolutely preferred. My daughter is very adventurous about taste, but not texture. My son is more limited in his taste preferences. There is a very good chance that one or both is a supertaster like their mother, if so I have a long row to hoe getting them accustomed to bitter greens, hot peppers, and stinky cheese - things I could not eat until I was an adult. They are served kale regularly, but neither has learned to like it yet and there's no way I am going to force it down their throats just to prove a point.
  18. Yes. I'm trying to sort it out.
  19. No stones from me, Dean. Emma typically packs a sandwich, sliced fruit (or grape tomatoes, or cucumber), and milk or lemonade. I will probably continue packing her lunch once she starts kindergarten because the private school she will attending has awful food. Lots of kids have the option of (free) school lunch or no lunch at all. It would be nice for them to get something with nutrition instead of merely calories.
  20. If my daughter's class is representative then Fat Guy is right. PB & J on white bread, lots of juice boxes, Lunchables, almost no one with any veggies...it's pathetic. And these are mostly kids of educated parents who presumably know something about nutrition.
  21. Lisa, I was in Baltimore yesterday and saw the poster next to the ship. I read it and thought to myself that it sounded interesting...then realized that it was you!
  22. Wow, thanks. They lived in Boston and Hopkinton MA, so maybe that's where it's from. I should get it checked out.
  23. This was dinner last night. I browned round steak, then simmered in tomato sauce until the meat was tender. Shredded the meat and served over buttered egg noodles. Everyone liked it. Thanks Jaymes!
