  1. My husband had a salmon cheesecake at NOLA that he still raves about 10 years later. Cheesecake is so rich that tart fruit flavors are needed. Lemon and lime are my favorites. Cranberry cheesecake is pretty good - the cranberries are pureed and swirled through the cheesecake. Sour cherries would probably be good in cheesecake too.
  2. Mike, your "no indian, chinese, or japanese" killed most of my recommendations. We like Addie's on Rockville Pike, across from White Flint Mall. I'll post the address and phone number tomorrow when I have time to look it up.
  3. The coupons are generated automatically based on your purchases and it's almost always a competing product. My grocery mixes those with some store specific coupons like $5 or $10 off your next purchase. Do the corporations pay the grocery store to offer checkout coupons for their products? Joe, prepare for a junk mail deluge once peanut leaves the shell. Once the marketers figure out you're having a baby...
  4. We're going to be camping next week. I am trying to figure out what provisions to take. The plus side is that we can only open the cooler once a day.
  5. TJ's cooking sauces are good, especially when it's 5pm and I have no idea what's for dinner. They aren't bad calorie-wise either if made with a little meat and lots of vegetables.

    Mead

Wow, what an interesting and timely thread. We'll be at the Pennsic War all next week, and many of the folks there specialize in medieval/rennaissance food and drink. Mead can be had in plenty... maybe I will sample as many as I can and post my impressions once we're back.
  7. Interesting, I'll have to try almond. Splenda has a horrid aftertaste to me - just as bad as saccherine and aspartame.

    Preserving Summer

Nope, my Target doesn't have anything. Thanks for the suggestion though. Peach jam tomorrow. Should I add ginger?

    Preserving Summer

Where do you live? I am surprised that your local supermarkets do not carry them. I'm in the DC area. Guess not too many people can here. Food Lion has lids, pectin, and pickling salt but no jars. Ronnie, we don't have many old-school hardware stores here. Home Depot rules. I am leaning towards buying jars online.
  10. Aren't we all eGullet big shots? Unfortunately, the 7th is out of the question so we're out.
  11. I think Marc Fisher reduced the discussion to "foodie snobs" vs. "courageous chef." I'm curious whether he attempted to contact the eGullet posters that he quoted?
  12. If it's 9/21 then add hjshorter and sashorter. Pork chops? And I want to try the biscuits.

$18.95? Yikes. Wal-Mart is the only store near me that carries canning jars. And it's near only if you think a 20 minute drive qualifies. I made a lovely batch of Zydeco Green Beans from Joy of Pickling last night. Tonight's project is bread and butter pickles, then spiced peaches on Monday. What a fun hobby this is turning out to be.
  14. Awesome.
  15. Jensen, I have done WW in the past with great success, and am gearing up for another try. I cannot do an Atkins type low carb diet, but a modified lower carb WW really works. The meetings around here are pretty useless, and I refuse to pay $60-75 a month just to get weighed, so I will be on my own. A support thread would be very helpful. I have the WW/CIA cookbook and the few things I've tried have been very good.

  17. For a three year old brat...yes. I hate to break it to you, but three-year-olds think that everything in the world belongs to them. Just sit in at a preschool sometime and watch. It takes a good long while to convince them otherwise.
  18. I would be interested but can't make on the 7th or 14th.
  19. My other favorite sushi scene: "Let's get sushi, and not pay" Corona with lime, yes. We would get a case or 2 to take the beach. Very trendy.
  20. For the greater good of the Shorter family I would be willing to make the sacrifice and take some off of your hands I'll call you. Tonight we had salad - fresh mozz, tomatoes, torn basil, chopped garlic, EVOO, balsamic vinegar, S&P. Oh my.
  21. I worked at the Kennedy Center in a previous life, and it gets a huge number of tourists because it's a memorial to JFK in addition to being a theater. The view from the roof in amazing, but the food used to be awful. The restaurant has been revamped so I want to try it next time we go to a show. The best part about working there was being allowed onto the roof terrace on the 4th of July to watch the fireworks on the Mall. The National Gallery of Art (hillvalley is right, it's not part of the Smithsonian) has resisted fast food, but it's restaurants very wildly in quality from pretty good to awful. The sit-down place on the ground floor (Garden Cafe?) is a nice place to get a bowl of soup and a cup of coffee. The cafeteria ranges from bad to acceptable. The gelato is good but pricey and my kids love the moving walkway that runs past the fountain to the East Wing. The Smithsonian buffet tucked away in the castle is only for members and staff. It's unmemorable but a more civilized meal that McD's at the Air & Space. The Corcoran Gallery's restaurant is nothing special. If you're there on a weekday I recommend hoofing it to Breadline.
  22. Heather, you're a native east coast gal, aren't you? I lived in California during the 80's--we were much more into a valley-girl/Cindy Lauper/Madonna look. Like this: (Yes, that is me. Yes, that was taken less than two years ago. Yes, those are all original 80's clothes, shoes, shades & jewelry. No, I do not dress like that all the time.) Nice! Yes, the Madonna look was very big too. I recall that kind of heel with a miniskirt was usually accompanied by frilly ankle socks. Don't forget the Flashdance torn sweatshirt, leg warmers, and Members Only jackets. The Preppy Handbook was very popular in high school, leading to large outbreaks of headbands and topsiders.
  23. Great topic. We've hit the tomato mother lode at our house. I have a dozen tomatoes on my counter, another dozen that should be ripe in the next couple of days, and another 3 dozen greens waiting in the wings! If we can't can all of them I may start giving them away to DC egulleteers. msphoebe, that bruschetta sound perfect - maybe a little fresh cracked pepper?
  24. We have a winner!
  25. No nose candy? Fondue is 70's, BTW. You should have lots of "preppy" costumes. Better than stepping into the Twilight Zone.
