  1. plus: Jakubc Mazal Ellen Everyone must bring something, preferrably handmade yeast bread. If not, then something else that is appropriate to this gathering.
  2. This is the supreme Atkins recipe!
  3. Whether or not something is ephemeral has no bearing on whether or not it is considered art.
  4. G. They both hurt only one hurts an animal and the other hurts.....well, an animal.
  5. I recently saw an add for a coffeemaker that really attracted my attention. It was made by Cuisinart, I think. You placed whole beans in the top, set the grind, added water and it ground the beans and brewed the coffee into a vacuum bottle. Anyone have any experience with this?
  6. How would you compare that to a Jew being invited to the home of a Christian family to participate in the decorating of their Christmas tree? In some ways, and I've experienced this myself, the sentiment is poor pathetic you, you don't even have Christmas. You can come and share ours. Obviously your religion is inferior and would never be good enough for us- what? no Christmas? Heaven forbid.
  7. Well I just read this whole thread and I cannot think of a more interesting or engaging thread having ever been on eGullet. It took me most of the evening as I did have some other things to do and I wanted to respond about a dozen times but was determined to read it to the end. Thats not to say that I wasn't intimidated by the level discourse, because I was. But now I'm at a loss to say anything other than Halle-fuckin-lujah. Maybe I can fashion a decent response tomorrow. Whew.

    Shopsin's

Here's what I remember: The Malaysian shrimp soup was called Shrimp Laksuh (?) The other dish was Pupusas, a Salvadoran taco-type dish with a smashed fried green plantain The sweet potato soup ( more like a bisque) was to die for and came with rice with pecans and currants cooked in about a pound of butter We had their homemade (I think) birch beer, very good The desserts, as J. said, were best of all- the cinnamon jelly donuts were like football-shaped golf balls- pop them in your mouth and start singing with pleasure Cliche though it is, the company was at least as good- and laughing, arguing and eating is far and away the best combo save one.
  9. They were really great and they were so different from one another. The match was inspired. If the show had a bigger budget it could have been spectacular. But alas, its no more. Does anyone remember the wine show with Jancis Robinson and Frank Prial?

  11. Cherry Heering, yes, thats right!
  12. What do you usually have at wakes, shiva etc.? My most intense memory is of Bartons Almond Kisses, an almond wrapped in chocolate caramel, chewy, crunchy, sweet and chocolatey.
  13. If we have it at 3:00, I think that'll work. The game doesn't start until 6:00 anyway. How does that sound? We can still bake, if we want, in the morning and be there by 3, right? There's a headcount limit too so save your place now.
  14. Oh, excuse me. You're right, of course, since you're the resident expert on what these boards are for. Go back and read my post again a few more times and then yours. You think the boards need perking up. I think that's worthy of pointing out and pretty telling also.
  15. Hmmmm. Attention moderators and the powers that be- someone thinks the boards need perking up already even before your new years pogrum No reflection on you, Timo.
  16. ALERT! I've just been informed that the 26th is the Superbowl. Should we change the date to the 19th??????? Personally I don't care but would hate to make anyone choose
  17. Unless someone has strong feelings to the contrary, I think we should all be judges of a kind but it shouldn't actually be a contest, just a display of talents. Buxie m'boy please do come. I'm sure you can come up with something to bring of any sort. After all you are a Moderator!
  18. Yes, yes we would be delighted and honored! PM me for delivery plans (Oh, and we may be getting a delivery from London too)
  19. Oh, and just to make it official, I'm doing challah.
  20. Okay people. We've got a place and the date is Sunday, January 26th. Yeast Breads made by hand, and accoutrements!
  21. Very interesting experiments Suvir. Thanks for the research. I now probaby know anything I could have wanted to know about my question.
  22. Thanks all for the info and recipes. Jinny, are you quite clear about your genetic heritage? There may have been a story or two about your forefathers and mothers left untold. Any recipes for hentalach?
  23. Yes, you can get the real thing here in NYC. On my one and only trip to Jewel Bako it was one of the "specials" at $12 a blob.
  24. Shaw mamaleh. I would like to try and make it if someone knows who might sell me calves feet Tanks dahlink.
  25. Well, I got together with some people who are more closely connected to the old Jewish traditions and foods than I am and wouldn't you know, they served, among other things, pe'tcha. It was pretty good. Picture an aspic mold with pieces of carrot and veal suspended in a jellied broth made from the calves feet cooking liquid. They served it with vinegar. Who remembers this and what else is there to know about it?
