  1. Nice to know there are some decent restaurants in Amsterdam- I've always eaten in asian or Indian establishments while there, and didn't know about the other places...
  2. I found a Food & Drink website, but with an address in Chicago. Is this still the one?
  3. Anyone know of a French couple (who owned the 6 Bosquet a couple years ago in Paris- great!) who bought a restaurant in Vancouver a few years back? Her name is Christine... I'd be really interested to know..
  4. The menu surprise at the Astrance wasn't even a surprise as Christophe, the owner, told me what it contained!

    Ledoyen

One of the new three stars in Paris Sorry to be picky , but it was one of the "new" three stars a year ago..
  6. The surprise menu is in two versions, as far as I know:one with wine, and one without. The one I had included a glass of wine with each course.
  7. I don't think it's possible to find any three star in Paris that has a tasing menu with wine for 95 Euros... More like double that , minimum...
  8. I disagree on Astrance. I found it excellent in every respect, and the best gourmet value in Paris. There's a reason why getting a table there is so difficult...
  9. Anti-American, I don't think so... Anti-American Government Politics maybe...
  10. Americans are still travelling, especially families, and seem to be having a great time, and enjoying the Paris springtime weather
  11. I would try the Brasserie Flo, 7 cour des Petites Ecuries or the Alsaco, 10 Rue Condorcet. Both are weill-known for their sauerkraut. For ambience, the Flo probably has the edge.
  12. All bullshit and anti-French negative publicity... I am American and live in Paris. While nearly everyone is against the war, I have yet to see anything like that which you described...
  13. I agree that London has the edge on Indian cuisine for whatever cultural reasons...too bad there isn't just ONE good one in Paris. Yugaraj , was, as well, a disappointment to me. Overpriced and underquality...
  14. so would some of the waiters.. (groan)
  15. I love good indian cuisine, and despite trying all of the top establishments in Paris (Indra, Annapurna,Chez Gandhi, etc) , have been disappointed every time. Anyone else? One I like, and which is consistently good (and is full pretty much every night) is called "Dip" , on the boulevard Saint Marcel in the 13eme (not far from Les Gobelins and the Jardin des Plantes). Nanda, the owner is actually Sri Lankan, and makes sure everything is fresh and delicious. Their website is Dip Indian Restaurant
  16. I've never heard of any of these strange cheeses.... must be living in the wrong place...

    Mash

Joel Robuchon has a microwave pureed pomme de terre here in France. They're small blocks of frozen mashed potatoes, you add milk, put it all in the microwave, and 6 minutes later , mmm!
  18. The Maison Rouge is run by the team at Maison Blanche. It is very cool, very design, and ok food for the price. Lots of models, fashion people, etc. You don't go there for the food.
  19. No objections with that whatsoever..but if you already know where you want to go, you call or send a fax. My cooments only pertained to the comments saying this was not a "tourist" guide and that it was popular with the French, that's all...
  20. Sure, everyone does advertising, but with this guide, you are not IN IT, unless you pay for the page...As I said before , it has good photos, and gives a general idea of the establishments portrayed, but you said it was "not just for tourists", and that French people use it, which is , in my experience , simply not true.. I know the person who puts out this guide, because he tries to sell it to my hotel, for "tourists". The French use the Michelin, Gault Milaut or other "French" guides....
  21. Mog--Chez Catherine has moved address since a long time, having taken over Guy Savoy's bistrot "Version Sud" in the 17th...no longer at rue de Provence, and definitely looking for a richer clientelle..
  22. Actually, "Reserve the Best" is a guide that tries to sell advertising, and all of the establishments in it have paid to be in the guide, as far as I know. Although the pictures are good, there are is no critical backbone, and the book is aimed at American tourists. I don't know of a single French person who uses it. All my Concierge friends toss it in the "poubelle" in favor of better guides...
  23. The onion soup in Pied de Cochon is one of the best...also at Sebillon, near the Champs Elysees isn't that bad...funny how onion soup is considered a really French classic to all foreigners, but it's very difficult to find a good one all over Paris. Concerning the New Year's Eve festivities, it is very much a tradition to have onion soup as a last item being sleeping or going home...
