  1. I really like the American dol idea IF they could keep it pure. Unknown chefs/wannabes ONLY. Ready Set Cook was originally, I believe, Ready Steady Cook with Ainsley Harriet. We just ripped England off as usual. Isn't Good Eats still doing repeats? I can't stand the endless repetition of the network. But I would rather see repeats of the quality shows than all of the crap their doing these days. When the network began, I watched it ALL THE TIME. Not to say they didn't sell swill at that time too, but it was fresh swill. And less of it, I think. Sorry to say, I don't watch anything there any more. Including shows I'd actually like to catch like Bourdain's. It's just so far out of my will to tune in since the great drought. Why oh why did they take off Classic Cooks (or whatever it was called)? I mean, never ending material, or what? I'm depressed. And wasn't Michelle Urvater doing How to Boil Water for a while? For the life of me I can't remember the other hosts. How To Die A Thousand Deaths?
  2. When I used to prep, I used to love the tomato... well, I don't know what the hell is was called. It was like a melon baller, but had teeth, and took the stem area out. Made my job so much easier. But I don't own one.
  3. That is very cool foodie. Good for them.
  4. My bet is none. You could only save paper with a close-packing arrangement on huge sheets of paper. It was a serious question, wasn't it? Unless you're talking about the "flo-thru" types. That's extra paper. Other than that, the round's the wasteful one. I hate plastic, and avoid it if at all possible. I NEVER buy ziplocks, but if something comes in one, I'll wash and reuse it. Too much plastic waste in the world.
  5. I kind of like clinketty clinking the sugar around the bottom of the glass.
  6. Weird. The one that struck me (didn't get through all of it) was the birthday cake with the date on it. I wonder if you could choose a food that you had a bad allergy to.
  7. I've never taken their advice. Sauce is my favorite food.
  8. To make my own meal, I wouldn't care if they cut everything for me. I think.

    BBQ Leftovers

If you have access to the NYT Cookbook, their Western Beef and Rice Casserole is pretty good. I made it with bits of leftover steak the first time, and it was fab. Since then it's been pretty good, but not as good as with the steak. I'm sure it would work nicely with BBQ.
  10. Sorry to post before going to the site, but my computer's so slow and I haven't had time to go to the library to peruse. BUT, If I were faced with a last meal in prison, I'd have to think long and hard about what they couldn't screw up. Macaroni and cheese? That's about the only thing I can imagine that can't go too wrong. Although I would request being able to cook my own last meal with ingredients I choose.

    Cleaning Mushrooms

Thanks torakris! Didn't even know this one was there! But It's no drool, and I couldn't figure that one out.
  12. Suzanne, excellent point, well said. I was stuck for words last night, but that's basically what I meant.
  13. I'm going to defend American cheese. Wrapped around a dill pickle? Call me white trash, it's a delite. Cheese Whiz, I'm not going to defend, but it is the traditional cheesesteak cheese. I would kill for olives of any sort. About fat-free...er...meringue? Ices? Bread?
  14. I will agree with Dave that it is sooo much easier to get and offer amazingly fresh produce etc. from farmer's markets in California. And a swillion times cheaper too.

    Mash

Sounds like an awful pain. Why don't you do it in advance to see if it works, and if worst comes to worst, you can do them over again on the day? Why do you want to do them in advance? No one to recruit at the time? To answer your question, no. I haven't tried it. But do tell how it works out.

    Cleaning Mushrooms

Thanks lou. But I imagine if you opened cans of Green Giant, you'd find not a grain of sand.(((((( )))))) That's a shudder emoticon.
  17. Good points Jaymes. My apologies!
  18. Or some people refer to it as "light cream." Light cream and half & half are different products.

    All About Cassoulet

Stellabella, any help? True chili isn't supposed to have beans, and chili con carne is supposed to really drive that home.
  20. Yeah - and around midnight, we sneak out and go TP someone's house. And then, at 2am, the boys come over and catch us in our nighties and we all squeal in mock horror. And then a few wussies fall asleep. Whereupon they get their bra put into the freezer. And their hand laid ever so gently into a bowl of warm water. Ah - the good ole' days. Okay, now you guys are freaking me out....

    Cleaning Mushrooms

I always wash my mushrooms. I used to wipe them off, but what a pain! I thought I was the only one on earth until I saw Sara Moulton do it. And now you guys! I DETEST crunching dirt when eating (or anytime). Ruins a couple of days for me.

    Popcorn at home

Good points, DtC ans SF. I just thought it would be cool to watch them ping-pzinging all over the oven. Plus watching them tumble out when the door's opened would seem luxurious. Erm... nevermind. I know! I love playing Real Genius!
  23. You almost made me spit my water onto the computer.
