I was looking at the recipes on PBS website today and Citrus Sweet Potato Purée with Pork Crackings caught my eye. The recipe did not look right (juice and zest of lyme, lemon, orange seemed to be too much for four sweet potatoes). I clicked on video and it is very different from the recipe and much more complex, it includes maple syrup and apple cider vinegar reduction that is poured on top of sweet potato purée prior to topping it with the cracklings. Video also includes instructions on making the cracklings. And she uses only a little bit of orange zest and juice in the video. Video is chefy and I like it. Does she have this recipe in the book? Is it like PBS written version or more like the video? http://www.pbs.org/food/recipes/citrus-sweet-potato-puree-with-pork-cracklins/

Risotto made with smoky chicken stock with sautéed chanterelles and a tiny bit of bacon. Oh, and there was freshly grated Parmesan mixed into risotto.

Ha ha! That will suit my husband just fine.

Pork chop, scrambled eggs, left over biscuit. We try to eat only two meals on weekends, hearty breakfast and early dinner (or late lunch).

My trusted fishmonger Jane was moved from Pentagon City Harris Teeter to another location to improve their fish department. Now buying fish at our Harris Teeter is like playing Russian roulette. Nobody knows (or will tell me) if the fish is fresh, previously frozen, when it came in, etc.. But something magical happened yesterday. I stopped at Clarendon Whole Foods and met David. David grew up in HI and his family is in fish wholesale business. David knows his fish! I bought beautiful swordfish belly that I marinated in sweet chili sauce and flash seared over high heat. Served with spaghetti squash. Looking forward to halibut cheeks that David promised to set aside for me on Wednesday!

The marketing of his own cookbook, and beyond
chefmd replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
I am reading a library copy right now. The writing is beautiful, I can hear Rob's voice. The photos are "I know it when I see it" kind of food porn. Growing up in Russia (USSR), we foraged a lot of ingredients. Mushrooms, berries, sorrel, etc. I was not fortunate enough to eat in Rob's restaurant but will be sure to visit his new place! -
Thank you for introducing me to Lucy Vanel. What a blog!

Don't know how long that turkey took, it was already in the smoker when we got there. Your estimate of 15 pounds seems to be about right.

A friend gave me a carton of eggs from her backyard chickens. Look at that bright tall yolk. Served with left over small pork chop but the egg was definitely a star!

Right. I woke up and checked my toes for the signs of gout!

Our beach house community had an annual "Turkey Smoker" event. The've being doing it for 27 years! Residents bring smokers, whatever food they want to smoke, snacks, drinks. I had too much food. Add to that a glass of wine, sunshine, wind, sounds of the ocean. So lunch was followed by a very decadent nap. Ribs, turkey, brisket, turkey breast, ribs, salmon, chicken.

I have not used pressure cooker since acquiring Instant Pot. The size of Instant Pot may be limiting for some but is perfect for my two person (most of the time) household. Stock, beans, grits etc..

Don't know if this was already posted, but here is the link to PBS website where they have a good number of her recipes posted. I was happy to see recipes for mashed rutabaga and tomato pie. Oh my! http://www.pbs.org/food/features/a-chefs-life-recipes

I am giving a talk on stroke risk factors tomorrow. Part of it touches upon diet and alcohol consumption. One drink a day for women and two drinks a day for is what's good for you. Five ounces of wine does not look like much. I started to measure the size of my martini glass and had to plead the 5th. Not to mention the steak...

That's funny. Mars does own Wrigley so you can at least chew gum after eating candy
