  1. Either would be excellent. Who do we cast as Steven?
  2. Ellen: You sure put the Adventure in "Adventures in Eating!" This is a wonderful piece. I'm wondering if the veg/mayo combo is a kind of post-Soviet Salade Russe? Edited to add: I hope you bought the hat!
  3. I have just ordered a copy of Ms. Whites's Brown Sugar, and will look for a good source for bubble wrap. I've navigated O'Hare with more fractious burdens than dozens of cookies!
  4. Outstanding list, Jamie! I have been guilty of (2) frequently, but am so far safe on the ketchup thing. Er...could you please expound a litle on how this came about? And, welcome to eGullet.
  5. Weclome to eGullet, VeryApe.
  6. How true. This is a terrfic idea. It's severly inpractical to ask for a complete catalogue of everyone's Permamnent Collection, but naming new additions makes sense. It adds to the vicarious thrill. 44,931.
  7. 44,921. Suzanne: You're a hard case! Yes, welcome megaira.
  8. I lost it right here. Thank you.

Dear h: Thanks for your contributions here, welcome to eGullet, and post more of your Good Stuff.
  10. You are so clever, Matthew! Rumour has it Dave has more thermometers and probes than other men have golf clubs and socks. Can't handle the shipping charges, though. These suckers are heavy!
  11. Good God, Archie, you really are the Science Guy! Thank you so much for this. I am sorely tempted to try . Really. Just can't think of a way to determine whether a pan has reached 600 degrees. Steel mill, perhaps?

    Dinner! 2003

For sure. The Style Czarina, the Irrepressible one, and their Crown Prince made us entirely at home, and I think none of us spared a breath from conversation except to eat. And, er, drink. The whole meal was outstanding, the salmon the best I've had for, literally, years. And thank you, Ma'am, for posting the name of that outstanding Brie. I will look for it. (Gee, can't imagine how I came to forget such details! ) Thanks also for refreshing my memory about Mrs. David's Mushrooms. An enchanted candlelit evening under a starry Southern California sky. It really doesn't get too much better than this.
  13. I have a beautiful set of heavy copper cookwear; yes, the kind that was hand-rubbed by French virgins. One teeny little problem: I haven't been able to use it for years. In my early days of becoming a cook, I (or he) didn't pay adequate attention to the instructions counselling the cook not to apply too much heat to an empty copper pan. Boy, that liquid tin sure looked pretty bubbling up and exposing the copper beneath. I'd like to use this stuff again, not simply polish it twice a year. Does anyone have a source for retinning copper in the Chicago (Richard M. Daley, Mayor) area? Or, all you Science Dudes, can this be done at home?
  14. 'Nuff said. I didn't know this, and might have to fill out an application this afternoon. jwagnerdsm: I had dinner at Cafe Baba Reba a couple of years ago. I don't have your Spanish travel background, so I have no means of comparison. What I do remember was tasty food, decent prices and a good time had by all. So I don't give diddley who owns it. Signed, Your fellow Rube
  15. Neil: Yes, please post them when you have the chance! And , pray God, the Tinkerbell picture turns out well. I don't think I've wanted a frock so badly in years. And yes, NSM, you are way, Way qualified.
  16. Fanning myself and panting for the opportunity, Jaymes! Write fast!

Humane trap and release in the local forest preserve, the little bastards. (Did the Sox win? Why not get the Brunswick Stew concession at Sox Park?)
  18. The temptation is great, Suzanne, but I know some folks here who could give even Jon a run for his money. Like you. (I'm a Suzanne Fan.)
  19. Speaking as the lucky recipient of some of guajolote's home roasted, I suggest that he get roasting and posting. I have tasted lots of great coffee in my life. G.'s was up in the top five.

Sissy boy. We'll get possum instead then. Or coon. Y'all could just bring down some of your pigeons, too. If there be rodents, possum, coon, pidgeons or elves in the stew, this Sissy Missy is gonna skip it. I'm fascinated by the existence of our own eGullet CI Test Kitchen---Dave, my brother Dean, and Dave's other brother, Dean. One thing, gentlemen: please don't eat so much DDD stew before the event that you can't bear the sight or smell come October.
  21. That was my intention, Jon. Go for it.
  22. They remind me of my Lancashire grandmother. Sigh.
  23. Welcome to eGullet, robkhoo--we won't tell the boss. 44, 830. 8.49 miles.
  24. Alex: How truly cool! Please report on the book when it arrives; I'd love to hear about it. Definitely worth it. Great cop.
