  1. i haven't heard the word "parlour" used by anyone under the age of 70 since about 1947. oddly enough.
  2. i must have walked past that place 5000 times and always wanted to duck in. if recall, it was one of the last businsses to leave 42nd street. that story was featured in the NYT if i recall.

    Homebrewers?

check it or chuck it? If you chucked it, I'm sad. I might've took it off your hands, cheap!! "chuck it," he clarified, 2 weeks later.
  4. my take on this: fat guy's book has a bunch of restaurants listed in it. this list will remain. fat guy wants a list for the book that will list any recent openings or closings that might be noteworthy. certainly closings of restaurants in his book would be of great concern. if anyone knows of any openings or closing, provide those restaurants to fat guy. easy-peasy.
  5. i was thinking of the one on b'way at 46.
  6. i'd be hesitant to send anyone to the chart house. although the view is brilliant, the food and experience can range from OK down to horrid. "fabulous," however, could definitely apply to cafe matisse.
  7. i'm assuming this is a BYO restaurant?
  8. i think fat guy didn't want to be confused with "steven a. shull," who penned the riveting Explaining Congressional-Presidential Relations: A Multiple Perspectives Approach (Suny Series in the Presidency.)
  9. i was thinking more along the lines of a lawsuit. or at the very least, relentless taunting.
  10. continuing to ignore... edit: sorry, wrong thread.
  11. if memory serves, the last 2 times he has not been there, but they were monday or tuesday nights. one of those nights, the place was simply overwhelmed (with only several tables full) and it took us a *very* long time to get out. i've been hesitant to return early in the week for fear of that happening again.
  12. china 46 is a favorite of many people here on egullet, and has been praised endlessly. the point is that if they are struggling, and i have no real evidence that they are, perhaps they are not able to perform as well as they have/can. increased patronage would ostensibly rectify this.
  13. you broke your promise of limiting yourself to only 2 posts per day. i think i speak for everyone when i say that we're not angry, just a little upset that you weren't able to fulfill that commitment.
  14. congrats. this is very exciting. i think you've ensured at least a few sales considering the readership of this site (not to mention your own).
  15. i've been getting some weird vibes from China 46 in Ridgefield. during the week, they seem to have a skeleton crew of disunterested guys waiting the tables. cecil is no where to be found. the food doesn't seem up to snuff. or perhaps this is a sign that they're doing really well and cecil doesn't have to be around. either way, it's a much better place when cecil is there. i'd certainly hate to see this place go.
  16. Hojo was one of the few places in that area that actually looked dirtier than McHale's. McHale's has now been upgraded one notch on the "digusting looking place" list. but i hear they have really good burgers, which i can say, with more than a bit of confidence, Hojo could never boast.

    Party food

ron, there have been a few threads on this with good ideas that might fit your criteria. searching on "hors" or "appetizers" might get you there. for me, pigs in a blanket are good even cold.
  18. cheater.
  19. champagne is such a cop-out. everything goes with bubbles. i'd venture to say that even Cheerios go with bubbles.
  20. with *any* food, not just chinese. well, as with anything, there are exceptions. i'm still trying to figure out how i managed to drink so much of it in my 20's, and with so many good meals. i must have been drunk.
  21. very sweet. the "bud of thailand" as i like to say. however, i like bud. and i love singha.

    Malee

i made it back to malee for a third time recently. larb ordered extra crazy thai spicy was suitably spicy, and very good. their version doesn't have as much lime juice as i'd like, but it was still quite good. pad thai. this was the first time i've had this dish here. i don't care what you say, pad thai is a *very* good thing. malee's version was right on the money. it leaned towards a lighter style, which i can appreciate. it wasn't all gloppy and sweet like you sometimes find. it was delicous. however, it wasn't served with a wedge of lime or lemon, which i found odd. garlic and black pepper chicken. a very plain looking dish, but it packs a lot of flavor. some version of this dish are very sweet. this was a lighter version, but was heavy on flavor. served with some brocolli. i'd order it again. the outside seating is very nice i think, especially if you like sitting outside. there are no cars and no people to deal with, as it's in a "corner." however, the trains whiz by about 10 feet away. to grumpy old bastards like myself, this can get annoying. however, the kids all loved it and looked forward to the next train. luckily for me, they are very short trains. byo. 13 bucks for each of the dishes mentioned above.
  23. singha will be good. as will any of the wines mentioned above with notable acidity, no oak, and slight sweetness. then again, i rarely drink anything else, with or without food. plotz, why would you say a slightly spicier wine is necessarily better in this application? surely other factors such as the producer would have a greater impact on a wine's food-pairing potential than just the grape, even though its name translates to "spice."
  24. maybe, but only if one if the restaurants isn't Snuffy's!!
