  1. From the show, the cookbook or the website? from the newest Gourmet, or F&W, or whatever one his mug plastered on.
  2. the food at emeril's restaurants seems to make "more sense" than what you see on TV. the TV show, as we all know, is entertainment. as for his cookbooks, i've had some success with his recipes, but i wouldn't/couldn't/didn't compare them with what i've eaten at 2 of his restaurants. TV is clearly entertainment. i don't care if your name is booby, wolfgang, or emeril. cookbooks, however, should possibly be critiqued at bit more, as they are ostensibly used by home cooks to make something decent every now and again. now that i think about it, i made a mario batali linguini bolognese this weekend. it tasted like boiled beef. perhaps that's how they eat it in italy. lesson: add some common sense to any recipe you're following.
  3. can i ask if this is a "financial" issue, or more of a "where can we eat at 4.30 or 5 o'clock" issue. that would help with recs.
  4. jhlurie's point is very valid: china 46 shines when you're not ordering run-of-the-mill "chinese" stuff. however, glancing quickly at the early bird menu, i think i can suggest Pork Chop Beijing Style and kong po chicken. do, however, try some other selections from their regular menu, if you can.
  5. shhhhh...i'm sure it's fine.
  6. China 46 in Ridgefield is now offereing an "early bird special" for 8.95 or so on weekdays. i'm not sure what it consists of, but the place has some brilliant food, and that's quite a deal.

ooo, and he takes the duck. -2 points.
  8. yeah, it's not classy like jimmy's corner. hey, uhhh, what about that *other* BBQ place, down on about 18th and park ave?? duke's it's called. i go there every now and again, and while i'm no bbq expert, it's a "pleasant" place. to me anyway.
  9. the clientele and staff, from my experience.

    Calories in wine

alright, it seems safe to assume that a glass of wine (assuming 4 or 5 glasses in a bottle), has about 100-150 calories. and it would make sense that wines with more residual sugar have more calories. my impression is that you would generally find more residual sugar in whites than in reds. my yogurt and granola in the morning weighs in at about 250 calories. therefore, if i skip breakfast, i can have 1 extra glass of red at dinner. port, however, is probably a no-no. thanks for the links and the comments.
  11. german rieslings. she just won't have it.
  12. but only to certain onions from what nick says? i know for a fact that yellow onions last, oh, about 2 years in the closet. vidalias, however, they go quick.

also, is alcohol, generally speaking, an appetite stimulant. obviously thc is, but i'm not sure about alcohol, especially in smaller doses. clearly if you're out at the pub all night, you can't wait to get your hands around a taylor ham egg and cheese sandwich (if you are in NJ), a slice of pizza (if you're in NYC), or a curry (if you're from somewhere else), but i think that's a side-effect not specific to alcohol itself.
  15. i've read that certain oils from nuts (walnut specifically), and possibly sesame oils, should be refrigerated to keep them from going rancid.

    Calories in wine

can anyone speak authoritatively on how many calories are in a bottle of wine? i'd say "glass," but that's rather vague. does it vary much between whites/reds?
  17. whoa whoa. some onions are treated in some way? and doesn't refrigeration take the "bang" out of onions? not a good thing. i'll just keep buying them and keep em out of the fridge.
  18. meaning?
  19. i, and everyone i know, refrigerate ketchup. the entire restaurant industry, however, does not.

    Veggies

double o, i'm not sure we're all considering "fries" to be "veggies." however, i do appreciate your definition!
  21. seems that was the better of the two options. company aside of course.
  22. not in the least. why would it. devoid of humor *and* common courtesy. bad combo. ediot: speelling.

  24. well, if there's one of even *reasonable* quality on the east side, it will be more convenient for me. this is why i'm asking.
