  1. Ohhhhh, MOLD!
  2. I searched for a thread for this topic and found none... I LOVE bonito flakes, but Im allergic to the smoke in them... What can I use in place of them in Dashi and other dishes that call for them? Fish sauce? Fish stock? The broth from a can of tuna? Also, for the sake of others, who out here still shaves their own every morning? And can foreigners buy whole, unshaved bonito?
  3. Everynight I convince myself that since my favorite type of anpan has a mochi and anko center that beans and rice make a complete protein and its therefore a low carb treat... Dont burst my bubble. lol
  4. Now I'm convinced that some of you are just 食べず嫌い tabezu girai "dislike without having tried" Why not try it today? ← Hiroyuki? Ill probably make it for myself with Cowboy Ketchup (Ketchup and hot salsa mix, used to be made by Omaha Steaks)
  5. COOL, Lotsa questions here... Kristin? How many times do your parents visit you? Do they refer to you as their Japanese daughter? Are the food courts there the same as they are here? And do you have a favorite recipe for Bibimbap? Ive wanted to try it but when I heard the bracken can cause stomach cancer over time I dont wanna get too addicted to it...
  6. Ive made Naporitan Spaghetti from a pouch mix and it was yummy... I love ketchup. But most people in the USA like yellow French's mustard on our hot dogs, as well as our soft pretzles. Alot of people look at you funny if you put only ketchup on a hot dog But my son loves that. I think Ill make him Omuraisu next time he asks for eggs.
  7. OMG that sounds good... Cowboy Omuraisu=BBQ sauce in place of ketchup
  8. Just so you can see the price of things here in the Philadelphia Area I scanned some of my reciepts the past month... http://i15.tinypic.com/2ed85rn.jpg
  9. Id imagine a TURDUCKEN in Japan is out the question? LOL <Sheepishly AND guiltily...
  10. http://www.kfc.co.jp/xmas2006/ ^^Kristin I swear thats so amusing! Especially the blue and white plate.
  11. OMG Thank You! I dont have a rice cooker but Walgreens (Pharmacy) has small tiny ones for 5 bucks that I could use and if damaged I wouldnt feel guilty tossing... BTW- GlorifiedRice is a Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) recipe consisting of rice, coolwhip, maraschino cherries, pineapple chunks, mini marshmallows and cream cheese OR sour cream. The cherries dye the rice a pretty pink. If you are ever in the Philly area go to Shady Maple Farmers Mkt for all the Pa Dutch food you can eat... (Stopping because Im seriously OT)
  12. BTW the difference in Deep Frying and Oven Frying is significant: http://onhealth.webmd.com/script/main/art....rticlekey=56575
  13. MMMMMMMMMM, Kristin that "sweet potato" thing on the bottom sounds yummy, Ill bet I can reduce the fat somewhat too... Its like a Twice Baked Dessert Potato. (might need to buy more Satsuma Imos) And I bought a Japanese cookbook that had Yokan made of Kabocha that didnt turn out (too much water) so its interesting to see that they make Yokan out of lots of things..
  14. Guys? Im sorry I didnt look to see if there was already a thread on this subject, forgive me. However, about number 2? Daigaku imo? I had gallbladder surgery a month ago and cant eat too much fatty fried foods (I ate too many Takoyaki a week out of the hospital and paid for it for a week, but it was worth it they were so good!) do you think oven "frying" would work? I really want number two since I had Pretz flavored this way and they were delightful...
  15. Okay I bought 2 nice sized Japanese Sweet Potatoes... Now what? What do I do with them thats most traditional?
  16. Crack Down on Sushi AP TOKYO (AP) - November 6, 2006 - Are the chefs slicing the raw tuna correctly? Is the rice sticky enough? Is that paprika in your sushi roll? Tokyo is launching a campaign to crack down on restaurants abroad that bill themselves as authentic Japanese - but fall short of culinary standards at home. A panel of food experts was appointed Thursday to discuss a certification system that would presumably certify restaurants that serve dishes served in the true Japanese tradition. Though short on specifics, the system would promote "authentic Japanese culinary culture" abroad, according to the Agriculture Ministry. "There are many restaurants overseas that call themselves Japanese, yet use culinary techniques and ingredients far removed from those of authentic Japanese food," said a ministry statement. <snip> Read the rest here: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=bizarre&id=4731642
  17. I wish we had granny smith over here... good apples for baking in Japan, that is one of the things I have always meant to take notes on but I never do. ← Kristin? You have a backyard, have your family in Ohio send you some Granny Smith seeds and start introducing the neighbors to Granny Smith...
  18. Helen? Does Japan pick and hold mass quantities of underripe fruit and hold them just above freezing and gas them to quick ripen them before market like the USA does? I think thats why we have alot of crappy produce on the market cheap in the USA. If I want good peaches I have to buy Harry and Davids Oregold Peaches or for awhile I was buying Saturn/UFO peaches but they started to pick those early and gas em too and its back to Harry and David... Im convinced that this treatment is what produces mealy fruit... UFO/Saturn Peaches
  19. How about making " bread crumbs" out of them and adding sweet spices and dipping fruit in egg and "breading" it and deep frying it and serving it with ice cream...
  20. Is it true that all Asian baked goods are made with Sake Lees as leavening? I just gluttonly ate two Anpans (one regular and one with an inner mochi layer w/ almond slices on top) and I cant detect a regular yeasty bread smell. And anpans are sooo soft...Softer then even American Wonderbread
  21. OMG, that lil doggy bento is adorable! Kristin? Are 7-11s there bigger size wize then the 7-11s here? Or are they just jam packed? I wish U.S. 7-11s had more but we have Wawas in the northeast to compensate.
  22. hhhhmmm! I remember ALWAYS buying a strawberry shortcake from Kyj's bakery in Brookhaven Pa before driving to my grandmas house on Christmas eve. Maybe its a Russian Immigrant thing? BTW I met Colonel Sanders as a child.... ← By strawberry shortcake, torakris meant Japanese strawberry shortcake, that is, strawberry sponge cake. ← Yeah, Kyjs was more of a spongecake then usual shortcake. But posters were wondering where the Japanese got the idea that Americans had strawberry shortcake for Christmas and I added that my family always bought one on Christmas eve... Might have been a total coincidence, maybe not.
  23. Dont forget the Corn Dogs, American Indian Maiz (corn) Pudding, Corn Pone, Sweet Corn Cake (ala Chi Chis restaurant), Hoecakes, Creamed Corn, Spoon Bread etc... I really want that corn bread that Kristin posted. Corn is great in everything IMO I will mention however, that Im ashamed and disturbed that Ive been seeing alot more Japanese products using CORN SYRUP in them. Im sure the greedy USA companies have pushed it on you to use in your products and it is truly the scourge of mankind. Using Corn Syrup vs Cane Sugar has made Americans fat because for some reason corn syrup doesnt make you feel full. It doesnt trip your fullness switch and you just keep eating it. Whereas cane sugar does trip the switch. It made me sad to see it in Japanese products now...

  25. Kristin? MOST Christians dont know the true meaning behind Christmas. Santa, a Tree, Presents etc are Pagan symbols. The Christians took the Pagans holidays over to seem more friendly and similar. Same with Easter Eggs and Bunnies. LOL, where in the Bible did Jesus say..."On the date I rose from the dead you shall go forth and eat ham and potato salad and horseradish with beets!!!....and always bite the chocolate bunnies ears off first!!!" (???) Christians have no true idea when Jesus' birthday really was, so they picked December 25th to make it easier to convert the Pagans to Christianity since a Pagan holiday already existed on that day... BTW Kristin? What do people do in Japan for Halloween?
