  1. This is so interesting to me... How much money do women spend on Valentines Day in Japan? I live near the oldest chocolate factory in the USA (NOT Hersheys) Ashers and I buy chocolate lollipops for my sons class and teachers for each holiday and those cost $2.50 a pop. It gets expensive and my sons class is only 8 kids and 4 teachers. OY! Kristin? Do you have this years KFC and 7-11 Christmas pages?
  2. About the American brown rice mochi from Grainaissance? They suggest putting it in a WAFFLE IRON and making waffles. They also have a CHOCOLATE FUDGE BROWNIE flavor. Whole Foods Market sells it.
  3. The frozen IKEA meatballs are great for recipes where you dont want to have an Italian taste. Ive bought Swedish dill seasoned crayfish there too and Lutefisk too.
  4. Helen? Teachers come to your house? For what? Is this a standard thing?
  5. Inspired by thoughts of takikomi gohan, I am currently eye-ing an IH rice cooker from Zojirushi. I am tempted by the induction heating and the brown rice GABA feature (pre-germination) they have on the cooker, but am wondering 1) if the feature really works: "...a newly discovered way of cooking brown rice to “activate” it and increase naturally occurring gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an amino acid in brown rice believed to have health giving properties such as lowering blood pressure, improving kidney function and relieving stress. The brown rice is “activated” by soaking the rice at 104°F for 2 hours before the actual cooking begins. 2 hours is all it needs for germination? Hmmm... Back to google - see if what other companies are peddling these kinds of features. ← GABA is the substance your body releases when you take Xanax or Valiums...
  6. Years ago a friend and I were locked in the walk in fridge of the restaurant we worked at as a joke. They turned off the lights and we looked down and the shrimp in the basins were GLOWING in the dark! Ocean Dumping and Pollution is fun, huh?
  7. 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my son, I wanted to get lots of ethnic baby food before he was born so I could create a diverse palate in him... I spent lots of time on the phone attempting to get German, British, French baby food, without a computer, to no avail. Dejected, I called foreign directory assistance for the last time and asked for Heinz corporation in Japan and I casually mentioned to the directory assistance operator what I wanted it for, and she told me I was a horrible bad mother and I was sick! Seeing all these nice foods in this thread I just dont understand how feeding my child any of it is sick?
  8. You need one of these things... http://www.nesco.com/products/?category=700&subcat=100&id=66
  9. I know! It is very good! And Americans should take a lot more from the Japanese as far as foods are concerned... (other things too!)
  10. Sheena Greena? Quicktime never alerts you when it needs updating. Go to their website and download QT 7.0 and install it and you will then be able to see the BentoTv video...
  11. I just bought the egg molds on eBay on a buy it now thingy. There are more 4 mold sets available...
  12. OMG those egg molds are precious! Look at this cloth kids play bento: http://www.almasdesigns.com/store/index.cf...ushi_Box_18.htm
  13. This is a sampling of some of the snacks I bought recently http://i13.tinypic.com/2e2ffgg.jpg Im trying the Natto again...
  14. Yes, it was Japanese. I held on to the clear syrup packet for years until it started turning orange and I tossed it. It was the best quality Fruits Mitsumame I ever had in the can.
  15. Are you sure that the other one was a red bean syrup, not red bean jam (an or anko in Japanese)? ← No. I just ate an anpan and it was not anko like the anpan but a syrupy redbean syrup with very well cooked beans floating in it (about 4 beans) (actually I just had 2 anpans! )
  16. I discovered my first Asian Grocers at age 20 in Norristown, Pa... I bought Botan rice candy, blocks of mochi, and canned Mitsumame. I love Mitsumame. I can get two brands at Assi Plaza or H-Mart now, but miss the brand I originally bought and ate, can anyone help? It had a plastic cap over the can and under the plastic cap was two packets of syrups. One was clear syrup and the other was a red bean syrup. Anyone have a clue which brand has those characteristics? Are there any other varieties of Mitsumame other then the usual?
  17. I wanted some of those so I tried to find them by searching Hamamatsu and found these interesting nightime cookies made out of Eelbone Powder, Flour, Sugar, Butter and sometimes Garlic... http://www.shunkado.co.jp/unagipai/unagipai_top.htm (Wondering if Kristins had them) EDITED to add, I really miss these senbei that tasted like Okonomiyaki, those were my faves.
  18. Hiroyuki? Thank God! I thought it was just me. I've made Oden 3 times and I didn't like it any of the three except for the Chikwa. I bought the "Oden Kit" from the Asian Mkt though so maybe that is why. There is just an aftertaste to the lot of it that I don't enjoy. Maybe its the burdock?
  19. I thought it was just me. I like a Kamaboko slice in soup but cannot eat too much. I bought the white one with the pink swirl to add to my sons ramen ( I always add shredded scrambled egg to his ramen for extra protein) but he didnt wanna eat it.
  20. Hello, I have been (unsucessfully) trying to make Konnyaku Jelly for 3 weeks now. Since it's illegal to sell it here, I've been trying to make it myself. I Googled konjac powder and initially couldn't find any in bulk. So I went to the healthfood store and bought glucomannan gel caps and emptied them into a little tupperware cup and followed the recipe on the REDMAN Konnyaku Powder Website and it never gelled (I did it 3 times) it just got like a thin pudding. I tried the recipe on THIS PAGE and nothing happened either. I then bought a bag of konjac powder from konjacfoods.com and started my quest all over again. This time with the bag konjac powder it got way too thick too soon and never "boiled". Im at a loss as to what to try next. I LOVE konnyaku jellies. The FDA or Customs accidently let a shipment of Konnyaku Jelly Sticks into the country and I snapped up 4 bags and I only have one bag left. What am I doing wrong? Does the Konnyaku Powder sold in Asia have extra ingredients (like calcium) or is Konnyaku always "iffy" to make?
  21. D'oh! I should have thought of that - it would be similar to making tempura ice cream. Thank you for the link, Hiroyuki! Now I'll have something new to experiment with later this week. ← Oh, if you do please post pictures! Daifuku are so easy (and relatively cheap) to get so I never bother trying to make them, maybe someday.... ← I wonder if you freeze the fruit inside the whipped cream in an Aebleskivver pan then make thin Mochi "sheet circles" between two sillicone sheets in a tortilla press, then wrap the mochi circles around it, if THAT would make a nice Daifuku? I live in the greater Philadelphia Pa area and I havent seen Daifuku in H-mart, Assi Plaza or Kobawoo. Now, after reading this thread I wish Id see the chocolate ones Torakris had, here. BTW- the Aebleskivver pan would make great home made Takoyaki... Here is what they look like LINKLINK (Torakris? Is this okay as a first post?)
