  1. Kathy, The last time I had the dreamfields, I was okay. The first time my BF had it, he was out of ketosis. But then, he didn't really look at the "serving size" and ate nearly half the box. When I had it last, I ate the serving size. I too am confused how the figure out the carbs on that..by going on nutritional guide, it would appear that there are more, but they have some formula for figuring it out. I know on some of the low carb boards, there is much debate over that. I think if you were following the true Atkins plan, you should not eat that pasta until you are in "maintenance" mode. But I agree, its great for a treat every now and then. I've been really bad this weekend. I went to bunco on Friday night, she had steak and salad, great! no problem. But then she had this and well, I couldn't leave well enough alone. Make that with dreamfields, since everything else is legal, and that would be good! Then last night I went to a girlie dinner that we do with our friends and of course, they had Martha Stewarts mac and cheese, which is another one of my favorites. I don't feel too bad, because I enjoyed every little bite ful of carbs that got stuffed in my mouth. I'll just get right back on the horse today and this week.
  2. MizDucky, thanks for the information regarding lesbians and weight issues. You made a comment regarding weight watcher meetings for lesbians. At least here in Sacramento, we have a neighborhood that is dubbed "Lavender Heights" and it is primarily an gay/lesbian community with many businesses, restaurants and bars that are owned and operated by the members of the community. There is an old victorian house that they call the Lambda house, that is sort of a community center and they hold gay/lesbian alcoholic anon meetings and weight watcher meetings. Not sure if that's important, but did want to share the diversity in another town.
  3. When I checked this morning, I was still in the pink! I only had one tortilla too. One thing that I have noticed on this diet with regards to adding in carby foods, is that the first time I add something back, like the tortillas, I went out of ketosis, same with the first time I drank wine. Now that I've had those items I don't seem to fall out again. I don't know if there is a correlation or not. I did have a few carbs for lunch today. I went to Fresh Choice, had a monster salad, a few spoonfuls of a flavorless soup, 3 of their meatballs in tomato sauce, couldn't resist trying their macaroni and cheese (maybe had 3 forkfuls, small) and then when I went to get my sugar free jello that was labeled low carb, I saw some warm gingerbread squares, that were just really needed a small taste...so I couldn't resist. I ate about a third of the square, which was really small. And it was really good. Still in ketosis!
  4. Yes, I do. I guess the main reason I do now is that when I introduce a new type of food, like last night the low carb tortillas, I'll check several hours later to see if I am still in ketosis, and then know if that food product is too carb heavy for me or not. I am also a "results" person and the theory of the strips is that if you turn it pink, then you are allegedly burning fat, so it's encouraging me to keep eating this way, since I am "burning fat" when I turn the stick pink. I know that there are many opinions of the strips, they aren't 100% accurate, but you can see that when you eat alot of carbs (ie: Thanksgiving, Christmas, I ate alot) they weren't turning pink, so I know to back off. Maybe others can give their opinions about the strips as well. Hope that helps.
  5. Shelby, I'm doing low carb, and I when I started, I had to force myself to eat breakfast, since that is the recommendation. In the last couple of months, I have stopped, because, I typically am not hungry in the morning, and can go until afternoon without food. Yesterday, I didn't get to eat lunch until almost 2pm, which is later than normal, and I was hungry, but yes, I can go longer without food, then with, and I am still losing weight. It goes against conventional wisdom, like you said.

    Dinner! 2008

It's more reduced carb than dead low carb, but it's really good - I'll PM you the "recipe"! Marcia. ← Thanks!

    Dinner! 2008

Marcia I know you do low carb, I'd love your broccoli cheese soup recipe please? Thanks!
  8. I have some sharfenberger (sp?) dark in my fridge, cut into small hunks (maybe the size of a little larger than a pea). The past couple of nights, I have had a couple bites, and I am still in ketosis (since that is how I measure my weight loss.) Those small pieces, really give me the craving that I need and I don't feel the need to inhale the whole thing. Tonight's dinner: Chicken fajitas...marinated chicken breasts with peppers and onions in lime juice, a little tequila, jalapenos, cilantro, garlic, cumin, s&p. I'll have one carb controlled tortilla that is 7 grams per tortilla. If I am still hungry, I'll go the chicken/stuff alone. I'll top with salsa, sour cream and avocado. I do have to be careful of the tortillas, since sometimes they knock me out of ketosis. I am hungry and looking forward to dinner. P.S. I just got my big bag of carbquick bake mix today (ran out of my box)...really wanted to make impossible cheeseburger pie (from bisquick) with it this week, but the damn oven is broken until maybe the 17th. Still waiting on that book.
  9. Great start to your weight loss blog..as I know, it isn't easy, and it's great you guys found a way to make it work for you. Mizducky..are the shirataki (sp?) noodles made out of tofu? I heard that they are a great substitute for pasta, if you are watching carbs. I have yet to experiment with them yet, but plan on it. I guess you have to rinse them and then par boil to get the smell/fish taste off? I agree with the comment upthread regarding the scale. Since I have started on my weight loss, I try to only look at the scale once a week. I do it at the same time every week, that way I have a better idea of what's going on. It's interesting how you can weigh yourself at 7am, drink no water, use the bathroom, walk around, weigh yourself again and be up .5 lbs or down .5lbs. My BF can fluctuate 5-10 pounds on a day to day basis. Of course it's water, but that would frustrate me. That's why its once a week for me. Blog on and have fun!
  10. It does come up at that price, but I went through and got one of the used/new from other buyers at the cheaper price. Of course, you have to wait forever and a day to get it. I ordered it on the 29th of December. I wouldn't have paid that much for that book without much more knowledge. I'll keep you posted.
  11. I am so happy to have found a low carb link on egullet. I started Atkins in July, and have lost about 20lbs. This is probably the first holiday season that I have encountered, where I didn't gain any weight. I didn't lose a lot (maybe collectively 4 pounds throughout the season, off and on) but didn't gain. I also did indulge in some of my favorite carb loaded foods on special days. Now that the holidays are over, I am back on track. I think that is the good thing about Atkins, you can have a bad day, but get back on the horse the next day, with hopefully minimal consequences. I just ordered this book from Amazon: "A Complete Low Carb Lifestyle: An Executive Chef's Low Carb Lifestyle Culinary Guide" Gregory Pryor C. E. C.; Hardcover; $14.99 I guess he was the exec. chef for Atkins. He's also the guy that moderated the forums sometimes regarding Crabquick bake mix. I haven't received the book yet, but when I do, I'll let you all know how it is. Last night, we made a rendition of a favorite soup. We call it Leeky Sausage Soup. The way we modified it was to not use potatoes (well we used 2 small red potatoes, which in the end didn't really add anything, since they pretty much melted down) an extra pound of sausage extra spinach in addition to the chard The store was out of leeks, so we used 3 bunches of green onions. Overall, it was really good and very filling. I really only could eat a half of a bowl. Hoping to hear more great ideas from this thread!

Shelby, I am interested in how you got your mozzarella to make that dish. A friend of mine had some recently, with prosciutto ham and they were good.

I think that rocket is another term for arugula, if I am not mistaken.
  14. Racheld, care to share that recipe? That sounds good. Thanks in advance.
  15. I've never been a "baking" kind of person at Christmas, at least not in the last several years. I too, haven't been in the mood, not depressed, just not in the mood. I guess in my older years, I'd rather celebrate family and friends when I want, than a forced holiday..........I guess a big bah humbug from me.
  16. very cool tortilla press. They look great.
  17. i just did a search on my dvr for "Anthony Bourdain" iinstead of "No Reservations" like someone had suggested, and it shows the show at 9am (pacific time) on travel channel on Monday the 17th if anyone is interested.
  18. This seems like the type of hearty dish that could be eaten wrapped in a sturdy green like a napa cabbage leaf and some "eternal cucumbers" folded up with it. I'm off to the little Mexican mercado Monday with the big bins of dried chilis. Thank you Bruce! ← That sounds great, thanks for the suggestion
  19. Personally, I can't stand sleeves past my mid arm when I am cooking. Short sleeves if it isn't cold, long rolled up if it's a little chilly. It bugs me to watch people like umm Rachael Ray with sleeves that go all the way to her wrists. I can't imagine how gross that has to get. I am constantly rinsing my hands off, get my hands into the food, depending on what I am cooking, and that would bug the crap out of me.
  20. I can't see if this show is on anymore..does anyone know if it will replay?
  21. I too, have all All Clad stainless. I only use barkeepers friend and it works great! When my pots were brand new, I was cooking some onions for french onion soup, went to watch tv, fell asleep (ok, a couple of drinks may have been involved), needless to say,the onions burned to a crisp in the brand new pan. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get the pan cleaned, but bar keepers friend was the friend that helped me the most. I ended up going on line and buying a case of it, since it is much cheaper to do so that way.
  22. Jennifer and Bruce Thanks so much for your pictures and commentary. Excellent. Since I am doing Low Carb right now, I do miss the tortillas, but am going to keep some of this in mind for my "cheat days". I think that it was Ann T that showed a really cool tortilla press a while back. I had bought a heavy plastic one at a Mexican market a while back, and just using the Masa flour and water, it made okay tortillas, a little thick. This one seems to make good ones, judging by the stainless steel plates it has and the cast iron, and the weight would result in a thin tortilla.. I'll probably buy this one in the near future. Let me know if I am off base on this. I hope that you'll continue this thread, since so far, I am wiping drool off my keyboard.
  23. good god! That looks wonderful. I want some right now.

    Dinner! 2007

Last night, I roasted a chicken that was stuffed with garlic, onions and lemons and then smothered in butter that was mixed with rosemary and thyme. Half way through the cooking time, I had come across a pan in the upper oven with bacon fat on it from earlier made bacon, so I decided to pour that over the chicken. Here is a piece of the breast, with a perfect crispy skin.. Along side of this, we enjoyed roasted mushrooms that were also added to the chicken at the half way point. They were tossed with thyme and a garlic/basil grapeseed oil I had from a winery a couples months back. Lastly, I saw the Barefoot Contessa this weekend, making a cauliflower gratin, so I adopted that recipe, only used one tablespoon of flour, used cream instead of milk and didn't add the bread crumbs. It was really really good.
