    The spice of life

I like the 'basics' - cinnamon, garlic, nutmeg, rosemary, paprika... (on a random side note - did you know that if you inject nutmeg into your bloodstream, it can be fatal? not that you WOULD ever have reason to inject it but...i read that factoid somewhere and was surprised)

    Toast toppings

not at all! i'm looking for anything and everything that people think to put on their toast
  3. What are things you enjoy spreading on/topping your toast with? Aside from the ever-popular butter...

    Chili con Carne

can anyone recommend a yummy - and fairly easy - chili recipe?
  5. the first thing that came to mind was the hale and hearty soups on madison and 47th. relatively cheap, good soups, and a great salad bar. enjoy
  6. no, i'm not european and it didn't offend me personally, but you could have left it out, or just said europeans. just bothersome because it seems like with your response to every suggestion on here, some little snippy, snide comment is injected. i'm over it - lets not let this continue and ruin the point of this thread, please...
  7. Was the 'eurotrash' comment really necessary? Couldn't you have just left your 'review' at '...the clientele's good for people watching'...?

    Dinner! 2007

does anyone have a fairly easy recipe for chili?
  9. Sometimes nothing makes me happier than a chunk of Cracker Barrel Vermont Sharp cheddar cheese
  10. I am going to give one more suggestion, in the hopes that it doesn't get shot-down by anyone else on the boards, which seems to be happening to myself and others lately. Barolo. It's on West Broadway (in Soho), and is amazing. I had the greatest business lunch there a couple of weeks ago and had their green apple ravioli in lamb ragu. YUM. The atmosphere is very nice, especially if it's a business lunch or dinner. And the food is fabulous, including the risotto (which they're known for).
  11. What are some more ideas of foods, chefs, countries, new cooking gadgets, ingredients that people would like to see featured on a weekly food tv show?
  12. Sorry you feel that way. I, and friends of mine, have been there many times and have always had wonderful meals.
  13. If you're looking for great Chinese food, I recommend Excellent Dumpling House on the border of Soho and Chinatown (one block south of Canal St, on Lafayette St, I believe). At first glance the place looks run-down and cheesy but once inside, the food is incredible and the service is great too! We've eaten there many times and have never had to wait longer than 5 minutes for our food, entrees included! I definitely recommend checking it out - it's worth it (and cheap, too!)
  14. I just thought of another great little place. There is a wonderful little French restaurant on Avenue B/10th Street, called 26 Seats. The food is fantastic (I have been there several times, as have some of my friends and coworkers, and we all adore it), and it is very reasonably priced. But be sure to call and make a reservation because like the name says, they only have 26 seats
  15. Gus' Pickles are fabulous, and really well-priced, too. You can get a whole jar of them and keep them in your fridge for a long time...they're always good for a quick snack!
  16. Interesting...because like I said, I worked at DD one summer several years ago and always bought their bagged coffee with my discount and loved it. And nobody ever complained after buying it, either. Good stuff. And 1/3 the price of Starbucks (which I happen to dispise). Plus, John Goodman is the DD voice now - how can you go wrong when Dan Conner is endorsing a product?!
  17. Sunrise Market on Broome St. in NYC has a fantastic selection of all kinds of snacks and treats, including a large selection of Pocky and Pretz flavors (Pretz being the cracker-type equivalent of Pocky). My favorite was the french toast/maple syrup flavor
  18. My absolute favorite quick-and-easy pasta dish is so simple. Make tortellini (I prefer spinah/ricotta tortellini but any kind will work...) and then toss them in Wishbone Italian salad dressing. YUM
  19. Does anyone know if they sell them at the Trader Joes in NYC? My other option would be to order them from the place in Montana that makes them...or go back to Amsterdam!
  20. I made an amazing banana cream pie from scratch (except the pie crust, that was frozen). It turned out so well and now that I know how to make the creamy pudding filling, I can make any type of pudding I want If I can find where I wrote the recipe, I'll post it on here for all to use if they'd like...
  21. Well apparently you should listen to Nathan since he seems to be the leading authority on all things NYC. I didn't say you had to choose my places, they were just ones that I happen to enjoy very much.
  22. I live in NYC and work in food television so I could provide lots of suggestions for you! A few that come to mind are: Maya - wonderful authentic Mexican food (slightly high-end, definitely not a taco stand) on 64th St/1st Ave Fiamma Osteria - delicious Italian-influenced food in Soho (Spring Street) Lombardi's - if you are looking for a quick meal and not too pricey - and you like pizza! - this place is amazing (Spring St/Mott St) Smith and Wollensky's - amazing steaks, if you eat red meat (49th St/3rd Ave) Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!
  23. Maya is a fabulous high-end Mexican restaurant on the UES (64th St/1st Ave). There is always a long wait so I recommend reservations. They bring freshly-made guacamole (some of the best I've ever had!) to your table and continue to refill it like it was the bread basket. The food is incredible - it is hearty Mexican food on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from tacos and burritos. The decor is lovely and the prices are very reasonable for NYC. Enjoy
  24. I happen to adore Dunkin Donuts coffee. I worked there one summer and became addicted to their hazelnut coffee. McD's, I'm not so fond of. But DD gets two thumbs up in my book
