  1. speaking of uncommon grounds - has anyone been there recently? is it even open? any good? and has anyone tried the new pizza place on henry street, oven? i know it only opened within the past couple days...was just curious if anyone had any thoughts on it!
  2. thanks guys! some of these sound really great. i haven't had the chance to bake any yet, but am taking note of these and am hoping to try one or two this coming weekend. if i get around to it, and am successful, i'll post pictures thanks again!
  3. Lately, I am on a baking kick. I'd like to bake chocolate chip cookies but don't have a good 'from scratch' recipe. I was hoping someone on eGullet might have a good (and fairly easy) recipe to share!
  4. good to know, thanks.
  5. i'll ask again.... has anyone been to busy chef? how is it?
  6. is the busy chef any good?
  7. I am a sucker for a good chicken pot pie. It' a comfort food for me. As a kid, my brothers and I ate Mrs. Budd's - in the yellow box with the cellophane window so you could see the pie inside. It brings back good childhood memories. And they recently began carrying Mrs. Budd's in the grocery store near my apartment, so yes - I'm very happy I was just wondering if anyone else had any favorite types or brands of pot pies? Or if you have your own recipes for making them?
  8. the 7-11 right across the street from my building (82nd st/3rd ave in NYC) sells them! i just walked in this evening and saw them there for the first time. so of course i had to stock-up
  9. I'm new to the area. Can anyone recommend restaurants, places to shop for ingredients, or places that provide prepared foods and desserts?
  10. i can tell you that at the pinkberry in my neighborhood, my boyfriend got a medium plain and it came to $5.31 after tax. no toppings. WITH toppings it's over $7. way overpriced, especially since they swirl the yogurt from the machine into the cup, creating a big hole of empty space in the middle. really, you're getting the amount of yogurt in a small cup, only in a medium cup so it looks bigger. rip-off
  11. i have a new japanese snack obsession. my office is right down the street from sunrise market, on broome street in soho, and i go there frequently. i have found these thin, salty rice crackers that i can't seem to get enough of! they come in huge bags, for only $2 a bag. seriously though, i could go through a whole bag in one sitting if i really wanted to... so yummy!
  12. when i was little, my dad would take my younger brothers and i to mcdonald's for breakfast one sunday a month. it was our little dad-bonding treat. we usually went with family friends of ours - a dad and his three kids (who, coincidentally, are the exact ages of my brothers and i). i always ordered the same thing. pancakes, sausage, two hashbrowns, and extra syrup. oh, and one of those orange juices served in those plastic tubes with the foil top you had to pull off. back in the day, mcdonald's had some quality to it. the old-school breakfasts were the best. mcgriddle? really? i mean come on...
  13. you must must MUST try 'abe and louie's' on boylston street. the best steakhouse i have ever been to (and i've been to many, since it is an addiction of my family's). coincidentally my boyfriend was the chef there several years ago. but they have FABULOUS food, a very nice atmosphere, and wonderful waiters who will recommend their favorite dishes, tell you which wines/beers go best with what food, and search all around the diningroom/kitchen to find the last piece of their delicious raisin pumpernickel flat bread (YUM). seriously though - if you eat meat, particularly steak, this is a must!
  14. if you're talking about the farm tony visits, it's 'bobolink dairy'. its website is www.cowsoutside.com
  15. I love Dock's, on 40th/3rd. It's a seafood/grill. It's a little bit more expensive than what you specified in your original posting but it's great for a date, or a nice night out, or taking your family to dinner, etc. My boyfriend lives a few blocks south of you - I'd love to know what restaurants you find that you enjoy. And I'll fill you in on more when I actually take a look at his neighborhood a bit more in depth. Welcome to NYC!
  16. I love warmed potato chips. When they're all nice and warm, I keep it simple by dipping them in ketchup. Tastes like you're eating freshly-cooked french fries
  17. maybe raji was asking if his question was rude because he wanted to be polite? ever think of that? some people feel uncomfortable discussing money...
  18. raji - i was just about to type the exact same thing. i was thinking about doing something like this with my boyfriend for his birthday. he's a chef so i know he would appreciate it. i just don't want to blow my year's salary on one meal

    Frozen Pizza

I just discovered my new favorite frozen pizza, perfect for nights when I get home late from work or just don't have a lot of time to make or order something. It's Lean Cuisine Chicken and Roasted Garlic pizza. It comes in a square shape, and has very thin crust. It's DELICIOUS and it's impossible to tell that it's supposed to be 'healthy'.
  20. Yup, baking away! Just made three batches of my chocolate covered candied matzah last night! I'm still more than willing to give the recipe to whoever is interested...just PM me
  21. I made a fabulous apple cinnamon crisp last night. My mom gave me her recipe, which was originally for peach crisp (cobbler), but since I can remember we have always substituted apples instead of peaches. In any case, it came out FABULOUSLY! The apples were cooked perfectly so they were just soft enough but still slightly crunchy. And the crumbly topping was so delicious - right when it came out, I picked a couple of hot little crumbles off the top. YUM I'd be happy to give anyone the recipe, just PM me!
  22. i'm fortunate enough to be dating a chef, and pies are one of his specialties! some of my favorites that he makes are... -strawberry rhubarb -apple cinnamon cranberry -banana cream -chocolate mint -oreo -blueberry (and he makes his own ice cream to top it with!)
  23. my parents just bought a condo in great barrington and i love visiting them simply because of rubiner's and baba louie's!
  24. was it really that hard to figure out?
  25. Wasn't trying to make Tasti-D a substitute for PinkBerry. PinkBerry was never in my routine in the first place. As for the calories in Tasti-D - I have lost 13lbs in the past two months, while eating a cup of Tasti-D every day. So it can't be that unhealthy, in the long run... (And that article was from 2002? It's now 2007...maybe things have changed in 5 long years. Just a thought)
