    Dinner 2018

@suzilightning, I haven't had that in years. I was introduced to it by a Memphis native many years ago and I know if I made it today even in all of its trashiness (in the best way possible) I'd eat WAY too much. Of course I could say I'm eating it in honor of my friend Randall and enjoy the memories.
  2. Minnesota and likely Wisconsin. When my husband worked for Land O Lakes many years ago he was horrified when served pie with cheese the first time. All opportunities to support the dairy farmers were promoted. I like cheese with a fresh apple, so the idea of cheese worked into the crust does sound tasty.
  3. Ack, to add to the stress of food prep, I'm sick. I had to write out a list for hubby to get some items since I planned to start some things this weekend and freeze to make the actual day run a bit smoother. I am making a tomato bisque and mushroom/shallot/herb dressing (I've made the dressing before and I know it reheats well). I also planned to make turkey gravy with purchased extra wings (looked for them on Monday and didn't see any, getting nervous). Balsamic/honey roasted carrots. Will be interesting to see what he comes home with (despite my detailed list organized by location in the store), I am really trying to avoid the supermarket this weekend. My sister is bringing a spinach-based veg side dish and Mom is making twice-baked potatoes. Apple pie will be purchased from a local farm that makes good ones. Ice cream. Perhaps Ghiradelli brownies (box of mix at the ready in the pantry!).
  4. I usually have around 6 yogurts in the fridge at any time and I will eat them based on expiration date. Since DH will only take what is on the front edge of the shelf. And his yogurt consumption ebbs and flows.
  5. Roasted seaweed snacks are pretty common in our local supermarkets, they show up the in the Natural/Health food aisle, or the Asian food aisle. I like them, although some of the brands are quite greasy. Several years ago I was treated to a sushi lunch by my boss in NYC and we got a seaweed sampler platter as an appetizer/salad course, it's interesting to try the different textures. Hijiki is probably the one we see most often in our local Japanese restaurants (cold salad).
  6. As I was the one who originally posted, I will update to say that I will not be having a guest with gluten issues, so I no longer need suggestions, but thanks to all.
  7. as the Chipotle thread looked like it was starting to veer to "non-Mex" discussion, I thought I'd open up a new thread. There have been a bunch of quick serve/fast casual chains (of varying sizes) opening near my home an office. There is a local burrito chain Bubbakoo's, which started in NJ in 2008; it seems to be a "design your own burrito/bowl/taco salad, etc." Haven't been yet, just opened about a month ago near my house. The Simple Greek is (as the name alludes to) Greek style, start with a bowl or pita, add your protein, etc. Haven't been there yet, but I do go to Zoe's, which has a lot of vegetarian options and is marketed as "Fresh Med". There are places specializing in Poke Bowls near my house and near my office, which also offer some "cooked" food options for those not sure about raw fish. The QC varies day to day in a lot of these places, but as someone who seeks "healthier" and vegetarian options, it is nice that there ARE more options to choose from.

  8. Not a bad idea, I can just separate a small amount of the stock. Will keep it in mind if needed.
  9. Of the "fast casual" type Tex-Mex chains, I liked Baja Fresh the best. Unfortunately they closed the one near my office a couple of years ago. They have a fresh salsa bar with 6 types of salsa, usually hot, med, mild (green?), pico, and 2 seasonals (IIRC) plus fresh chopped cilantro and some other stuff.
  10. @Smithy, thanks found that recipe online. It has apples, cranberries, and pecans, which will be a nice counterpoint to the bread dressing if I do need to make both.
  11. I may have a guest for Thanksgiving dinner who must eat gluten free (sorry, no gravy for her, not making two batches) does anyone have a favorite recipe for rice dressing in case I need it? I don't mind making a small batch in addition to the bread variety since I will eat the leftovers. My bread stuffing/dressing has mushrooms and onions, so an alternate flavor profile would be nice (maybe dried fruit?).
  12. Roasted delicata squash seeds. They are pretty small so you avoid the “woodiness” that larger seeds (like pumpkin) can have. Got a little darker than I intended, I was preparing dinner and heard popping sound in the oven...

    Dinner 2018

I am on a mission to clear out the freezer in advance of Thanksgiving, so I have been pulling leftovers out and also using all of the odds&ends I had saved (for future lunches) to supplement. Friday was chicken chili with rice/beans. Saturday was riced cauliflower “fried rice” with some leftover quinoa mixed in, leftover grilled chicken diced up, the remnants of a bag of frozen edamame, and a few fresh carrots sliced into the mix for some color. Served with a couple squirts of sriracha.

    Thanksgiving 2018

First thing I would check if the turkey needs to be Halal. If they are very observant, they may not eat it otherwise. I would try to integrate some more savory flavors rather than everything being sweet, so for example roasted or mashed potatoes. And maybe a fresh cranberry relish with orange and ginger, which would be leaning towards chutney and more familiar. Sounds like you will have a very nice time regardless of the food!
  15. Chicken cutlet with roasted eggplant and ricotta on Italian bread/roll from DiPascale's at Meadowbrook deli. Sorry, hungry and took a bite before I remembered the photo!
  16. Tribbles!
  17. Georg Jensen...I like Scandinavian design for tableware. Simple, sculptural, functional.

    Well, it was a steal...😜
  19. I go to Whole Foods in Cherry Hill on weekdays as it is close to my office. Rt. 1 location is close to home. It is disappointing to order online with no way of knowing an item is out of stock, they obv don’t have a robust POS software since most online retailers for clothing, for example, will know as soon as you select your size whether the item is available. I have wondered if the convenience of online grocery shopping offsets the drawbacks. Since you would be otherwise unable to shop at WF, certainly it provides a great service. Whether they do a better job with your intended purchases in the future is the question.
  20. @JoNorvelleWalker, is there an option to select “no substitutions if item is out of stock” or something like that? And I would definitely complain to customer service about the incorrect weight charge on those figs. Strangely enough, one time when I stopped in WF near my office around 8:30 am, there was something from the produce dept that they hadn’t gotten coded in yet so the cashier gave it to me at no charge.

    Breakfast! 2018

I skipped the bread and put a blob of peanut butter directly on a banana this morning. It’s a classic.
  22. I tried some Cholula Chipotle hot sauce at a local Mexican place and it was a nice blend of sweet and not too much heat. I'm not into super hot sauce, it was just a nice little extra flavor on some chips/guac. Bought a bottle at the local supermarket.
  23. Coworker said he dehydrates chili peppers in an air fryer, 20 minutes does the trick.
  24. Apparently pawpaws grow somewhere in our area, a local ice cream shop that makes seasonal flavors from locally sourced ingredients had some pawpaw ice cream recently. I really would like to taste a pawpaw.
  25. Caramel apple rolled in chopped roasted peanuts. Is there a better snack to allow you to feel virtuous (look, I’m eating an apple) while getting a dose of candy. Plus it’s on a stick!
