  1. Apropos this topic, has anyone read of the scientific studies being undertaken for a few years now on the consumption of milk containing beta casein A1 vs beta casein A2. Worth googling to see what the story is, but basically it is being proposed by some scientists that A2 milk (mainly from Guernsey herds) is far more beneficial to health than A1 milk, which may contribute to artheriosclerosis, diabetes and schizophrenia??....studies ongoing.....
  2. You are SO lucky Doddie to have that sort of supermarket to go to.....looks very like the one near my daughter's apartment in Beijing ( except for the Korean script)....you should see what is available near us here in rural England......I am really jealous..... p.s. not food but what sort of discipline does your son's school use?? My son's closest friend in HK is Korean and he did get a fair bit of 'disciplining' when he was growing up. Just wonder if it's common?
  3. I was thinking the same thing and was going to suggest a birds and bees theme, poultry and honey, like a honey-glazed chicken. ← me too but I felt to silly to tell hehehehe
  4. the beginnings of a really interesting blog Doddie....looking forward to lots of new info....BTW do you ever cook kilauwin (esp. with pork innards??) my total favourite. Is that your hubbie on the computer in the background of the kiddie fort photo...it's just a bit hard to see
  5. hehehe the dreaded flash strikes again
  6. It's 0650 am where I am but I would sit down NOW and eat the lot.....cheers Gabriel oh, interesting to see the ground dry cooked rice so pale on the yam nuea...mine is normally golden. How does it taste??
  7. hehehehehehehe Note to self: Marmite is NOT a sex aid
  8. Love it!!!! ← Our housekeeper in Hong Kong regularly brought food back with her from her country after her trips home. Once one of the dishes main ingredients was dogmeat. The kids weren't too happy at my barking every time they opened the fridge but I did explain that in some places people are so poor that this is one of the few cheap sources of protein they have access to, as indeed was the case with our housekeeper's family, and it is, after all, just meat. I tried it and it tasted like veal, quite nice actually. But a lot of people did go eeewwww when I told them.
  9. The problem inherent in communicating by posts on the internet is that often the posts can be mis-read. As you noted, about your original post. There's a lot of signals missing in this form of communication that are there in "real life" and also the communications are not clipped into a box that limits them in size due to time or form. In a mythical situation, it could be that someone who posted your original post could have been sitting down with, as I noted, "a royal contolling bitch". In that mythical situation, that person could have been the woman who made it very clear to you that your actions were, as you noted "unacceptable". In this mythical situation that would have been your MIL. You note that comments were made without people knowing the entire situation, but of course they could not know that unless you had provided that information . . .and of course nobody really knows what happened at any time between two people in any situation except those two people and even then sometimes the perception of what happened is different. Heh. I was one of the few actually defending you, Margy. ← Hey Margy, these threads sometimes morph into something different from what they started out as, like Chinese whispers. As Karen says, its so hard to communicate merely in writing as all the signals we read in the other's face are missing. I have been called a few things in threads which have made me pause in mid-stride, but they have generally been as the result of miscommunication. When you posted your last response facts became obvious to me that I hadn't picked up on in your original post......and some people on this forum do have very strong opinions, which is what makes it all the more interesting, if sometimes startling and, at times, even shocking
  10. I can't believe you're going Peter, get right back there this minute Can't thank you enough for recounting your fabulous journey....I guess I'll just have to enjoy Laos vicariously for now...also delighted that you like Haruki Murakami, crickets and calvados oh, the planes LOOK much better than before (I did hear that Thai Airways was training Lao pilots, however I can still hear the chief pilot of Thai Airways a few years ago remarking to me that flying as a profession with people from Thailand/Laos did not in general mix. I'm sure you'll know what he meant)
  11. Is it Grave of the Fireflies?...probably not......... this is a Japanese anime movie about 2 children in WW2 Japan and in one scene they eat fruit drops then fill the can with water and drink it...I do recommend the movie, for what it's worth....
  12. Now what are you doing watching a movie like Heatbeat Doddie?? hehehe correct and 82 is the Silent Movie, more suitable family viewing!!
  13. Time for some clues? - It's a 1980's Movie - It was already suggested before as an (incorrect) guess above - There are numerous references to Mickey Mouse throughout the film ← ahaa is it Full Metal Jacket, HB??
  14. you have been *assured* CORRECTLY wdogs...well done old chap...No. 83 is indeeed Enemy at the Gate
  15. Totally wrong as it was a social situation. I would have had the salad but not finished it. ← MargyB, As it was not only a social situation, but also a family one, I would have ordered something....a sandwich, a salad....especially in the context of where you were dining. Do your in-laws live in the senior community? Perhaps it was the only place they could take you? It was a small thing for you but maybe a bigger one for the in-laws. People matter more than food. Not worth upsetting family over it.
  16. is No. 67 Body Heat or should I throw my Sherlock Holmes hat out the window?? Great ending (for a woman hehe) and i think the monkey brains lines are spoken by Tim Curry's butler in Clue

  19. is no. 88 'The Goonies' when Chunk throws the Baby Ruth to Sloth and it hits him on his head?? and is No. 77 O-oooklahoma cos that's the only movie I can think of with a picnic basket auction (Curly is the highest bidder)...........where the wind comes sweeping down the plain etc etc
  20. well, PCL, you know HK...what's consumerism for if it isn't for being conspicuous?
  21. Gagnaire. For what it's worth, found l'Arpege (only twice mind you) not up to the former's standard on the day.... and Arpege was the more expensive option. i.e €750 to Gagnaire's €500ish ps. we did push the boat out with the wine
