  2. You guys are making me fall off my chair! I actually tried to 'lose' the kettle during our move from Florida last summer, it didn't get lost, though, as she astutely pointed it out to me and said "Mommy! Your special kettle from me!" The kettle is the first thing she ever bought me all by herself. I wish that I could use the kettle for a planter or something, but it is just horrid. Well, soon enough, she'll be off to her own place, and I'll bequeath the kettle to her, for the memories. Let her figure out that you burn yourself on the handle and it doesn't whistle.
  3. Geez, you're all so fancy, I feel silly with my little list this year. I want a really great apple slicer. I secretly want a new teapot but the current one(stupid Crate & Barrel Copco!) is a gift from kiddle a few years ago, and I can't ask for a replacement, it would break her heart! I want a really big pan, too. For frittatas and quick sauces. But, I'm too cheap for those big ticket ones, my instructions to kiddle are "spend less than $50 at TJMaxx!".
  4. Uni, sushi with a quail egg atop and a spritz of lemon. My favorite boyfriend knows my predeliction and supplies (or is that plies?) me with immense orders of this whenever we go to a sushi bar. I would thrill to try uni with pasta, I have only eaten it in sushi.
  5. Last summer, when I first moved here to the Freehold NJ area, I was happy to find the 'Kosher Experience' aisles of the local Shop Rite. They carry kosher Haribo gummies! The local kosher market that I found a few towns South of me doesn't, and the local candy man said that he can't get them for some reason. They always have decent cookies, too. Foodtown has a kosher aisle, too. So does Pathmark, it's nice to have that choice! In Florida the large markets had smaller areas of kosher specific items, and they usually were simply soups and the obligatory Manischewitz/Rokeach stuff. These places have the Israeli stuff I would need to go to a kosher market for in South Beach.

  7. Hey, I haven't worked since February and there is a 16 year old girl in the house, THAT'S expensive without groceries! Meat happens about once a week, and we then stretch it into lots of extra meals. We're big on brown rice, steel cut oats and bulghur. Steel cut oats cooked then added to salads or soups, yum! Whenever the butcher has any meats on sale, I stock up and cut small one pound portions myself. A one pound mini roast is 4 meals for the two of us, one big early supper, one soup, one salad lunch topper and one breakfast filler(egg whites and...) And, no, I haven't lost any weight eating less meat, au contraire, I've gained over 30 pounds! ULP. Got to cut out the olive oil and the cheese.
  8. Hi, thanks for blogging for us! Those arancini look pretty delicious, and that cat looks pretty adorable as well. While I can tell that you will be mixing it up(yay!), I have to say that I ADORE Polish soups, pierogies, breads, noodles AND those Polish chocolates with the plums inside..... oh, dear, I'm on a strict regimen right now, can't think of potatoes, pierogies, chocolate..... ergh... I'll just watch from over here, thanks!
  9. Whew. Now I know why I've gained so much weight since becoming ill in February, your blogs didn't look like all that much food to me. I completely fell in love with that lemon condimant you made, I'm going to try to get those ingredients and make some of that spicy lemony yum myself. BTW, do you like the green hot sauces? I love those lately. Thanks for letting us in on your week, I really enjoyed the visit! You look great, keep up the good work and stay well!

Many a celebrated personage has been broken in and down by a stay at our humble and eclectic abode... there was the hit maker who it seems still tells of how I supplied him with a local map and instructions to "get out of the house, Dear, and have a good time" ... heck, South Beach is a WALKING town ... and of course our fantastic late afternoon cocktail hours ... all guests are expected to come home by this time AND to supply the crusty loaf from the local bakery(it WAS right on the corner!) ... it may be that I should write a guide for other hosts ... (still thinking of the lovely Swedish vegan who thought that eggs were OK )

    Challah

    I couldn't figure out what to do with all of the dough either. Shabbat is just kiddle and me, and we both try not to eat too much challah.... My solution has been to send one to my sis and the rest of the loaves to neighbors because, hey, who doesn't like a stray loaf of challah?
  12. In Miami there are some great 'regional' chains. There's La Carreta and David's. Both are open 24/7 and both serve amazing home style Cuban food. It's great to have La Carreta to go to for some cafe con leche and pan tostado, after going happening hopping in downtown Miami. And, there's nothing like hitting all the clubs in South Beach and then walking to David's at 4:00 AM for pastelitos, fresh squeezed orange juice and 'un cafecito' to energize you for the rest of your date. I'm in New Jersey right now, and I even miss Denny's! I'm all for small, focused chains for good food. I'm also all for Denny's style places, if the local diners are few and far between or you're in a town that thinks only doughnuts should be available 24 hours a day. I like my coffee and french fries later, or earlier. Personally, I think La Carreta could successfully sweep the nation, although their salad offerings could use a lift.

  15. We had roasted nuts in salads AND Mom made killer yogurt, lemon and garlic dressing a few times, in our very cool early 60's ranch house during the mid 60's. Mom was American, 2nd generation, Italian 'n' European Jewish. The leather bustier, now I couldn't say, but we DO know there was use of funny masks and wigs occasionally! Hey, my parents were typical 60's suburbanites.

  17. Wow, this has been a great fun friendly thread! you're all wonderful posters! I feel better now. Friday I'm buying some kosher blue cheese ( allergic to 'real' blue cheese, penicillins blah blah blah, 'ya know) and anchovies and making an updated version of Dad's salad... don't think I could stomach the Good Season's though. Kiddle will gag, I'm sure, she eats neither blue cheese nor anchovies....mwahahahaha! Evil Mommy? But no, I'll make her a nice albeit tamer version.....

  20. Other than my sister and cousin's wonderful chicken soup with matzoh balls, my favorite soups are pureed vegetable soups. I've loved them in vegan (Sally's), vegetarian(Here Comes The Sun) and nonvegetarian(Da Leo) restaurants. However, since leaving Miami and moving to NJ I have only had them at home, I wonder where we can go for those around here?
  21. Regarding Emes products (which I have never used myself) I've read the ingredient labels and they contain carageenan. Doesn't carageenan have some protein in it? I'm confused.
  22. We're going to my sister's (snow and Allison are the reasons we've moved to, ugh, NJ) this year. What does my sister serve? She tells me this "A bagel spread and take out Chinese food, deal with it!".... I love my sister, and she is a very good home cook, Rosh Hashanah was wonderful. I'm trying to watch it since gaining so much weight during my illness this year, I only ate her amazing chicken broth and wonderful composed salad. I'll eat my steamed veggies and some sable and bring a fruit or vegetable salad of some sort...... I wanted meatless stuffed grape leaves, maybe I'll bring those, too. If I lemon them up, she'll probably let ME finish the wine.
